Many of you will know who I work for and for those who don’t it’s Browns/Turners. Well this morning 2 days into my week down in Kent at 0330 I was awoken by my wife telling me she was en route to our local hospital in Lincolnshire via an ambulance with suspected quite well developed septicemia after having key hole surgery at the beginning of last week.
After a quick call to my boss to explain, I was asked if I was legal to drive (I was) as an offer of alternative travel was offered, I told them I’d get the truck back and then get back to my kids who were being looked after by a family member before going to see my wife, when I got back to the depot I was told just leave everything and they’ll sort it and told me they would sort me out with leave for as long as needed.
Just thought my employers deserve a thank you and a little ‘bigging up’ for their compassion.
Thanks they said at the hospital she was starting to go into shock, not very happy with our gp tbh, they just were not interested when my wife was trying to get some help on Monday but the hospital have been great. Hopefully she should be ok, they filling her with antibiotics but might need to operate again
Well done to your employer, hope the missus gets better soon. Not long ago my mother in law was rushed into hospital, could I get a response from coop to let me come back early, noooo. Supervisor who was going to ring me back disappeared for 4 hours. Lucky all worked out well in the end, however when they want a favour from me…
Thanks for the well wishes everyone, I wasn’t fishing for them but there very appreciated, I know Turners get a lot of stick, my depot isn’t too bad generally and we all think the grass is greener from time to time, but whenever I’ve needed to be home for the family, they have always made sure I get back and today was above and beyond.
First and foremost, hope the good lady makes a speedy and full recovery mate.
Secondly, it must be good to know that your bosses are humans and not just company robots. Nice responses from everyone, by the way.
Good companies are not always about the wages- Murfitts get a lot of bad press but years ago I was doing the beer barrel collection run in Southern Italy( any muppets who have done that know its 4-5 days trogging around little villages in the middle of no where) when got a text to drop my drag and run to a services , pick up a driver whose wife had been taken ill and get him to Rome airport to get him home, they dumped my job and his to get him home- now that’s worth more than money in the pocket.
The other side of the coin I was working for a well known Teesside haulier and got an infection behind my knee cap, which meant my knee cap blew, I was at the southern depot and had to get a cab to the hospital, on return , on crutches the MD and her husband were at the depot about to leave to come back North East, and they did leaving me to get a lift back with the night trunk and then trying to get a lift home from the main depot late at night , which is the middle of no where.
It is nice when a company can do the humane thing and help their employees at times of trouble.
Long time ago when I was working for Europa, one of our drivers who was at the Milan depot had a phone call and had to get back to the UK pronto due to a family crisis. I was in the yard in Erith when the TM asked, could I get to Milan ASAP to bring the truck home, as the driver was being flown home (paid by the company) as we spoke. No problem I said, thinking that I would double-man that evenings wagon to Italy. Not so , heres your plane ticket, we’ll get you to Stanstead and you’ll be picked up from the airport in Milan. Have your time off when you get there, then bring the groupage back.
Would’ve prefered the double man option, I absolutely hate flying
Gold star for Browns/Turners these moments bring home whats important and thanks for sharing this in your time of worry.
Sure she will be OK now shes in good hands.
GP’s are a waste of space sometimes, they only go by the text book to diagnose what the problem is and sometimes get it well wrong.
Went to mine the other week saying I felt great but looked awful, anyway after an hours consultation he came to conclusion I was a ■■■■■■.
[didn’t really happen but hope its put a smile on your face in this time of stress]
When I was with Maritime I had a domestic when I was in Leeds . Got a bit of negatory from a low life planner and told him I would bring the kit and kaboodle back to FX. He arranged for me to change trailers on the A1 but said I would have to work the next morning. I took the rest of the week off. Once the middle management knew the prob. they were as good as gold.
I might find out what happened to that planner but knowing modern transport he’s licked his way to the top.
Best wishes to your wife mate, hope she makes a speedy and full recovery. I’d like to echo what many have said about Turners too, fair play to them. Mind you, to be fair they just gave a green light to what you or any of us would have done anyway regardless of company permission.
That’s probably true but still takes nothing away from the company, there are plenty that would expect you to soldier on. At least he’s still got a job to go back to. Nice for once to hear a good story, apart from the illness of course. Hope all is well and she makes a full & speedy recovery.
