I did commercial waste bins for about six weeks on my old firm covering when the regular bloke was off. I couldn’t stand it. Don’t know what was worse the smell of the bins or the seddon Atkinson I was driving.
I had to move a dustcart once, at a main dealers, to get to my tractor unit after it had been serviced, and the sour reek as soon as I got into the dustcart’s cab is something I have never forgotten.
Nothing wrong with the job of course, but “truck driving” is not one generic job, there is a huge variety of types of work available to suit an individual’s personal wishes and circumstances. For me, from the word “Go”, it was about doing trips to Italy and Spain etc. Another man’s perfect job would be one where he was home every night.
Blimey Harry I had to work with that stink for years hauling bulk refuse containers (no seperation of food waste from all the rest then) with the multilift when I wasn’t using it with the flat body for plant. But although nmm and all the rest will never believe it it was that or try to beat the odds of at least around 10/1 against getting on those Italian runs at the time.Which is why I thought myself lucky to at least get onto trunking for most of my time in the job.
Hi Sam, i passed my class 1 in 2000 and like you i struggled to find work, the place i got my break was Currie European in Dumfries, i also live in Kilmarnock so it was a bit of a struggle driving to Dumfries and back every day but i done it just to get the experience and ive never looked back. You could try them i know they took on new drivers then, Another company i worked for also take on new drivers, but i dont know if your age would go again you for insurance purposes, they are Allways Transport in Hamilton, its Tramping work they do, You could try any of these 2 companys… Nothing ventured nothing gained…
What about Wm Mitchell in Muirkirk. Its probably multi drop work though cos they are on Pallex, but some of the drivers look quite young. And you’ll get to drive a Scania too.
Where have you been for the past 2yrs. MRS are long gone!
Yep, I was told that earlier in the thread, it’s not really my part of the world though so I’m not up to date with local news. Just knew they were from around that way.
nearly there:
I don’t care if it was 100 years ago.there a shower a ***** . Also no I don’t drive a VW.I knocked back regular work at Xmas with them doing other work.I needed the cash but principles mean more to me. Chap there door and let them know you will sell your soul wee yin
They’re a bit too far away from me for day to day work, car is quite greedy on fuel and i’m tied into a 3 year contract with it so can’t sell it or swap etc. Don’t think they do tramping work or if they do it’s very little?
You can drive it back to the dealers hand them the bookpack , keys and tell them you have lost your job, then go home and cancel your direct debit, week after buy a £300-£500 fiesta or corsa type vehicle, several of my younger work mates did this two years ago, when the overtime was stopped and they could no longer afford to run their brand new hot hatches.

Duncan Bannatyne got rich from people who signed a contract and then thought that they could cancel the direct debit.

Slightly different scenario though , hand the car back in good resalable condition, they then have a tangible asset that they can then re-sell to the next victim /customer, with their new margin on top (naturally). The lads that chopped in their shiny new motors had no problems at all with finance companies chasing them.

Oops. Sorry. That will teach me not to read all the posts.

Sam maybe I am barking up the wrong tree , but have you thought about voluntarily work to gain experience. On a different subject my son who is at university studying engineering has had to get a work placement by volunteering to work for sweet FA. Maybe this could be a way to showcase your driving skill shadowing an experienced driver or sharing the driving when empty. Just a thought if you have nothing going on. It could look good on you CV.
I am pleased no-one has jumped on this post thinking it was a good idea.
The difference is that as a graduate engineer your son WILL be able to command the high salary with benefits if he is any good, meanwhile the best driver in the world will still be on minimum wage or thereabouts!
Sam is not 20 yet, he has another 40 to 50 years to gain his stripes in an artic.
Sam. your ambition was to pass your C+E before the end of this year, Well Done. you have done that, so just keep doing what you are doing without selling your sole and a job will appear. That is how we all got where we wanted to be!
