Companies that Respect their drivers

…Spurred on by comments from another topic.

I have worked for a few companies in Lincs. now and have found a company that does respect its drivers :sunglasses: So.....Do you work for a company that looks after and respects its drivers?
I am a tad fed up with moaning, sniping and groaning on here of late, so let`s have a thread with some good news

This may be a very short thread

Are probably far and wide between and no jobs vacant

john lewis drivers?..

Respect is a two way thing perhaps that’s why we moan too much because we don’t respect the boss! My bosses start at 6am and sometimes are there at 8pm.They cover the night shift when the guy who’s usually in charge is on holiday. They will drive and do local delivery and collections when there are no drivers about and will jump n a forklift if the forties are on a break and someone needs loading or tipping. However plenty of drivers still moan about the way they are treated.

Which company do you work for now? Name and shame the company that dares to respect its drivers

But I do agree, it is refreshing.

Family run firms are by far a lot better than large multi-national concerns with regard to respect,

I work for a company that is run by two blokes with family members from both sides also working in the office and workshops.
i find there is quite a lot of respect in both directions as both MDs are ex drivers and occasionally take to the road themselves (albeit very locally).

there is not much staff turnover with some drivers having been employed for over 20 years.

I feel very lucky that if needed I can call on any of the management for help about anything.

i too work for a company in Dorset where there is two way respect the boss listens and helps always got a smile if you drop a clanger you tell him he helps resolve it he bo33ocks you, then we all move on

I am lucky enough to work for such a company, salaried generously, full sick pay which a few (fortunately) can’t help themselves taking the P of), good tackle, fair hours.

Respect is two ways, the product and work is specialised and it must go so none of these ‘‘ooh i can’t make it cos of the snow’’ wimps wanted or needed.

Since the first day i walked through the door and asked for a job i have been treated with nothing but polite courtesy and respect, which i and most of the lads/lasses return together with reliability and by doing the best we can because this company is worth the effort.

No doubt some twerp will say its arse kissing, its not its old fashioned common courtesy and good manners and many could do with a course in such.

You couldn’t prise me out, i won’t name them as just about the only way you get a job here is by recommendation, no adverts ever.

Small firm, respected and happy

Yes I am respected by my bosses, and I respect them

Hope this helps

I work for a small family firm, can’t beat it in my opinion. I’ve worked for big firms in the past but never again if I can help it.

im happy working where i am and its a big company.
we have two planners or three at a push and they are always decent enough to me on the phone and ask if you can do a job rather than tell you.
but like has been said its a two way, for example a few weeks ago i tipped in derby 11am friday on my last day on shift, rang in with the details and planners asks if i have enough time to wash out and reload immingham back for liverpool. some would whinge and say they dont have the hours, the way i look at it the planner has got one less load to worry about and i earn more. still back at the yard for 5pm, off till the tuesday, office is happy with me job done.

Who you with pete

Hi all.As has already been said its a two way street. If you have no respect for the people running the company then maybe they sense it and reciprocate the feeling.
We have all worked for good and bad companies so it is more of a personal thing between you and them.I mostly worked for small companies.
I always respected the company if the boss and planner were ex drivers as they had usually built the company on hard work themselves, and if you talked to them about anything at least they knew what you were talking about which is not always the case with larger structured companies.
I now work for a great guy,i almost never see him and work directly for the mining co.
My boss has 2trucks in the mine,5bulk tippers outside,4 wheel loaders,3 snowplough trucks,3trucks driving asphalt,2 mixer trucks
and a driving school catering for young people to learn to drive hgv’s,large wheel loaders, fork trucks and mechanics.
You can’t help but respect the guy,who is by the way a millionare,as he drives EVERTHING in the company himself even at weekends[he is out driving the snowplough tonight]
He is very relaxed wth us saying ‘‘you know how to drive and repair the truck so why should i bother you’’.You get on and do the job and collect the money each month, everyones happy.
It goes a bit quite in Jan\Feb so we prepare the trucks for spring and the rest of the time we have free[on pay].Mike

What the others said. Dead mens’ shoes at our place and I got lucky to get in when I did.

Fortunate also inasmuch as winter is our busiest period which leaves me the summer to enjoy my bikes to the full.

Juddian’s post says it all for me; I’m very fortunate to be in the same situation, and I sincerely hope this job’ll see me through to retirement.

+1

It’s a two way street in my experience. Treat people the way you would like to be treated and generally it works pretty well. I can’t be arsed with all the people who go around whinging and whining rather than getting on and doing the job, and my bosses seem to think the same way.

Life’s too short to waste it on being a negative [zb]!

Had a spell on the agency working for then DHL at Hatfield a while back,a most respectful workplace ( both ways ).

Who you with pete

work for hoyer red fleet mate

Have done agency at Stalkers (Brampton) lovely people, family firm hope they come through the recession OK

regularly between

ASD Metals (Carlisle) small team, sound people in the warehouse and wagons, very helpful.

Fedex (Gretna) most of my shifts are in here, freight through here doubled at the end of last year, again really good people, not just at the Gretna Hub but there seems to be a good atmosphere throughout the company. Given the amount of stuff going through the company and the sheer range of collections/destinations and types of packages, things do sometimes go ■■■■■■■■■■ (road closures etc.,) which out a hell of a pressure on the TMs and planners. I’ve only once been seriously hacked off by one of the planners, turned out noone had told them I’d been called in at the last minute to replace a driver who’d taken ill on the road and had to return to base, I’d left the depot 2hrs behind schedule, so my return trailer was holding up as many as 6 wagons waiting to take stuff onwards to the depots and that in turn meant all the van guys would be delayed. Anyway they thought I’d been dawdling and I was ■■■■■■ off as I’d done everything I could to try and reduce the delay only to get ‘attitude’. All sorted now though :grimacing:

You really couldn’t pay me enough to be a Fedex planner or for that matter DPD, UPS, or any of the other parcel carriers must be a total frickin nightmare sometimes.

Even though I’m agency, I’m appreciated at the above 3 companies and if I decided to go full time I’d be happy to work at any of them, in turn I get on, do the job and if things are going to hell I help out if I can.
