I heard mention a couple of times on 5 live news a possible relaxation in drivers hours in response to Corona virus impact on supermarket supplies. I thought then it would be in regard to eu hours but google found scant detail. This makes it sound more like work those delivery vans longer boys.
“The teleconference also discussed ways in which infected shoppers could pick up goods ordered online from stores without interacting with staff and the possible relaxation of other regulations, such as limits on drivers’ working time, in order to help those in self-isolation”
Overall we won’t consume more will we? This should be just a blip in demand? If the shelves are redtsckef quickly then further lack of confidence can be stopped.
.
Seems like a good use of agency drivers to fill shifts. And with those unfortunate box jockeys twiddling their thumbs st the moment, they are available.
.
Don’t panic.
I posted the following response to this relaxation of hours yesterday on a Facebook HGV driver group. Obviously the autocensor doesn’t work on FB but you get the drift;
“You can ■■■■ right off! If me going a few minutes over because it’s deemed to be dangerous and life threatening can cost me hundreds of pounds right now, then I’m ■■■■ ed if all of a sudden it can be deemed safe because Tarquin and Gemima may not get their Lentil soup!”

I posted a similar response too yesterday, on a BBC web page about Tosco crying that it needed drivers to work longer.
Maybe we can use this situation to drive home exactly how dependent people are on us?
I heard it was more allowing stores to have late night deliveries.
Although I don’t do supermarket work.
Not sure if there is a law on delivery times?and if so why?
Yes I get it if it’s in a residential area.
But most supermarkets are on retail parks. So if there open 24hrs and want a delivery at 1am.then why not?what’s the govenment got to.do with anything

A lot of supermarkets are not on retail parks plenty have houses right next to them and so have night time curfews in place from local council, it’s these rules that will be relaxed I believe.
If it will make any difference to shelves being stocked I’m not convinced as most of those stores have limited capacity and staff nowadays…

And some you have to go down back streets to get to the back of them.
If panic buying is anything to go by the driver will need protection as some morons could hijack his load.
Especially if he’s delivering bog roll

I agree absolutely with maoster’s comments above.
I recall many years ago the driving hours rules being ignored during the clean up after the "Torrey Canyon?"disaster. The lunatic element among us worked almost non stop with impunity leading tankers of detergent. As maoster says, one day you’re a menace to society if you drive 5 mins.over your limit, next day just keep on going with impunity.

That’s the thing - most of the problems are caused by the supermarkets going to “just in time” instead of having stuff stored locally. It works until there’s a rush or a problem with deliveries.
I have seen no store that has been completely out of bog roll or anything else. Stock is slighty reduced in stores but the warehouse seems to have plenty.
Yea, I have been delivering more bog roll than usual but it works great for me. I’d rather have pallets of that instead of heavy drink cages.
Very similar thing happens every winter in my 4x4 rescue group.
50 weeks of the year, we are evil, climate destroying, kitten murdering, arses…
Until it snows… then the local council are falling over themselves to get our help, all the local care homes want us to ferry people about, nurses, doctors, shops, community care groups, even the police are vying for our service.
