Change Pedestrian Crossings

My petition:

Change Pedestrian Crossings

Sitting at red lights on Pedestrian crossings when the pedestrian has pushed the button ,without looking , and already crossed is a waste of drivers time. I propose having a button which needs to be held until the lights change and if not held cancels the light activation…

Pmsl is it April 1st or summit

See Puffin crossing - Wikipedia

After a request to cross (by button press) a kerb side detector monitors the pedestrian’s presence at the crossing. Should the pedestrian cross prematurely, walk away from the crossing, or wait outside the detection area, the pedestrian’s request to cross could be automatically cancelled. This is so traffic is not halted unnecessarily

As and when older pelicans are upgraded, this ‘problem’ goes away. I think the size of the problem and size of the suggested solution are in different universes anyway.

What about an old granny riddled with arthritis or a mum with bags of shopping in one arm and a child on the other?
You’d have to stop if they waited to cross so what’s such a drama about having to stop if they’re not there?

I would rather see one to make traffic lights part time where that was reasonable. The ones on the roundabout at J25 on the M40 drive me mad.

Are drivers on such a tight schedule while driving in towns that a one minute stop at a light controlled pedestrian crossing is causing problems with deliveries or am I just glad to be out of the game and now living in the real world ?

Well I see someones in a good mood…

I always thought a match stick worked well

Try driving through the centre of Hull at 3am. All the traffic lights are on timers. You end up sitting at each red light whilst no-one comes from the opposite direction!

according to my son who does nights the a6 into stockport is the same set up . the idiots on the councils think that if they ■■■■ us off enough we will all go away .

Being incredibly cynical, I believe it is an attempt to increase air pollution in cities. This would then give the authorities cause to ban all vehicles (except buses of course) from our town and city centres.
Now, where did I put my tin foil hat?

The same question arises when some block lane 2 for miles by overtaking with a margin of 0.1 mph

I’ve heard off a few people and read somewhere else that they set all the traffic lights up in London to actually cause congestion so they could bring the congestion charge in. Once it was set up the traffic light timers were reset so the centre would not be as congested and they started raking the money in :unamused: Don’t know if it’s true or not but knowing the powers that be I’ve a feeling it could be.

The amount of time wasted by vehicles and drivers (accidents etc.) far outweighs time spent sitting at a pedestrian crossing.
Pedestrians safety must come first always.
I say let’s have petition to stop drivers driving like morons and having accidents.

Call me picky if you like - but the last time I used the M40 the junction numbers only went as far as J17…

same on the A62 from the M60 into manchester city center speed limit 30mph lights set to allow traffic to flow at 40mph so you have to speed to hit all the lights on green
and your right about causing congestion with new road layouts Ashton old road Audenshaw out side the new morrisons formerly left turn lane strait on lane and right turn lane now left turn lane but at end of bus lane so access limited, cycle lane and strat on right turn lane in one . so formerly two lane road is down to one apart from the empty bus lane the end of which is a strait right turn lane that causes huge ques behind

I can see where your coming from with this.
back in 2003 I had a young girl run at the crossing and hit the button but continue running out into the road she was looking the other direction, she ran straight out in front of me and died at the scene.
I am not sure that if she was instilled/trained (green cross code style) to stop and hold the button that may have saved her life.
who knows.

It hit me a couple of years after the event but I am stronger for it now and try and make some good of it by trying to help other drivers.
Not many drivers get help from anyone when involved in unblameworthy accidents such as that, there is nothing set up to help them.
