Heres a convoy crossing` the wilderness of Asby Fell, “Klunk/■■■■■■■■ .
No sand dunes ,… no camels, …just a few nomadic sheep and the trackside oasis to weave around !

I can remember helping to load gimmer lambs into that, on a dark morning , I think they stood as tall as me ,

---------and if CWM was the waggon driver they would’nt have been “gimmers” by the time they were unloaded at the “t’other end"in daylight,where’s me “wellies” 'oor Father? !!! and 'hod that dog back,or it might 'tek a hod 'o me bare arse eh” Ah’ll hev till have a word 'wid Atholl,he hes’nt trained it varra weel !! If my memory is correct , the gimmer lambs would have been en route to either Kendal or Hawes Auction .
“Strawgalore” would later be heading to Old Hutton Primary School, - following a clean-up after his runabout in the farmyard.

No , Dennis , it wasnt the stonyground that "Strawgalore" made contact with that morning,..............it was the opposite. :confused: He probably fell headlong into the softstercus tauri` .

Now if youd attended K.G.S. instead of L.S.f.B. , then youd have been taught Latin, and youd know what stercus tauri` means.

Do neither of you two Dales natives “ken” Atholl,you suprise me if you don’t Oh! and we were only taught two languages Longlands school,Anglo Saxon and Kendalian,they are very similar so were easy to learn eh! Cheers Dennis.

Do you know about the " Wanted,- good sheepdog" advertisement in the Westmorland Gazette many years ago ?
It was supposedly penned (no pun intended ) by Tommy . If youd like to know the story , Ill tell you.
Tommy used to own the Crooklands (Hotel) 60 years ago , back in the days when it was a farm.

Again ,as for Athol and his wife ,…no comment !

I was saddened to hear/read about of the sudden death of John Fell Stamper of R I Stamper (Kirkbride)

He passed away on the 5th of January at the ■■■■■■■■■■ Infirmary at the age of 56

I’m sure I can say on behalf of Trucknet UK that our thoughts are with is family at this sad time

Very sad news to learn of the loss of John Stamper. It was a privilege to have known such a popular businessman.

My sincere condolences to his family.

CWM, It was a shock when I received a phone call informing me of John’s death, we had a good crack at a rally one day last summer. I knew his father ■■■■ very well too and did occasional jobs for him with his LAD cabbed Leyland Comet back about 1964.

Taking a step back to January 1959 . One of my father`s favourite wagons during his 43 years of being a haulier.

This Ford 4D was photographed on its last day at work before being sold to W. Macfarlane , Kirkby Lonsdale .
The Ford was to be replaced by a new Austin FE 5 tonner , complete with a brand new livestock body , built by J. & J. Smith of Kendal.
