Hello Bewick,
I do know who Paul Hodgson Bulk Tippers are. They run 5 Tippers (all Scania, plus one 2011) based at Risehow (Thompsons Plant Hire Yard) & Thomas Armstrongs Yard at Flimby. I belive they ran more than 5 wagons (10 lorries I think), don’t know what happened to the rest thought.
So Bewick, I do know how they are!

Hiya “george” we had around 5 or 6 liveried tractors that delivered paper from Cookes but dependant on how busy they were we probably had a similar number of general fleet motors motors running from the mill as well, then we would have anywhere from5 to 10 motors a day bringing in raw materials, pulp, waste paper and various chemicals. However traffic from our varied customer base would fluctuate somewhat over the year so we were usually able to keep the dedicated motors running on their various contracts fairly consistantly with the general fleet motors taking up the slack around the operation.Although when our major customers all got busy at the same time, and they did on a regular basis,we would be stretced to the limits for a while, but we always managed to cope somehow! I don’t know a lot about Robsons but I believe they did have a fair number of motors spread about as well as operating a good number of trunks between Scotland/■■■■■■■ and the South. It used to be a standing joke that Robsons often ran trunks empty in both directions!!! I found it hard to believe but apparently it was supposed to happen on a regular basis! Cheers Dennis.

Bewick:
Bewick Transport,we probably never had more than 30 motors based at Milnthorpe, the rest were spread out around various customers and a couple of other depots in Lancs, Cheshire,Devon,West midlands,Daventry,Luton and in the earlier years Kent. The % of our traffic origionating from Milnthorpe dwindled to around 20% or so in later years. It would have been totally impossible to operate 100 motors from Milnthorpe,in 1970 when Henry Cooke booted out their largest contractor we were running 3 motors and I was encouraged to fill the gap and do as much extra work as we could, which we did.Over the following years we handled more and more of Cookes tonnage until by 74’ we were more-or-less doing all their tonnage other than what their own 3 artics were hauling. In Jan '77 we took over all the work and bought their motors and trailers off them,oh! and at this time we increased our rate schedules by IIRC 12:5%.During this time we were doing more and more traffic out of Bowater Scott in Barrow as well as Libby’s,where we’d bought K. Fells out,as well as running trunks for Storey Bros. of Lancaster not forgetting Walki Converters at Garstang.Because we wern’t and never were a “one customer” haulier(like a lot of hauliers were) Cookes were relaxed about giving us all their traffic as we wern’t 100% dependant on them, but they were our best customer by far ,all the same !! Cheers Dennis.Dennis how many of your vehicles would the Henry Cooke contract need?
You mention having vehicles based all over the country, did Robson have the bulk of theirs based at Carlisle or did they have other depots?
hiya,
Spot on there Dennis too many of the now deceased old hauliers worked on the principal of “all their eggs in one basket” and when the people they depended came unstuck so did the haulier, a bit sad but it did happen.

I remember that Don Bewick 6wheeler, his son used to drive a 111 artic I think they were subbies for Duncan Hill.Don Bewick was based in Plumbland near Aspatria I believe that he was also into hound dogs. He replaced the 111 with a 112R, which he did not keep for long until he sold it to Lawsons (it was Lawsons third Scania and second 112R). He hauled out of Marchon I never realised that he was a sub contractor for Duncan Hill I thought that he had his own work from Marchon.
Duncan Hill had a brilliant business model he only owned about five lorries at that time (all Scania 81’s) but he appeared to have around 20 sub contractors!
Hello
Heres some Don Bewick lorries.
