There’s the obvious costs ,checking and then rectifying if any damage too bridge ,but what would the cost be for a train stood for 2 hrs because of hit bridge ,ta
For the train to stand and cmpensate passengers could top £20000 .
1 haulier hit the railway bridge at huntly at few years ago and moved it 1.2 mm out of line, the total cost to his insurance was just short of 1.2 milion quid.

Thanks,no idea of whether there was/ wasn’t damage too bridge ,I guess the 2 hrs I was told the train stood for was inspecting the bridge too see if there was any damage ,20,000, that’s a fair old figure too be honest ,I guess if you have a few of them + other accidents it may well justify saying due too these incidents there’s no money in the pot left over for a pay rise ,thanks again .

Ohhhhhh dozy! you haven’t
Remember speaking with an RIO from network rail when theres a bridge strike, its about 1k per minute the line is closed plus cost of the damage to the bridge…so if it takes an hour to remove a stuck trailer, then theres the structural assessment , you can see why is an expensive mistake to make
Remember the train crash at Selby a few years back? That wasn’t far from me and there was talk in the local paper about £40k per week just to have the track closed.
We’re told that engineering work over runs is £3000/minute/train delayed.
Now I’m not a railway expert but how do they work out the cost after all said and done. Obviously there is the cost of a structural engineer and the cost of repairs to said bridge and fuel cost for trains waiting on the tracks and what not but how do they get 1 to 3 grand per minute out of it, the only setbacks would be a road closure and a load of late trains and angry Office commuters but to be fair, when are trains ever on time anyway and when are office commuters ever happy in the morning?
Also, I would have thought it would have all gone through insurance or something because that’s what insurance is there for.
£46.13 per minute, per train delayed, including all reactionary delays
I cant see how contacting a bridge with the top of an aluminium and GRP trailer is going to do much damage to a bridge made of steel and stone.I sometimes do rail replacement work with the bus when the railway is closed or there is a broken down train to be dealt with. This work used to be considered very lucrative ,but now there are too many Poles and agency ,you guys know the rest of the script. No Stobarts though, not yet.

I think its because the operators get fined by whoever their region franchise owner is for delays on the network.

ex signalman can shed some light on this cause ANY delay to a train on our section of line and you would have the delay clerks strait on the phone to find whos fault it was who to blame etc now dependent on the line and time of day delay can cost the company anything between £33 and £150 per minute . now each company has there own clerks who will all try to deflect blame off themselves so it goes around in a circle until they all agree . the other way cost is bumped up is if a train is delayed beyond a certain amount of time it loses its path at junctions further down the line ( like turning up at an RDC late ) this means it will cause further delay to other trains as it runs along its route all of this delay will be passed back onto the original cause of the delay increasing the cost . as an example Georges road bridge at Stockpot which gets hit alot typical takes an hour to get back to normal running at the hight of the rushour that hour can see anything upto 12 trains delayed some of which will be long distance express trains incuring more delay all the way to there destinations .lastly was able to get onto the delay sceen for the above mentioned Selby crash after it was finnaly closed out and it stood at 11 million minutes delay at £100 per minute all this cost would of been past on to the unfortunate car drivers insurance company as well as the cost of the clear up and replacement and restoration at the scene and the cost to replace the destroyed rolling stock .before any compensation claims came in from those injured or bereaved are calculated all together a fair old sum to pay out for a moments loss of concentration

I appreciate that there are many separate costs bundled together here, but just crunching numbers for fun, £100,000 for every tenth of a millimetre.
Somebody taking the poor sods to the cleaners methinks - I know nothing about rail engineering, but have doubts that such a small displacement would have any significant detrimental effect on the track?
i go under the 15’arch one in Grantham that keeps getting whacked.there’s often a van with a bod in there watching and waiting…the Rail chiefs would no doubt add his costs on to the next bridge strike bill

No I don’t use the things, - I followed the official diversion off the M25 (closed at 16) took us down the M40, A40, up the A412 under the Denham Bridge (16’3") but only in the middle (arched bridge).
Kind Truck flashed me through, got into middle of road - was half way through with a Decker (one of the new ones with a raised bar at the back above the doors) and a car came at me (overtook the waiting queue) at speed, - I did a little swerve to miss him & my trailer caught the under the arch - so p1ssed off with myself - I should have let him hit me

Feel for you Toddy. Inconsiderate prick!! Does your head in mate!!!
Much damage ? i.e to the trailer and of course to the bridge…did you manage to get out from underneath the bridge or did you get stuck…
You live and learn and these a time to swerve and a time not to …Unfortunately this was a time not to…pitty you didnt have a dash cam recording, one of them moments when you need it the most
Just caught the rear corner, but enough to pull the corner off - the bridge was fine - not even marked.
the trouble with these new Cartwright deckers (and I usually get the old ■■■■■■■■■ is they have a ridge at the back, stands about inch & a half taller than the old Don Burs,
Plus, now they have swapped the Scania’s for FM’s, they ride lower on the pin, so the back sticks up a bit further,
Got out of it ok, but the result can be seen
He was going so fast, I couldn’t tell you what it was - Audi I think,
I just did a quick left & right to save the Unit, more of a reflex action,
In Hindsight (always wiser after the event) - should have held on & let him hit me, After all , the unit is worth far less than those trailers.
