Crap food at truck stops/transport cafes

Obviously there must be exceptions to the rule, but I’ve so far struggled to find anything above the barely acceptable.

A lot of the places aren’t cheap either and still serve up the same cheap sausages (which is imho a good gauge for the quality of a full English).

Can any of you seasoned campaigners give us a top 3 places for some decent food.

Place 1) your cab
Place 2) your cab
Place 3) your cab

Stop being so lazy and cook your own food! It’s healthier, you know where your fingers have been, you know whether you spat in it or not, you know whether you washed your hands after taking a dump, you know the quality of the ingredients used, and so on and so on.

Cab cooking really isn’t that hard, take a look at some of Luke Vernons Vlogs on Youtube and you’ll see you can cook up some tasty nosh in a shortish amount of time, (often quicker than walking over to, then queuing, and then waiting for your order to arrive in the cafe)

I’ve got a camping cooker and gas from when we went camping in Cornwall last year, but tbh am a bit wary of having a cylinder in the cab for safety and space reasons. I drive a Scania and there’s hardly any cupboard space. The only spare space I have is the top bunk or the passenger footwell. Could feasibly store the cooker & cylinder in the passenger footwell but I’m borderline OCD when it comes to clutter and things not having a nice tidy space. Then there’s the pots and pans, plates and cutlery, washing up equipment and so on.

When you are tramping and away for weeks a cooker and gas are essential, put the gas bottle under the passenger seat if it isnt too big

Your post is pointless unless you give us an idea of what you want, when you want it, ie all day breakfast and price you expect to pay. Maybe it’s all subjective points  . What “fo you” call acceptable?

I’e Spag bog £5
Steak & chips £10
Chinese £6,
Are all of the above with a brew or soft drink or beer, should it be a meal deal or all priced separately, should it be fast food or cooked to order.
What hours should it be available.

There you go fill in the blanks

Agree with Reef especially if tramping. For day trunkers etc then take your home made food or as I sometimes do if on the motorway, stop at a services with a Waitrose or M&S, not cheap but plenty of choice, decent, reliable and healthy options unlike the fast food outlets. Gloucester services between J12 & 11A is superb btw. You are what you eat and McDonalds, KFC, Greggs and the like aren’t to my taste.

Sorting it now, also washing up bowl, tea towels, saucepan, frying pan, a few utensils, olive oil, salt, pepper, tin opener, 2 plates, 1 bowl. Any thing else?

Will get some rice, pasta, dolmio, curry sauce, beans. Any other suggestions of things that will keep in the cupboard?

Chippenham truckstop has good food.

Do you have a fridge? My girlfriend cooks meals and freezes. I take bolognese, shepperds pie, beef casserole, lasagne etc with me on a monday. Heat up in microwave or saucepan. Also carry micro wave rice, tins of curry and stewed beef, microwave pasta and sauce (dolmio) and various soups. Take Riveta instead of bread, as they last longer, and cheeze and ham etc for breakfast/lunch.

Be careful when using gas. Open at least a window. And remember, gas is heavier than air. If you would have a spill, open the doors, not just windows.

Had some good food at Ashford International Truckstop

I’ve got a fridge, it’s my pride and joy, but alas no microwave. Good advice with the gas. I will just use the rings anyway, grilling makes too much washing up unless it’s toast.

A jetboil and some boil in the bag curry… Job done.

Just make sure you have plenty of bog roll.

Gloucster has some great food. I spent the night at one tiny place in Swaffem near Norwich, £20 does your parking, a massive plate of whatever is on the menu, I had gammon and it was wonderful plus you get 24 hour access to a shower that is lovely to use.

I’ll have to get some Vesta Currys, I like them, or I did the last time I had one circa 1985.

yeah that all important tea spoon, lol plate ,cereal bowl cereal , bacon, sausage ect from butchers eggs, bread minced beef, med sized 1 onion, one red/green chilli pepper 1 jar uncle bens chilli con carne (hot) small tin of kidney beans and some boil in the bag long grain rice , if you have a fridge fresh minced beef is very versatile and you have a source of chilling the beers to go with a spag bol or chilli, curry ect add some in in cab entertainment like tv or dvd /laptop , sorted, but in reality it’s often cut down to eating out of a tin when you park up quick & easy a few cold ones and sparko ,

I bought a tuna cucumber sandwich for £3.30 in a lay-by eatery the other week, bit steep I thought as I could have got 1 from the supermarket a few miles down the road for less than £2…[emoji33]

Vesta currys, although nice, need simmering for 20 mins at least…time consuming and use a LOT of gas.
Try Asda’s own brand tinned curry (£1.50),a pack of microwave rice (can be pan heated),and a pack of Pitta breads or Naans, which have a mega shelf life, and provide a long life emergency “gut filler”

There a blast from the past,do they still make um

Place 1) The Stock Yard
Place 2) Red Lion
Place 3) Exelby Services

Apart from that there rely is not much ells in the way of good truck stops with good food. OK the people who run these places listed above are all my friends. But I don’t bother with truck stops or fast food as I am self suffisent, and will buy cooked food whilst I’m on the road between 1-2 weeks. That is if I’m passing the above or wish to try a spot out.

I carry a 4KG gas bottle and a cooker. Anything bigger and the boss will whine health and safety and the usual crap bull story of if VOSA see it they will send you to prison.
Anything smaller like the little aerosol cans you see for sale at the truck stops with the cookers that only work on the aerosol cans then you are going to have a very expensive trip on cans of gas. I buy tinned and dry packaged food only as I don’t bother with a fridge or microwave; so no ready meals or refrigerated food.

Self suffisent is the only way IMHO. Don’t give these places you’r hard earned money as they have not earned it.
I would rater see them go out of business then you buy a meal in there.
Just think for every meal you buy with them you could save the money and buy a decent meal in your local pub over the weekend.

I even went to the trouble of making a hot water heat exchange unit that runs off of the air from the heater matrix for a shower.
Got hot water in a bottle alright but never got the thing to work as a gravity feed shower unit that runs a shower try on the cat walk all feed off of a cold feed tank. Dam tank kept leaking all the time when under pressure
