Hi Tom, A great photo of Donny’s Leyland Comet with a load of Concast Plant components destined for Hong Kong out of DEC in the days when they were very busy without the worries of closure unlike the present situation although I believe they have had a reprieve for the time being. I think Hughie Rickerby would be the driver at the time.
Cheers, Leyland 600

Hi Dennis, I can’t remember much about Hodgsons, I never came into contact with them at all, the only thing that sticks in my mind was when Norman D and myself were serving our apprenticeships at Cowans Sheldons on London Rd, Carlisle standing outside the works at dinnertimes circa 1959-62 we often observed a very tidy Albion Chieftain FT3 model painted in Shell BP colours and carrying cartons of their products plus it had an angle iron cage at the back for carrying larger drums of oil etc. It used to travel up and down Brook St to and from their depot at the far end on Greystone Rd which is the location of the preserved ERF shown above.
Cheers Leyland 600.

Thanks for that Gerald, as I said I only came into contact with Hodgsons down at London Colney,I think they must have worked closely with J & W W and obviously had a Shunter based there. It would be interesting to find out more about them( not been nosey like !) as they were probably over shadowed by both Watts and Robsons but looking at that shot of the KV artic they ran a tidy fleet. Cheers Dennis.

Looks like a fairly hard worked motor Gerald or a bit of age on it ! Donny was a big “hound dog” man I believe. Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dennis,I found this for you.
Is it a AEC Marshall
Looks like loaded with Reels
Norman croad,Torquay.

Hiya Norm, yes it was one of RO Hodgsons AEC Marshals loaded with reels from Henry Cookes shot when new judging by the ground surface next to it as this was when Nat West were building their new branch 65/66 next to the ROH garage and offices at No1 Haverflatts Lane. ROH vacated and sold their depot in 1970 when their parent Co Boddy Industries opened a site in Carnforth. They got kicked out of the Henry Cooke mill at the same time but when that shot was taken they would be regular contractors at the mill alongside the Henry Cooke own account fleet which would number about 8 or 9 ridgids but in 1968 Cookes cut their own fleet right back to 3 Seddon artics and 6 new trailers. I bought the old ROH premises in 1972 off the Cockney geezer that had bought them off Boddy Industries. They were cracking premises at the time but unfortunately they were in the middle of the village and access was terrible.Cheers Dennis.

A W Jenkinson Penrith.

what ever happened to SEYMOUR PLANT ,iirc they had a depot in Dumfries as well and I worked wae some o the machine men from armadale ,because we were north o Moffat on the beeftub widening in the early 80s just north o town we moved the hill opposite the graveyard and took it a couple o miles up the road and dumped it over the bridge (ruxtons dump where he dumped the dead body) 3 o us up and down all day long for months the men had to come from armadale. some 360 operators names I mind were ■■■■■■ and wug, packie broon.

seymour plant became part of hewden stewart, and eden construction and eden homes became part of the kier group, dont know what happened to the road surfacing part,

Is that Barghs the same firm that has got the green Scania’s now?
