chris boardman

don’t know if anyone read it in the paper but Olympic cyclist chris boardman is demanding a new rule in the highway code where you have to give way to cyclists on the inside if you are turning left, all very well but if you get say half a dozen or so on the inside in London and the lights go green, you wait to let them go,next thing is the lights go red again, then more come through on the inside and it starts all over again, you will never get anything done if that happens.

Do keep up at the back please

Which brings me to the point: I think there should be more indicators down the sides of trucks, for eg, on a trailer 6 on a rigid 4…surely that would give cyclists the 100% guarantee that a vehicle is turning left or right ( unless the driver has forgotten to indicate or turn them off…In fact i believe they should be made compulsory…would certainly give more security to a driver and also to a cyclist who Dares to ride down my inside ( could also apply to some car drivers.)

chris boardman is saying he wants us to sit on a green light if we are turning left in order to let cyclists go straight on,i doubt it will never happen as too many drivers will be held up while waiting for the cyclists to go through, and we all know how slow some cyclists can be,but having said that it may well happen as we drivers know the government is anti vehicle.

So he wants undertaking a vehicle to become legal…■■?

It’ll start with the cyclists, then other drivers will think ‘ooh, think I’ll do the same’…

Yeah such as mopeds, pizza delivery bikes, couriers etc.

yeah, thats how I read it,the way I see it their argument would be because they are vulnerable, but we know some [not all] cyclists are stupid, who would go on the inside of a car, van, hgv, or bus turning left,i certainly wouldn’t if I was a cyclist

I think some sort of mechanism should be invented. A “safety” device. London loves “safety” so how could they argue.

When a lorry is turning left and a cycle is scudding down the side, a thin scoop with a cage over the top comes out of the side of the trailer and lifts the bike up. It raises up with the cyclist still swearing inside. The lorry carries on turning left and the cycle is taken where ever the lorry is going, even if it was trying to go straight on  .

A warning (not too loud, just above audible) goes off in the cab and after a mile or ten the lorry can pull over - In a safe place of course - and the driver presses a button which releases the scoop and sets the cycle back on the gutter  . Lorry drives off.

Another benefit is everyone seeing a cyclist in the cage, it’s a sort of mile of shame for the cyclist. Everyone can see the cyclist that tried to get himself killed. A bit like those heads on spikes in medieval times. A visual deterrent too

Sounds a lot like that TV program where they had a sting truck loaded with empty boxes of electronics left open on a busy street. Some scallywag would hop up and take a look. The doors would shut and the curtains drawn to reveal a giant prison cell on wheels as he was carted around town for people to laugh at.

That sounds like sort of the thing, except this has more of a practical application  .

I don’t know if there are any laws about using indicators, but I would like to see people fined who don’t indicate as and when they should and I would like to see cyclist fined if they go up the inside of any vehicle indicating to move left. £200 a go, a ploiceman could soon pay for his own time. In fact bmw drivers would soon be contributing to knock a penny of income tax.

I think Boardmans proposal is about as daft as they come.

Bring it on. They’ll very quickly see that not every new idea is a good one.

So when we wait at green lights to let cyclists go straight on cars coming from opposite direction thinks we are letting them go first (or try and cut across in front off us as cars hate getting caught behind a lorry) but don’t see the cyclist.

agreed

Noneed to change the Highway Code.Enforce the bit that says courtesy and respect to and from other classes of road user. They can respect us while we try to keep them alive.

I would like Boardman to answer one question, how can you give way to something you can’t see. Does he think all these drivers ran over the cyclist on purpose.
