Crossing the Alps - your advice please

How is this for a thread revival? It is 8 years old and we finally have a photograph :stuck_out_tongue:

EuroJohny and Mick Franks stopped for a coffee at Montgenevre

the only route i can say that won’t cause you any problems, means you’ll have to go on a bit of a detour.
head down towards marseille, then along the coast towards genoa.
one hell of a detour, but it’s the only one i can think of. very scenic though.

I think they sorted a route, seeing as the original post was nearly 8 years ago. :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

oh
did he make it?

Yeah we made it, might dig out a pic later. The only truck which suffered was Payne’s F88, boiled up on the Route Napoleon.

Ahh the memories . . . :sunglasses:

more than a pic please, if that’s at all possible

I’d be glad to Simon, the only prob is that it was in the days when we still used slide film on the magazines and I don’t think I ever had more than one or two or those pics digitised afterwards . . . perhaps someone might scan the article into PDF format?

Holy thread reserection :exclamation: :open_mouth:

I bought a slide/negative scanner Craig for around 50 euros and transferred all my pics.

would that be on the D1090?

Good day all,

Here’s something different for you experienced continental guys to help with. At the start of May I’m going to be in a convoy of British trucks heading for Carisio. Doesn’t sound too big a deal, but the thing that makes this convoy special is that it’s made up of four F88s, four 111/141s, a couple of Transcontis, a Daf 3300 and a flat-top F12, all pulling era-correct 1970s trailers. A nice little group of classics on a run for one of the cancer charities.

What we had planned was a first night stop at Habay, then on to BP Macon next day, and then through the Alps via Montcenisio to Susa. Now we discover that our route across the Alps is a no go thanks to a weight limit. The other options from Macon are limited too: both the Blanc and the Frejus are out as these trucks don’t meet any Euro limits. Brian (Rslicker) suggested Montgenevre but apparently there’s now a weight limit up there?

So here’s where I need your advice and experience, please. Has anyone been across Montgenevre recently or know for a fact that it’s restricted?

If we have to go down to Ventimiglia (as a last resort) has anyone been over the Route Napoléon (N85) in the last couple of years. We’d rather take that route than the autoroutes as they’re so boring and you miss all the best scenery.

Any other route suggestions taking into account that we start off from Macon?

I don’t know very much about going to Italy as I’ve only taken the Fréjus, and never been to Italy more than a couple of times in total so all advice is gratefully received.

Cheers,

Craig
