Just skipped through this but got the theme.
If anybody is daft enough to do nights out unpaid for whatever reason, they deserve all they get
Cheers
Yep.
I work for a small but well established family company out of Swansea. I’m paid four nights out a week (unless of course I’m on holiday) at £26.20 each.
no night out money = no nights out .
Do they pay parking or is it a cosy layby for one being rocked to sleep with every passing car / van/ truck/ bus ?
Our lot pay a flat rate
1- if you work round the doors (Northern Ireland ) all the time (day man ) - £■■■/day - home every night .
2 - if you dont get on a boat (Ireland North and South with nights out ) - £■■■ /day + night out money only for the nights you are away
3- if you get on a boat (Scotland , England , Wales as well as Ireland North and South as and when required - £■■■/ day = nights out (4-5 a week) +Snap parking
rates are set and we have a whats app group where the rates are all there for every driver to see so that every driver doing the same work gets the same money regardless of how long they have been here . New starts get asked what they want to do and as much as possible the office tend to try to keep you on that work. Yes sometimes some daymen will be asked to do a night out but they get as much warning as possible and its not pushed on anyone - 4 or 5 drivers will be rang and asked to see which one it suits best - it’s not unknown to be shipped back in from a week out in Scotland / England to end the week with a night out in Ireland before running home on the Friday . I had to do that this week -
Out on the 08.00 from Larne on Monday morning - tipped Goole Monday evening .
Loaded Immingham Tuesday morning , tipped Ormskirk loaded Preston and back to Cairnryan
Wednesday left Cairnryan tipped Airdre
Thursday loaded Paisley 1200 boat from Cairnryan to Larne swapped trailers in Larne and headed for Mallow in Southern Ireland .
Friday tipped Mallow , loaded Nenagh , tipped and reloaded Dublin and back to our yard for a 18.30 finish
Apologies for the late replies.
Thank you for everyone’s insight. I will be staying around for a few week to gain back experience and then looking elsewhere.
Shift pattern is a 5 + 6.
Nope, this isn’t a joke, although I thought it was when I was told lol
The job is easy. Its just that there can be messing around in between that can cause you to need to sleep out. It isn’t intentional tramping, in a sense, but still…
I would rather something with a little more life/work balance, rather than an unexpected night out and no allowance. Bonkers.
Juddian:
No subsistence allowance = no nights away.
Day rate eh, and presumably they want to work you right up to the legal max.
Seems odd that you quote take home pay and not gross for the day rate, is it some dodgy place that pays you in notes on a self employed basis, no pay slip no NI paid? is there a valid operators disc in the screen?
Tell 'em cheerio mate, plenty of places appreciating their staff more since so many EE’s shipped off home.
no no, this is a well established company. Its just how they measure pay. I guess it makes it sound more appealing or something.
Thanks for the advice pal

It’s people accepting and taking these sorts of situations that allows the companies to keep offering them and getting drivers to do them. No money for nights out, a 5-6-5-6 shift pattern, a day rate where I am certain you will maxing hours especially if there are nights out expected. You seriously do not need to accept anything like this and you aren’t even a new driver. There will be something better than this out there - even if its not driving.

Hi Guys,
New to the forum here but been a trucker for many years. I took a break from trucking for a few years and have recently joined a company that seemed okay. (Won’t be naming it for now)
The day rate seems reasonable and was told there could be the off chance of nights out. This isn’t want i really want for now, as I’ve done enough in the past, but I’m happy to stick with it for now.
I then asked what the allowance for this was and was told there isn’t any! The driver is massively inconvenienced, having to park up, wash, find food or purchase their own, nights away from family and, and yet the driver is in no way compensated.
I actually couldn’t believe this or get my head around it. Its just a flat day rate.
Is this a common trait now with companies in general?
Never heard of that before.
Unless they are paying a very good day rate, I would be taking steps…
Big ones…In the opposite direction.
A few of the EE start up firms here are paying just a day rate aimed at drivers from where they from as nite out money rare out there
Really?
How many “EE start up firms here” are there?
If a “few of them” are doing that, surely there must be quite a lot around?
Where is “nite[sic] out money rare” I wonder?
Quite a few around Felixstowe and tilbury areas often see adverts in Romanian and other languages

Seeing adverts in a foreign language doesn`t mean it is a “startup company” nor a “EE” company.
Quite possibly long standing companies looking to replace drivers, and most companies advertising in the UK for people to drive in the UK are, (guess what?) UK companies, and they should be properly regulated under UK law.
No mention of where you think “over there” is where “nite[sic] out money is rare”?

I will rephrase it for you there are a lot of new firms started up over the last few years especially since the Ltd company rules changed. The advert often have a foreign sounding company name as well as the contact name. Also as an external TM with a advert for my services out there I get a couple of calls per month from prospective operators and over the last 2 years they have been predominantly from foreign men looking to apply for an Operator license for 3-5 units sometimes more. If you use Facebook some of the haulage or TM oriented pages are awash with people looking for parking or operators centres in the north Kent and Essex areas where there is a large amount of traction only work in Purfleet tilbury and up to Felixstowe
My original post that there are firms offer just a day rate with no night out allowance and they tend to be from Eastern European operated companies is valid but I do know two British operated firms that also do this one claims to do this as the drivers argued about who got the most so he averaged them out into a all incumbent day rate
Unless they are paying £300+ a day
I never take a job that is day rate.
I’ve had too many arguments about me being on day rate and them sending me back out on 11+ hours.

Yep, I prefer hourly rate any day.
I have a mate on salary, and I can’t understand why he does 15 hour days.
If it was me it would be no more than a 13 hour max,.and less if I knew I’d get away with it.
Georgie1305:
Day rate after tax is 120.
so its really
£120/ day if you get finished up and get to go home
£95 / day and £25 when you have to night out - you get no extra for staying out , food , parking .
In my humble opinion your being taken for a mug .
Big steps
out the gate
and far away .
Would be my advice

I’ve looked…
At the calculations for hours worked for pay earned and which ever you you look at it, it’s crap money.
+1 Big steps.
