Cost of hiring a Tractor Unit

I’ve been asked how much a trip to a race in the South of France would cost by a race team, they normaly only does UK stuff, I can work out the toll cost and ferry cost, etc, but they think it would be better if they hired a tractor unit as their’s is old and they don’t want the risk of it breaking down and then having to get it back to the UK and miss the race.

I reckon they’ll need a unit for about 8 days.

I know I could phone up a few places, but I thought I’d ask first and anyway it’s late and hire places are closed.

Hi, When are you looking at going as I have a tractor unit (Daf XF105 4x2) that has some down time, I would have to drive though, let me know if any good, would be looking at £200 a day plus fuel.

It costs £500 per week over here for a 4x2 big cab, plus whatever your insurance co. charges to add to the policy.

I’m not sure when they are planning to go or what series they are racing in, they do a lot of different stuff, mostly club series for Gentlemen drivers, mixture of GT’s and Historic stuff. I think they need an idea of the cost so they can tell the drivers, then if they are willing to pay they’ll organise it.

if you take into account that it includes the driver and his wages, it is not that bad a price actually

I bet I could find somebody who would do it cheaper, recession and all that.

i didn’t say it was a good price, i just said it wasn’t a bad price

My last Boss packed it in because he couldn’t earn £300 a day plus fuel, so £200 a day plus fuel doesn’t sound very promising.

How can you make a unit pay offering it out at those rates    or am I missing something here

No, you can’t. He’s doing it for the crack I would say, i’d take him up on it in a shot if I was looking for a unit for a week. A hire unit from Hill Hire would be about £400 per week and you’d have to have an account set up with them. The insurance is roughly about a hundred quid a week in the UK so would be more for Europe. Hill hire and many other rental companies might not even let you take it abroad anyway. The only problem with hiring a haulier to do it is how reliable are they and are they going to turn up on time and not throw a tantum during the week? I’m sure your man with the XF is a good egg but you never know.

Its not a rate I would say was brilliant, but I thinking further down the line its for 8 days to the south of france, so 3 days down, 2 days parked, 3 days back. so for £1600 excluding fuel, ferries and tolls its better than nothing if its going to be parked up otherwise. and a nice little jaunt for pepperpot if he’s petrol head.

I was asked to do something similar some years back as the boys concerened taxed their Renault Premium unit for private use, and were ■■■■ scared of getting pulled and ripped apart by the Genedarmes, so I went for a discussion and to cast my eyes over the trailer they had spent big bucks converting. A very nice double decker with accomodation and full workshop facilities… apart from the little problem of it being 4.6m high… doh!!! :grimacing:

Not running a truck I wouldn’t actually know if it’s a commercial rate or not, but if Pepperpot is looking to do it for a bit of a jolly because he’s a petrol head then I’m sure he’ll have a good time and be well looked after by the team. Although he might not be the only person on this thread hoping for a Jolly to the South of France
I’m not sure when they are planning to go, I think it would be early next year now and they are just looking at the feasibility of doing the trip. Basically they come up with a price and if the drivers are willing to pay it then they’ll do it.

I phoned up Roy Humpreys, yesterday, Hire of a unit £110 + VAT per day for up to 500km per day (although over 8 days I don’t think they’d go over that) and taking it on the continent was no problem.
as for insurance, most teams I’ve work for get a specialist motorsport cover that cover all vehicles the either own or hire and all drivers employed by the company regardless of age provided they have the correct licence.

But if a haulier pulled the trailer I suppose it might come under thier insurance, would standard GIT cover the value of the trailer and load probably about £300,000?

P.S. the Trailer is 4.2m.

muckles:

I’m not an expert on Euro work but doesn’t that mean you’re knackered before you even start?

Paul

Ok for France, not allowed in Switzerland or Benelux though… I don’t know if there is a legal height limit in Benelux but I would say you wouldn’t get too far into Belgium with a 4.2 metre trailer before you did a fastback conversion on it.

The GIT cover may be an issue fo the haulier as it’s pretty specialised. at the 4.6m high luxo barge trailer, bet they were well cheesed off when they realised they couldn’t take it abroad. Just as well you are clued up Joe and didn’t have egg on your face when you turned up in France although I don’t suppose that you would even get on the ferry/train.

Hi guys
just so i can put everybody straight on this, i run a small exhibition company (just me and the wife!) I used to run clarion suzukis (then rizla suzukis) hospitality unit for 3 years, for the last 10 years have run a hospitality unit for daf trucks and have a new 105 to tow the unit. They are happy for us to lease it through the winter if we can find some decent clean work for it. Normally through the winter i work for a tour company out of redditch and previous to that i worked for one out of sheffield so have extensive knowledge of europe.
The truck is on our ‘o’ licence and insurance rememberimg that you need fairly specialist insurance for a high value trailer like those that are used in motorsport.
Sorry this turned into a little bit of a cv but muckles if we can be of any help to you please feel free to message me.
Regards
Richard
