Col du Mont-Cenis

I have used Mt Blanc and Frejus many times but would like to know if anyone at any time has taken an artic over Mont-Cenis Pass (D 1006) Fr. to I. or vice versa ?

Long time ago but in 1991 I went over it on a motorbike and saw two Magnums going the other way.

Yep. BUT there is now a 19t limit on it I believe. That’s 19t plated weight so no artics. Very pretty and interesting to road.

I never went over…

The top. A few of my buddies did in the summer months and said it was a nice drive.

This would be 20+ years ago now so there may well be a weight limit on it.

You may get a better response if you post this question on the Old timers Forum. There are quite a few posts about Mont Cenis, with pictures, from back in day when a lot used it. I only did it a couple of times in the early 80`s.

Went over there a few times in the old days, beautiful scenery, and a lot cheaper than the blanc…was a truck stop up there too i have nighted out in…weight limit in place now. i went a few years ago en route to Italy in my motorhome…

Went over from France to Italy in July 1993, with trepidation :open_mouth: I had heard it was a bit hairy in places and the chap I was running with suggested it and I followed meekly. Came back a few days later through the Frejus !
Glad to say I at least did it once… No pictures, no proof, but I know I did it

As others have mentioned, its weight limited now but a great road nonetheless. Mont Blanc is expensive but a superb bit of road and offers some nice scenery. Frejus is my least favourite…

The old route out of the Frejus down into Italy was a bit daunting to me when I first started that run, then a year or so later came the new section of Autostrada and a lot of the ‘fun’ was taken out of the journey then. Used to stop with the rest of the Hercock boys at a Restaurant down the old road from the tunnel, big rough old parking area on the left and the restaurant was a low set dirty old brown building on the right hand side. They also sold lots of dubious bottles of wines and spirits that I hadn’t a clue about but used to buy on the way home because they looked ‘exotic’

Done it several times in a 7.t and 3.5t in the past.
It now has a 19t weight limit on it but if you ever get the chance to drive it do it. Amazing road with beautiful views, there’s even a cafe at the top next to the lake.

Yup & to many times to mention (like many others) in fact was up there the night Elvis died if memory serves me correctly ?
It was the only way if you wanted to avoid the Blanc & Cluses with your questionable permit

I was going to use it in April but it was still closed .

Thanks for the advice, but looking for todays drivers who have done it. Do you know anything about the frejus rail tunnel which is said to have preceeded the frejus road tunnel (c 1980) ?

Thanks for that twoninety88, I too remember the old way down to I from the frejus tunnel. Have driven commercials in africa canada yanky land eu and saudi but that bit of road is where I felt the most vulnerable of all. Nowadays the new autostrade can be a bit devilish if you don’t relise how long and steep it is. The beast can get away from you very easily if you don’t keep it in check.

Ah yes…back to cluses, dodgy permits and Murfitts. I wonder if any of mick murfitt’s trucks are still at cluses ?

Looks like I missed out on the experience. I was driving FR to I before the 19t limit was put on but always went either frej or the blanc by habit. Ah well, won’t get another chance now but VERY interesting to hear all your info about it. Thanks for responses all.

Done it twice.
First time was empty from Lyon to Turin for a back load and risked the weight limit.
Second time was loaded when the Blanc and Frejus were closed due to bridges getting washed out, would have been around 1994. The Italian police were diverting everyone and his dog over the Cenis.
Took about 8 hours to get from Susa to Modane, going down the staircase after the lake was completely lit up with brake lights. Usually about 3 hours.

Lol …
Lets face it most had Iffy permits & cluses could be expensive on the wrong night, but you always made it through somehow.
Mt Geneva was handy when you needed to keep a low profile.
