If I was earning £10+ on the bins , home every night i think I’d be quiet happy , I’m trying to get on the bins with my local council …
Find out which agency does Royal Mail, as they take on newly qualified drivers. Its Manpower here at Crick, dont know who it would be in Glasgow though.
royal mail is manpower nationwide!
Try Turners (Soham), they have a depot in Glasgow. I got a start on artics with there Norwich depot, a few years ago mind, but worth try.
As our man is still a teenager he should count his blessings that he is driving any commercial motor. The bin lorry will give him his 2 years experience. I really think that he should stick at it for a while to show some loyalty to the guy who gave him a start.

Or there’s another way of looking at it that it’s better to start looking for whatever sector of the industry that he really wants to work in and do whatever it takes to (try to) get onto it as soon as possible and the sooner he starts looking and trying the more chance he’s got.
At the point he is now is similar to the point where I was as a new driver and staying with the council shouldn’t be an option. However contrary to all the bs about starting at the bottom and working your way up it’s all about luck and while he’s stuck on the council someone else, who’s entered the industry after him, will be getting the breaks (if those breaks are out there) instead if he doesn’t try to get them.If the breaks aren’t there then he’s lost nothing by at least trying.
It’s ironic how some of the arguments in this topic are relevant to this one.
nowt wrong with a job on the council
commonrail:
once the newness has worn off artics, you`ll wish you stuck with the council.public sector workers enjoy benefits others can only dream of.
I believe Sam is doing the job through an agency so won’t be getting those sorts of benefits though.
I wouldn’t personally want to drive a bin lorry, it’s not the sort of work I had in mind when I started out, freedom of the open road etc.

Muppet road show gone Harry. What about Aberdeen Rate Reducers Last i heard they would take you on.

ARR Craib are that desperate for drivers they are advertising on our local radio, they have a depot at ■■■■■■■■■■■ as well.

Yull&dodds?
They are scum, bloody picket line crossing during the Thatcher era. Plus if your no a pole iam not sure they would want you
You wont ever be able to please every body, I’d just like to make a few things clear though.
The placement I have just now is indeed through an agency, and I’m on borrowed time. It was merely supposed to last a week during March and it’s still continuing, week by week the guys in there are trying to keep me going by giving me the chance to punt bins if i’m not driving in order to keep my income going and giving me some work and experience. They also say that I should continue to look for a job while I’m there as we both know the placement won’t last forever. (They have a lot of staff on long-term sick)
Also, I’m not receiving any benefits because it’s through the agency-council (ie better pension etc).
Like Harry said, it’s not something you imagine yourself doing when you want to become a “trucker”. Stopping every 3 metres or so for 7 hours a day does get very tiring and boring and you can become quite disgruntled with the guys jumping in and out all the time - not their fault of course it’s just their job. I’ve been fortunate to see it from both sides, 1 from being a driver and 2 from actually being a loader and whenever I’m the latter I feel for the driver!
Completely agree there’s nothing wrong with a job on the council and if I was ever offered full time/perm then I’d take it, but they know my heart is set on driving artics and they understand this.

It’s not quite like that, it’s the agency who picked me out of a few applicants and the other guy that got picked walked out the day after because he was asked if he wouldn’t mind litterpicking for a bit!! (I done it and I’m still there.)
In regards to Arr Craib: just phoned them and they said they’re not looking for anyone.

I did commercial waste bins for about six weeks on my old firm covering when the regular bloke was off. I couldn’t stand it. Don’t know what was worse the smell of the bins or the seddon Atkinson I was driving.
Regular bloke loved it well loved his private round on the side.

They’re a bit too far away from me for day to day work, car is quite greedy on fuel and i’m tied into a 3 year contract with it so can’t sell it or swap etc. Don’t think they do tramping work or if they do it’s very little?

I had to move a dustcart once, at a main dealers, to get to my tractor unit after it had been serviced, and the sour reek as soon as I got into the dustcart’s cab is something I have never forgotten.
Nothing wrong with the job of course, but “truck driving” is not one generic job, there is a huge variety of types of work available to suit an individual’s personal wishes and circumstances. For me, from the word “Go”, it was about doing trips to Italy and Spain etc. Another man’s perfect job would be one where he was home every night.
I wish Sam well in finding a tramping job. It’s not the best time to be launched onto the jobs market, but I’m sure something will turn up sooner or later.
