I remember that Don Bewick 6wheeler, his son used to drive a 111 artic I think they were subbies for Duncan Hill.

Don Bewick was based in Plumbland near Aspatria I believe that he was also into hound dogs. He replaced the 111 with a 112R, which he did not keep for long until he sold it to Lawsons (it was Lawsons third Scania and second 112R). He hauled out of Marchon I never realised that he was a sub contractor for Duncan Hill I thought that he had his own work from Marchon.

Duncan Hill had a brilliant business model he only owned about five lorries at that time (all Scania 81’s) but he appeared to have around 20 sub contractors!

There’s a hound on Trucknet called Bewick  .
Anon.

Well I did grow up living about 3 miles away from where Donny ( the name he was known by!) Bewick operated from at Plumland !!Cheers Dennis.

While I’m not conversant with later years IIRC Donny Bewick was one of a number of W. ■■■■■■■ hauliers, along with Harry Fearon,A.D.Boyes,J.W. Graham,Johnson Bros. and a number of others that were sub-contractors out of the BRS depot at Howgate,Whitehaven in the 50’s and early 60’s.Following nationalisation in 1948 BRS came to dominate long distance road haulage but after the Labour shower were kicked out in 1950 de-nationlisation quickly followed and the BRS licences started to be sold. However,BRS still remained as a major haulier and in the case of W.■■■■■■■ they had a strangle hold in Marchon(Albright & Wilson),DEC ( Distington Engineering) and Workington Iron & Steel ( United Steel) so as the BRS fleet was cut local hauliers started up but had no alternative ( at least for the outward loads) but to become sub-contractors of BRS.Eventually as the BRS depot closed in W. ■■■■■■■ J.W. Graham/H. &M.E. Fearon/Johnson Bros. took on Workington Steel and the likes of A.D. Boyes took over at DEC.Other Hauliers such as Harry Thompson (a good Marra of mine) were becoming major hauliers to the likes of Smith Bros. paper converters and packaging manufactures.IMO West ■■■■■■■ took a long time to shake off the “nationalised” mantle as National Carriers(Whitehaven) were kept going by Albright & Wilson into the 80’s long after they should have been blown out, but politically W. ■■■■■■■ has always been over dependant on government handouts so it is no surprise that the major manufactures stuck with the likes of BRS/National Carriers long after their “sell by date”.This is only my opinion and others may take a different view!! Cheers Bewick.

Hello
I’m saddly found out today that one of ■■■■■■■■■ best haulage businessmem, Robbie Boyes RIP (boss of A.D Boyes (Ireby), died on the 30th of November 2011 and his funeral was last Friday (9th of December) in Wigton.
May I say on behalf of Trucknet how sorry we are to hear the news and that our thoughts are with his family at this very upsetting time.
RIP Robbie Boyes

I believe that Bewick was involved with Milnthorpe Transport!

Yes I was and also in their trading subsiduary Lakeland Commercials Ltd.,I had a 65% shareholding which I eventually disposed of to both existing and new shareholders. The firm then relocated to Carnforth and later to Kendal. Cheers Bewick.

They had two MAN tankers hauling out of Marchon in the early 80’s.

Hello georgeking,
Thankyou for that info. Did they keep the lorries at Marchon or Workington?
