Hello ■■■■■■■■ Gill
Trotters don’t have a 143 there was a couple of 113s but they have gone now. They have a 124 and an R470 which sometimes pulls a tipper and is based at calthwaite.
Hello hesket born n bred,
Thankyou for correcting me, it is a Scania 124 tractor unit pulling the tipper trailer. What does Trotters use it for as I thought Trotters only do sewage & tank cleaning haulage?

Dennis once mentioned that he attended Road Haulage Association meetings in Newby Bridge with other hauliers, I have a couple of questions were the hauliers exclusively South ■■■■■■■■ or did the Lancaster based hauliers attend. What type of things did you talk about?
Hiya “george” the RHA meetings I mentioned were held at The Newby Bridge Hotel during the “turbulent” 70’s when inflation was running in the high teens. The RHA in S. ■■■■■■■ was made up of two areas,Barrow area ( Sec. Ken Surphlis) and Kendal area ( Sec John Brailsford) monthly meetings in both areas, prior to the three day week and the war in the mid east, were only sparsley attended but once pressure on costs not to mention the £1 an hour demanded by the unions, began to bite, all of a sudden attendances increased dramatically. As I was fairly close to Jack Brady and the two of us were the largest hauliers in our respective areas we thought that the two areas would benefit by joining together to at least try to formulate a common stratagey with regard to achieving sustainable rate increases which were badly needed by all the hauliers.Lancaster and district were never involved.Other hauliers who attended the meetings IIRC were W.H. Towers( Broughton in Furness) Roly Saunders,Billy Keith, Barkers ,from Kendal area were Tony Nelson (Barnes and Nelson) Gary Newby,John Brailsford,John Davy,Walt Allen (E. Nelson,Arnside), Les Wilson,Jim Nelson,Geoff Taylor.I also attended a few meetings that were just concerned with Bowater Scott hauliers which maybe Ashburners attended but I’m not sure,it was a long time ago. Those joint area meetings were quite lively from memory as costs were rocketing continuosly during that time and at times like that it sure scares the hell out of operators.Although I can say ,at least from my firsthand experience,I managed to negotiate more-or less the increases I needed at that time with all my main customers as I found that if I explained in detailed letter form the why’s and wherefores I always was met with a favourable response. Some of the annual increases I obtained were in the order of 12 to 20% as well as periodic fuel surcharges.Difficult times but fair, not like to-days dog eat dog industry !! Cheers Dennis.

Hello hesket born n bred,
Thankyou for that info on Kingstown Commercials. Do Trotters have any Foden’s in the fleet? I know they used to have a big Foden fleet at one time.

Hi CG
Only one Foden but 2 different use’s ( see photo’s).Never had any other Foden’s in the last 17 years i’ve been there and never heard any others mentioned. They used to have quite a few Leylands at one point.
Hiya “george” in answer to your question about any involvment with Lancaster hauliers, with the exception of my good pal Malc Woodhouse Snr.,I never had any dealings with either Geoff Thursby or Mick Gorry infact I’ve never ,ever, met either. On the other hand with regard to Kidds and Bargh’s I had ,reluctantly,to attend joint meetings with both of them as well as Nelson’s of Arnside at Nestles HO in Croydon. The MD’s/Managers of these three hauliers are no longer involved actively in the respective firms so I can only speak of the past.At the time Nestles split their tonnage between the four of us and Bewick/K.Fell probably had around 30% of the traffic but this only formed about 10% of Bewick T/O and we operated more motors than the other three added to-gether.As far as Nelson’s were concerned, from the mid 70’s onwards Libby/Nestles probably accounted for 90%+ of their outgoing traffic, and because of Bargh’s and Kidds involvment with MMB milk haulage they wern’t quite as dependant on Libby’s as Nelson’s but never the less it would have been a substantial part of their outward traffic. In later years Nestles “rationalised” the hauliers out of Milnthorpe and Nelson’s and Bargh’s (suprisingly) were dropped. The Nestle traffic was then shared between Bewick and Kidd ( 75%/25%). With regard to Scania Spares and Service,we always held a substantial inventory as we were running probably 60/70 Scanias at one time and we had a motor call into Grahams at Carlisle every day to pick up spares. We probably held as many spares as Bargh’s and no,over the years we never bought as much as a single “washer” from them and,of course, our workshop function was far superior to any Scania dealer’s which resulted in us returning our motors, if necessary, many miles for repair in our own facility. The least I had to do with either Kidds or Bargh’s suited me fine and thats all I would say on the matter !!! Cheers Dennis.

This Leyland Freighter 1718 , reg . no . F 747 HEO was the last wagon I bought , 2 years old , and had covered many
miles with its previous owner , carrying livestock throughout the north of England .
I called it " Country Lass " , as some of the others had country themed names.
I sold it 2 years later , in 1993 , when I ceased haulage .
The photograph was taken at Houghton`s Parkhouse , Milnthorpe , on collection from painting , signwriting ,
and a brand new platform body made and fitted. The cattle container was 20 years old , and had been transfered from my
old 1976 Leyland Chieftain , reg . no . PEC 123 P .
Cheers , cattle wagon man.
Bewick:
Looking through all these pics featuring Penrith hauliers and I have noticed a glaring omission-------what about D&M Cargill !!! Curly was a one off !!! some of you gadgys about Penrith must have some tales to tell surely! I believe old Curly met a sad lonely end in a log cabin or similar what crying shame . I was sorry to have missed his funeral !I hope he was buried with a set of tools & chain & dwang.!!!
I remember D&M Cargill about 10-15 red ERF’s.
I did hear a story about Curly going into ERF at Carlisle to pick up a starter motor… the partsman dumped it on the counter… Curly looked at it and said with a completely straight face " that’s no good, I wanted a red one "

Bit of a long shot here; has anybody got pics of an Atki-Borderer owned by Jock McCaulay (RDC 746M) painted green in Watts of Carlisle colours (pre 1982),
my first class one job was with J & W Watt in 1977. I vaguely remember Andy McCauley and definitely remember the Atki in the photobucket link. Nice bloke, proper trucker.
