New to the forum here but been a trucker for many years. I took a break from trucking for a few years and have recently joined a company that seemed okay. (Won’t be naming it for now)
The day rate seems reasonable and was told there could be the off chance of nights out. This isn’t want i really want for now, as I’ve done enough in the past, but I’m happy to stick with it for now.
I then asked what the allowance for this was and was told there isn’t any! The driver is massively inconvenienced, having to park up, wash, find food or purchase their own, nights away from family and, and yet the driver is in no way compensated.
I actually couldn’t believe this or get my head around it. Its just a flat day rate.
Is this a common trait now with companies in general?
Day rate after tax is 120. But I’m just not convinced its worth the hassle.

Never heard of that before.
Unless they are paying a very good day rate, I would be taking steps…
Big ones…In the opposite direction.
No subsistence allowance = no nights away.
Day rate eh, and presumably they want to work you right up to the legal max.
Seems odd that you quote take home pay and not gross for the day rate, is it some dodgy place that pays you in notes on a self employed basis, no pay slip no NI paid? is there a valid operators disc in the screen?
Tell 'em cheerio mate, plenty of places appreciating their staff more since so many EE’s shipped off home.
I see youve added that the day rate is £120 after tax. Depending on the exact job, hours actually worked, convenience, region youre in, and many other pieces of different length string…OK…
For a 9 hr day, clean easy work, close by home? Good.
For a 15hr spread and a night out? Not good.
Just my opinion. Others may disagree, and some will undoubtedly not be getting out of their bed for that.
Things have changed and very much not for the better in the intervening years.
I would be very quickly having a thorough look at your contract of employment to make sure there is no mention of their claimed right to deduct any amount from your wages. A trend over the last few years has been to claim the right to deduct for damage to the vehicle or its load, to customers property, or any consequential losses to the company. Companies have been known to deduct from wages owed, claiming losses incurred following not enough leaving employment notice given by the employee and for the cost of any uniform, PPE, Boots etc issued.
As for night out money they can’t get away with the issue claiming they don’t do any because they have already told you they do occasionally. This should have been included in their letter offering you the job along with the rate paid (which is regulated byr HMRC). Or have you not had anything in writing from them?
Second thoughts: If you are going in as self employed, or as your own company supplying drivers rather than PAYE, then the situation re all of this is different.
Don’t know company name. But lad next door.to me on his late 20s just passed his test. Has Got a job working out of Trafford park. Honestly don’t know the name. There a small kind of fly by night company share a yard with maritime they run old Martime trucks.
Anyway point is he tramps out Monday to fri.
Said his pay is £200 a day regardless how many hours he works That includes night out money.
So im reality it’s £175 a day. Plus £25 .
No idea how many hours a day he does…but he’s happy it’s his 1st job gets some experience.
Quick calculation based on 13 hours a day is £13.45 an hour.
^^ that’s not a bad first gig at all, if he does 60 hours a week he’s on 16.60 or so an hour, course if he’s hammering on 75 hours it aint so brill, ut there will be some shorter days and weeks too.
we presume he’s not taxed on the £25 that will be night out pay, and we hope he gets £175 a day when on holiday.

Lot of blokes here on much worse than that.
I
Maybe it is as you say. If so, sounds good.
But.
It is described
edd1974:
small kind of fly by night company
Maybe it is £200 per day, no PAYE, no hols, no sick, no tax, no NI, etc?
Clearly I dont know the company, and am only looking at Eds post. But “small, fly-by-night company” makes me think twice.
From what can make it some fella bought some x Martime trucks .
Does some subcontracted work for them to breweries .
and on haulage excahnge for work in-between jobs
He seems happy enough there .
As say. Pays £200 a day no idea if it’s cash in hand PAYE or what ever.

So if you’re working a 5 day week it’s £32,000 a year gross/ £615 a week.
So for the hourly rate based on a 5 day week for £615.
If you’re working 45hrs it’s £13.66/hr
If you’re working 50hrs it’s £12.30/hr
If you’re working the industry average 55hrs it’s £11.18/hr
If you’re working 60hrs £10.25/hr

A few of the EE start up firms here are paying just a day rate aimed at drivers from where they from as nite out money rare out there

Really?
How many “EE start up firms here” are there?
If a “few of them” are doing that, surely there must be quite a lot around?
No night out money would simply mean no night out. I would make that perfectly clear from the outset so there was no confusion. There are plenty of jobs out there that pay properly with the proper allowances, even down here in Cornwall.
Even if you think ah it’s only one a week. So on average one a week over a year is 52 nights out x by £25 = £1300 a year that should be in your pocket tax free.
They a taking the ■■■■ out of you clear and simple
For a first post it does seem like one just to trigger people ha. I have never heard of anywhere that wouldn’t pay night out money, heard of crap ones like £16-£18 a night instead of the typical £25 but never nothing.

My guess is he’s working out of Royal brewery at Manchester
Pulling small pack loads,Maritime have some work out of there now and it’ll be steady away.
