Container work

The newsagent in Soton port does well, with all the pies and pasties he sells,if they are still there.

Closed down abruptly the Christmas before last and then knocked down, apparently because of its proximity to Pentalver’s new roundabout.

The newsagent was far more useful :unamused:

Couple of questions…

What’s a “VBS”?

Also, how does the whole adjusting the skeletal trailer thing work? Is it done by hand, by air, ■■?

VBS = Vehicle Booking System

Sliding the trailer…you’re best asking the guys you work with how it works because there are several different types, however the basic principal it that the trailer brake goes on, locking pins in the trailer are released (air) and you then use the unit to slide the trailer.

a VBS is a Vehicle Booking System number, this is used by at least three of the main ports, Southampton, Tilbury (39 Berth only) and Felixstowe (Trinity terminal), the first two ports, your time will be e.g. 14:00 to 15:00, this is the time that your details must be entered into the system, then after your details have been entered, you have 30 minutes to enter your registration number into the first computer at the port

At Felixstowe, if you have a 14:00 to 15:00 VBS time, you just queue up in the same way as normal, but you can arrive between 13:30 and 15:30, so, you actually get 2 hours

the VBS number will be provided by your allocated planner

the sliding skeletal is easy enough once you get used to it, some have a button (same type as a park brake button), pust the button, it apllies the brakes and pulls in the locking pins, move the trailer to the required position with the unit, then pull the button back out, the brakes will not release until the pins are back out again, if the trailer does not have a button, the red air line needs to be transferred to another male fitting on the front of the trailer, this will do the same as the button.

on SDC trailers, you will need to apply the park brake, as pushing the button does not apply the trailer brakes

Hello all i contacted an agency near where i live they have some work out of stourton container base working for roadways.Ive never done containers at all and wouldnt have a clue, also a driver once told me the docks can be very daunting if youve never been places like southamton, felixstowe etc.If you havnt got a clue where you going on the docks its so easy to get lost,i hear that most docks now have a computer system for faster release and acceptance of containers.Would roadways train you up on them or just expect you to know.

You should PM Jessicas Dad as Alex drives for RCL out of Stourton

do.nt need park brake unless setting up for loaded 20 or 45 red air line puts the brakes on(lazy mans way saves walking 20ft) make sure you know what size box your picking up so many times i.ve had to pull off the grid at tilbury and soton when the straddle comes into view with a 20 :unamused: :unamused:

I’m London based and wouldn’t mind giving the containers a go anyone know if any companies are taking on at Tilbury or would i need to travel out a bit currently night tramping for Stobarts out of South Ockendon Essex.

chaversdad:
i start on containers next week, should be interesting  might finally keep the inside of my truck clean for more than 3 hours

might see you in and around teesport then marra

Well…i have my assessment tomorrow for Elite!

Anyone know if their trucks are auto’s or manuals? Been a long time since i drove a manual truck!

Trans T run samskip out of Thurrock area on the same estate as Canute cdepot and LPW truck wash. MJD run containers for ECS out of the area as well but don’t know where they kick off from, Kent somewhere I think, mind you state of some of their gear might put you off and Trans t seem to crack on. Doesn’t Eddie do containers from Dagenham now with the fruit from Spain, might be worth a question. Just do a search on container companies on google round Tilbury area.

And don’t forget or lose your Eric or VBS number at the terminals after your planners have gone home!!! Or you will have to ■■■■ eggs. Cheers.

There are specialist publications in print for container drivers, that are held with one hand !

Although a robust pair of “Crafty Curtains” is a must for “reading” them !
