its the green and yellow version I remember

Jock packed in in 82 due to illness, the Atki was for sale at DAF Carlisle where his son worked, I bought it for about £1200 I think it was, which wasn,t too bad it being around 7 years old, and being a ■■■■■■■ 220/fuller it still had a lot of life in it, the motor was originally ex ICI from the N. East and had been regularly well maintained all it,s life, the biggest problem I found was that it had no power steering, which came as a shock after being on an F10 Volvo, chalk and cheese but it got me a start as an owner driver doing traction for KTS.About a year later I traded it in for a 2800 DAF, after the diff went, it was a group back axle,( which wasn,t as good as a Rockwell ) I think it was broken for parts at KTS when they got it “thrown in” in a deal on another motor.

looking closer at the green pic i see that it is a J & w Watt drip sheet and presumably trailer… them drip sheets weighed a ton…

I don,t know about AD hauling for Rikki Donnan in the 50s but they certainly did in October1964 or 5 and just about anyone else that was available when the herring hit Whitehaven, I remember one of Fred Brown.s Reiver tippers loading bulk herring for the fish meal factory at Hull and the driver standing with one foot on the body offside toprail and the other on top of the tail board tipping boxes of fish when he slipped and fell inside. A few of us had a hell of a job to pull him out. Someone asked about loading fish onto flat platforms wagons , yes thats about all there was then, no fridges. I cannot remember if ice was put in the boxes or not but the load was measured in crans. This worked out a lot heavier than you thought, can,t remember how many boxes to the ton. Rikki would ring up early evening saying come in and load ASAP then kept you sitting on Whitehaven dock all night while many other wagons were being loaded then when you did eventually get loaded he would still expect you to deliver in Hull, Leith or Frazerburgh by 8-0am same morning. A bit like coals to Newcastle, fish to Mc Fisheries beside Kinnaird Head Lighthouse at The Broch. Right up there and back doon with empty boxes in a oner, good job there were no little round card things in those days. Our good friend the late Robbie was a bxxxxr for ringing me up and imitating Rikki demanding a wagon right away for some ridiculous destination. Both he and Alec were on the fish too with his Reiver 649 KRM and Alec,s Trader It was a stinking job with fish scales everywhere, I was in Cammell Lairds shipyard a week or more later with some steel and when they knocked off for dinner and there was nobody about all the cats in Birkenhead were round my wagon and up in the chassis licking it. Also you had to reverse down the Sugar Tongue to load.

Hi Leyland 600 ,

Welcome to TruckNet !
Cheers , cattle wagon man.

Hi CWM,

When I was a youngster growing up in Ireby I used to travel all over with Robbie and Alex in the first Traders they had,IIRC the first one Robbie drove at 17 was a 5 tonner then it was replaced with a 7 tonner for Alex.I vaguely recall that Willie Dockray wasn’t very popular with the other Cattle hauliers as IIRC he’d cut the rate at the auction marts, get his motors loaded and then leave the other hauliers like A.D. Boyes,J.J.Bateman,Harry Bragg,Stan Fell et al to try and “stand their ground” with the dealers.I was only 9/10/11/12 but I clearly recall the aggro he caused even if I didn’t really understand what was going on !! I was sad to hear Robbie had passed away recently, but my memories won’t fade as the Boyes family gave me my first taste of what I decided to do eventually!! Cheers Bewick.

Hi All

Have any of you Cambrian lads got any photos of vehicles from the old Hoover fleet. We had 4 drivers based in Penrith. It was our changover point for night trunk and overnight stop for daymen on the way to Airdrie depot and the Camberslang factory.

We used to bunker at Davidsons Garage. They also did repairs for us. (Which was quite often as the Mandators aged).

Best Regards

Alyn

Hello Bewick
When you lived in Ireby and where friendly with the late Robbie & Alex Boyes, did they run a Leyland 4 wheel cattle wagon? It’s just I’ve seen photos of a Leyland Cattle wagon run by Boyes at Newcastle Auction Mart in the 1950’s on Flicker.

Hiya CG,Happy New Year to you Marra ! When the late A.D. started he bought the two vehicle “A” licenced business of Jake Strong in around 1951/2 which consisted of a Vulcan and '48/'49 Leyland Beaver. The green colour of these two motors was not the same as the BRG colour scheme that became the eventual A.D.B. colour though.IIRC the Vulcan was replaced by a new Leyland Comet 90 that had a Homalloy coachbuilt cab and was driven by William Gate who drove for Boyes until his retirement.Between Robbie leaving school and being able to drive he rode “shotgun” with William and when young Alex left school he did the same with his dad,who drove the Beaver.I used to sit on the bonnet on both of these motors !!! The reg no. of the Beaver was KAO*** ( or reverse) and the Comet OAO***(or reverse),hope this helps you to I.D. the photo ! Cheers Bewick.

Hi woodpecker, Welcome to Trucknet mate, I didn,t know any of Watts drivers apart from Jock the owner driver, it,s sad to hear that he died, how long ago was it? The only Watts man I did know was Billy in the office, a nice bloke he was, I can,t remember his surname.

This looks very much like they’ve been “■■■■■■■ about” taking publicity shots and the dozy ■■■■■ have come unstuck, somewhere in Lakeland by the looks of it,but maybe I could be wrong and it’s in the Alps somewhere ( doubt it) but then again one of the dozy drivers could have set his sat nav in Barrow for the shortest route to Carlisle ( straight over a couple of mountain passes) and he’s come unstuck “big style”---- now that could be the explanation !!! Bewick.
