Tom, The AEC Mercury pantechnicon looks as if it was a show model for Holmalloy of Preston, I have it listed as ORM 861. AEC Model GM4RH198 ULW 3t-19cwt, first registered 03-01-1955. This is the entry in ■■■■■■■■■■ County Council registration records.

Tom and Dennis, Yes it is the A595 at Mealsgate looking north towards Carlisle with the road to Fletchertown leading off to the left and the road to the right to Boltongate and Ireby. The large building on the right halfway up the hill is the Apple Tree pub (now demolished) where a good friend of my wife lived before she was married, she is now 88. As a teenager she along with other teenagers used to frequent the old signal box at the top of the hill when it was a shop indulging in buying sweets and drinking Arnisons lemonade. Her father was a joiner and worked in the joiners shop visible on the left at the bottom of the hill. The digger must have been there for the road improvements in the 1960s I guess.
