Cheap sunglasses v expensive

I have a bit of an obsession with sunglasses. Two pairs of Oakleys, a pair of Tom Fords and a pair of Ray Bans. #fancy

For driving in you can’t beat Ray-Ban.

I know they are expensive and to be honest I bought my first pair because I saw them on miami vice, but having used them for driving in southern Europe I won’t buy anything else. I always buy the greyish-green lenses and they are perfect for reducing the suns glare while still maintaining clear vision.

I have also owned a few pairs of Oakleys from back in my mountain biking days and in my opinion the Ray-Ban lenses are in a different class.

Cheers
Neilf

might be silly to you, you’ll look silly with no VISION driving ( ERR ■■■■ ALL WITH NO LICENCE! ) vision = one pair of eyes! Going to buy a crutch less pair of knickers now from selfridges in the Trafford centre!

No the ones with a picture of Homer Simpson on the front are better, you only have 1 pair of b###ks so oook after them !!!

Ray Bans every time. The pair I wear regularly at the moment are polarised and have plastic lenses which makes them very light, but being plastic lenses they are prone to scratching so have to be returned to their case every tim they come off. At present they have one very small scratch and are now 9 years old and worn every day. I also own a pair of Ray Ban Aviators bought in 1988 which still get used occasionally and are in perfect condition.

Personally i use Ray Ban’s Glasses and sunglass’s. Always been fussy about glass’s…

To be honest mate, they only get scratched if you let them get scratched. Invest in a decent set and look after them, i always take my glasses off when getting out of the wagon and pop them on the dash to save them getting damaged and I store them in a decent case when not in use. Last set of Ray Bans I had them around 4 years and there wasnt a scratch on the lens’s only updated as my prescription changed.

Just out off interested I failed my medical at 21 so have had to wear glasses since(my eyes where perfect when I had my 7.5 medical at 18) I have a check up every 2 years and they have deteriorated each time I want a pair off prescription sunglasses but don’t want to shell out hundreds every 2 years, how much roughly are your ray bans or just a rough idea on how much a normal pair would cost thanks.

Consider yourself lucky I need a new pair every year :frowning: there is a website called glasses2you which are quite cheap and I’ve never had a problem with the prescription. Then put them on your tax as a business expense :stuck_out_tongue:

aldi, 3prs of lenses and a nice soft case less than a fiver and if i forget them (never in same vehicle 2 days running) wtf, only lost a fiver

Oakley eyepatch 2 for me. I aquired them from a P&O ferry …

I agree with drummerkev. Buy as expensive as you can afford and then cherish them. I always used to buy the cheapest I could find until I tried an expensive pair, now I’ll never go back to cheap again.

I tell my students on trackdays when they gloat about only paying fifty quid for a crash helmet “if you’ve got a fifty quid head then buy a fifty quid helmet”!

Your eyes are the same, you don’t get a free set.

If you check out the SHARP helmet assessment scheme, plenty of cheap helmets offer as much (if not more ) protection than some of their more expensive counterparts. RIDE magazine also found this to be the case in some instances. The pricier helmets are usually much more comfortable and better ventilated etc. But not necessarily better at protecting your head in a crash.

Eg. Arai Condor is £240 and gets 2 stars. The Airoh Speedfire is £60 and gets 4 stars…

Mind you, as a bike instructor way back, I used to say the same as you!

Got a cheapy pair ambervision off ebay they are cracking…cost about £5 .and a scratch resistant pair of oakley juliet they are polarised but a whopping price of £270.from a cycling shop guy on the counter recons they are the best

Airoh helmets aren’t considered cheapskate in the off road world, if they were good enough for David Knight they’re good enough for me.

If it had grease marks on the rolled cuffs from squeezing in behind the close coupled fridge that would have been me. LOL.

£40 Bloc shades with polarised lens that i also use for skiing. Great for clear sunny days, and stops the glare off the road when the road is wet. Perfect.

Surprised by some of the replies here - you people earn some cash :exclamation:
I think if you buy cheap, you think cheap, ie’ if I leave them in another motor - they only cost me a fiver’. Pay a couple of bob and it makes you look after them. You wouldn’t catch me cleaning mine on my shirt
