channel tunnel

:unamused: As a frequent channel hopper throughout the year, I’ve seen the rapid demise of the fast service of the tunnel, it seems now that during the busy times it is as fast to come back on the boat!!! So here we are in the christmas rush down to 2 freight trains an hour because the car\bus trains are busy so yet again the freight service is put on the back burner!! If it wasn’t for freight there wouldn’t be a channel tunnel!!

Its crap but just the way it works, live stock before freight, that’s why freight trains give way to passenger trains and that’s why coaches are faster than us.

Are livestock aloud on the channel tunnel ?

Oooh

People of cattle class

I came back on the train a couple of weeks ago , and it was the first time I’d used it .
I wish I hadn’t as it ended up costing a lot of time and the knock on effect was having to run in on a Saturday .
We were lucky though , as we arrived and got on the bus , the driver got a radio message saying the whole service had now been suspended , so it could have been worse

Oh , and the infamous " mouthy , been there done that " contingent were present , so I pretended I was asleep

Should’a got the ferry

Hi Super R500 and Welcome to Trucknet.

Sounds like a real pain, apparently they have new open carriages it’s causing trucks to be damaged in the Tunnel. It seems to have been going on for weeks and they still haven’t sorted it. I believe you pay extra for the tunnel because it’s supposed to be quicker to get across the channel, hardly seems worth it at the moment.

I have always hated using it, and very rarely have i not encountered some delay always seeing trains that are running half empty , It may have a journey time of 45-50mins but add 1-2 hrs wait in the lanes and the dover -calais ferry can be quicker, But the food on the train is (zb) i wouldn’t give it the dog, The ferry was much better, better edible food(P&O) Free showers, you can stretch your legs, watch tv even have a beer (if your going to be parking up for the night once you land, I can remember the days of the dover truckstop next to dover port, it came in very handy

There is no food Tommy, or coffee, or tables or anything, well not that you can drink anyway. All finished

yep , not even tables , just an emergency evacuation notice where there was once one .

watch tv even have a beer (if your going to be parking up for the night once you land,

I know I’ll get moaned at for saying , but why would anyone want to drink any kind of alcohol before having to drive a truck off a ferry ■■

It’s not in the interests of the road transport industry to use the tunnel anyway because it just generates revenues and investment returns on infrastructure which benefits uk-european rail freight and therefore helps it to compete with those same road transport operators.IE if all truck operators stopped using it then it’s obvious that rail freight charges to use it would need to increase to make up for the lost revenues. :bulb:

Charley, the rail freight operators also wish the tunnel wasn’t there as it disrupts their services too, probably more so now since the new technology can only do about 30mph

Dollands Moor is a huge bottleneck for both passenger and freight traffic from Waterloo and Willesden

If the tunnel wasn’t there it would effectively mean an end to any viable competition from rail freight in the case of international freight movements and would throw a spanner in the works of all uk-euro rail freight operations.

Which the removal of all road transport from the tunnel service onto the ferries would help,as I’ve said, simply because the lost revenues would need to be made up from somewhere which in this case would probably be extra tunnel charges put onto uk-euro rail freight operations which could only help the competitiveness of road transport v rail. :bulb:

I think the flip flop wearers are more of a problem for Western European hauliers than Thomas the tank engine.

that must have been before you fell off your bicycle then

and as for the slow service on a friday, every weekend, they close one of the tunnels for maintenance and, as such, have to operate a reduced service, they usually close it at 10pm on friday and saturday nights

It’s a no-brainer! Stop using the Chunnel for freight and only use the ferries! Even for a short period Chunnel should notice a fall in its revenues!

But then there are the French! Eh Kev! :grimacing: Blockading the ports! :unamused:

i think that may be the problem, trying to force customers onto the myferrylink boats.

correct

wasnt the carraige that caused the problem was the knobhead that had not sucured the front of his sliding roof properly.

Wasn`t a sliding roof it was a Bulker with a Roll-over sheeting system.

Swap-bodies of all descriptions (Tilt`s Taut-liners and even sheet-ed Flats) have been sent through the tunnel since it opened and the tunnel operators know of the problems of loose sheets and as such make checks at the rail terminals and although problems have occurred they are relatively few and far between. Eurotunnel did nothing about checking and testing these roofless wagons before putting them into service and bar checking you had caps on your fuel tanks no vehicle safety checks were really carried out.
