Volvo have something much better, iShift

iShift…pull it backwards to go forwards :unamused: and push it forwards to go backwards

If that’s the only thing you can find to moan about on the iShift then you’ve pretty much proved my point

switchlogic:
When was the last time you drove a truck Carryfast old chap? Just the year will do…

The last thing I drove was an early 1990’s POS Merc 2534 in the late 1990’s and if that gutless, synchro box, heap of junk, was supposed to be progress :open_mouth: :imp: over a ZF constant mesh 1970’s DAF 2800 alone a 13 speed Fuller 1980’s MAN you can keep progress.

To be fair that would have been the Matador.

Which leaves the question who would you rather employ. The type of driver moaning about ‘old’ trucks in the OP,who actually needs an auto shift,or one who’d actually prefer to drive an 18 speed but will drive the I shift if you really must have one. :bulb:

Where was the OP moaning about getting to grips with a manual? :open_mouth:
To me it read that he was happy to get stuck in and improve his skills…
You really are full of guff! :imp:

You did it a few pages back as well, claiming that new drivers are not capable of being proper drivers, like they’re genetically deficient in some way. Why don’t you stop looking at your ego in the mirror and get real… :unamused:

I’ve been asked to do a bit of stuff in an old ERF Olympic before, did I run away crying like a little girl?
No, like the OP I did what 99% of people would do and got stuck in…

So yeah, you’re off your nut!

You obviously missed the bit 'as long as it’s not a ‘crash box’.Bearing in mind that as has been said ‘crash boxes’ went out soon after WW2.Even that still being a case of get on with it bearing in mind that we still had things like a 1940’s Matador to drive on the council in the early 1980’s. :unamused:On that note I don’t think I’ve said anything different to nmm in that regard.

What difference does a crash box make to my point, you give the drivers of today one, and they’ll do EXACTLY the same as drivers of your era. They will make crunch, grind and whine until they get to grips with it…

Sorry CF, but you’re not special. Well not in that way anyway!

switchlogic:

I’m not moaning about it I think it’s very good it just amuses me of the logic of back to go forward and forward to go back

So you’ve not driven anything made in the last 20 years but tell us exactly what we should think about modern trucks and the modern transport industry? You can’t compare anything you’ve driven with a modern iShift.

Well it’s just a switch isn’t it. In my Smartcar you push it left for forward. Interestingly I had never thought about the back forwards thing until now! You know it’ll get on my ■■■■ now you brought it up. ■■■■ you!

Automatic cars are the same, back for Drive, forward for Reverse. Totally illogical.

I’d guess that 'as long as it’s not a so called ‘crash box’ ’ means that he’d have actually walked away from a job involving driving anything with a Fuller in it,while obviously being not exactly happy with even a synchro ?.

Which just leaves the question of what was causing the zb gear shift quality bearing in mind that DAF synchro box installations are usually better than most.

Oh, so we’re back to the old classic CF tactic of avoiding the point and trying to change the subject…

You’re nothing if not predictable!

Old 67. Sharp as a razor.

Proof that some old things are very well engineered indeed. Nice one John.

Where’s the big deal I shift is just an automated Fuller. While yes I can see the attraction in the combination of an automated manual constant mesh box.

None of which is the point in this case.

Now then Carryfast, prepare to be educated.

Mechanically there is little to separate a Fuller and Ishift, both are constant mesh transmissions, the Ishift however makes perfectly timed shifts every time thanks to its communication with the engine, the Fuller stays where it is until the driver decides when to shift.

Some would say that it is that fact that proves their point, you are surely one of those, but so am I, you see it doesn’t matter what else is going on, Ishift will make the shift at exactly the right time, a driver can become distracted, he can get the hump with it after missing a gear and ram it in, he may just have the hump after a row with his wife and ram it in (ooo err missus) Ishift doesn’t.

I have somehow managed to earn a bit of a reputation within the lorry community both in the UK and across the pond and people pay me to have an opinion about these kind of things, so if you think about it, that makes my opinion much more valid than let’s say, oh I don’t know, someone who hasn’t driven a lorry designed within the past 30yrs or so, or someone that only drove a handful of different lorries which would give them a complete lack of comparison.

Which when you think about it realistically makes the opinion of an agency driving newbie that has driven a different lorry almost every day for a few weeks a far more valid and considered opinion than somebody with your experience.

You can learn a lot more from listening or reading than you can from talking or typing…

Now let’s all be honest. Who’d seriously want to return to old kit, be it a transmission or the whole truck. I could see a desire to have a manual over an arsetronic, but not much else. I wouldn’t want a Volvo manual box over my ishift, let alone a crash or twin. I can understand where newmercman is coming from, as that equipment is still bread and butter in the states. I’m sure it would be nice and nostalgic to jump in an EC10 on steel with a twin splitter, but I guarantee 90% of drivers wouldn’t last more than a couple of hours. Most of the technology of the past 20 years has helped the driver massively. I dare say we’d all be feeling the same as the op if we were handed the keys to an old bag of nails. I’d get the hump if I had to fill out a paper tacho ever again
