Companies that take on new drivers?

You must be sick looking at posts like this, although it could be worse asking what Stobart are like to work for :open_mouth:

As some of you know, I’m a fairly young and new artic driver looking for work. I’m looking for companies that you know take on new drivers. I’m willing to do some tramping and if it means a start I’d be happy to get the train to the closest point before picking up the lorry and starting the tramping week etc.

I DO have my own transport but obviously I would rather leave my car at home unless there’s a secure company compound. Based in Kilmarnock, Scotland which is about 15 miles south of Glasgow.

Hi Sam, sorry to have to inform you of this but companies are not even taking on experienced drivers, trampers who love the job can’t find work let alone ones who would do it just to get a job they dont like, keep knocking on doors mate, its being at right time at right place, unfortunatly with so many out of work in UK, everyone is knocking on the same doors, Good Luck

Not tramping but Wisemans?

Had a quick look on their website earlier but seems they’re not looking for any drivers at the moment as is the case most places, unfortunately.

How about Midlothian Rate Slashers?

Muppet road show gone Harry. What about Aberdeen Rate Reducers Last i heard they would take you on.

Sam maybe I am barking up the wrong tree , but have you thought about voluntarily work to gain experience. On a different subject my son who is at university studying engineering has had to get a work placement by volunteering to work for sweet FA. Maybe this could be a way to showcase your driving skill shadowing an experienced driver or sharing the driving when empty. Just a thought if you have nothing going on. It could look good on you CV.

I never knew that, as a Special Brew drinking alky I was hoping there might be a job there for me.

ignore the website, mate. they regularly put jobs on the notice boards in work but not on the website. send em an application form (available online) and a CV.

Or find out which agency they use…

Get registered with the agencies in your area and try the local council also any tipper or skip firms. You possibly have to do a dirty or zb job to get experience try Brakes or 6633.

He’s a binman on the council getting £10.50 or so an hour on agency…

Sign up with an agency, ■■■■ up to them, do every little naff job that give you for 6 months, when they get that last minute artic job, you mite be at the front of their minds. It worked for me, 1 week after passing my class 1 and I’m 24. The company then took me on a month later.

Cue all the agency-bashers and accepting-driving-puddle-jumpers-is-below-real-drivers…

I know some of you must be doing your box in shouting at your screen wondering why I want to leave a £10.35ph job to go on to artics for a good bit less than that but money is nothing and it would work out that I still earn more driving artics for 8.00ph than I do driving the bin wagons just now.

Thankful for all the advice but there’s not much suggested in here that I haven’t tried. All the agencies around here want 2 years experience or license held for two years, or 21 or 23/25 etc all the usual bull, the agency that I got the bin wagon job through is a labouring only agency its just the as the council is a good client to them they put up the ad for the bin wagon driver and so happens I got it. I’m 18 about to turn 19 so it’s not possible for me to have held license for 2 years or even have that experience.

Tried Manpower, ADR Network, Driver Hire, Search Consultancy, A1, Workwise, Allneeds, PrimoExec and the list continues.

I know I’m very lucky to even have the job I’ve got but it doesn’t take away my right to want to move on even with my lack of experience, so still appreciate all your views etc.

I fully understand it Sam, for most of the time I was doing European work, I could have been earning £100+ a week more driving a supermarket lorry and doing far fewer hours.

Sam Millar:
…money is nothing…

Maybe to someone who was born into considerable wealth and social standing like yourself, but for the rest of us mere peasants, money is the only reason we go to work.
awaits reply from Harry Monk on defence of Sam Millar

I’m sure Sam is quite capable of defending himself. You might put maximum income as your top priority but you will find that many people would prefer to do a job they enjoy over one they don’t, and would do that for less money.

once the newness has worn off artics, youll wish you stuck with the council.public sector workers enjoy benefits others can only dream of. i dont expect you to take my advice(stick with the council)coz youre itching to get out in an artic....and i understand that, but trust me,the day will come when youll wish you had.
