SO… It seems that Calcium Carbide might be the main ingredient for detonation… The other chemicals mentioned in the article are oxidisers - which would in turn form explosive mixtures with mundane things like sawdust, custard powder, or even sugar.

I remember seeing an old carbide lamp on a bicycle once.The old guy explained to me how water was dribbled on to a carbide tablet to produce acetylene gas.Those poor fire men probably didnt know what they were up against ,killed trying to do their duty against impossible odds.
