CD player maybe?

Sitting in the canteen the other day and one of the drivers mentioned that he had never driven a lorry that did not have a CD player fitted.

This led to a big discussion about modern lorries and all the creature comforts that they have fitted… and this led on to the big question:- If you took all the driving aids off a modern lorry so that it was, driver wise, akin to a 60’s lorry… what is the ONE thing that you would fight tooth and nail to keep??

Air con

Radio, …didn’t even have to think about it.
I’ve driven a 70s regd British truck with 60s technology in the 80s, so that is what I base my opinion on.
It was the only thing that made it bearable among the crash (or constant mesh) gearbox, Quasimodo esque driving position, air operated wipers, bang it down windows, and no power steering, night heater…or in fact bunk.

yep, radio, a day without popmaster is unthinkable…

Have to be honest, a radio was not the first thing that sprang to mind… in fact, it never crossed my mind at all! I could not decide between Air Suspension (Leaf springs! The horror) (I know, I have become such a wuss in my old age) … and Air Brakes that actually allow you to stop and don’t fade!

I’m now used to total crap suspension…I drive a Actros ffs !
The only time in my old Atki that I had to be running fast enough to rely on the air brakes was when I knocked it out of stick going down hill (actually standing up and hanging on for dear life) going downhill passing everything, then realising I needed to slow down for, or worse stop at the bottom. :open_mouth:

power steering, air con and a heater.
i never listen to the radio in the uk and seldom anywhere else do i need to hear it as its nothing but irritating drivvle for my ears.
its slightly bearable abroad as ive no idea what theyre jabbering about but the speech format the way they talk is enough to have me reaching for the button smartly.

Radio is the only thing that relieves the monotony in the job for me.
How can you say that ALL radio is crap, it a bit like saying all English food is crap for example, some is some isn’t…you must have some specific interest DD that you can indulge in on radio.
All genres of music, talkradio that specifies in sport, current affairs, news, and specialised radio programmes.
My preference is music and sport, so I just flick through different channels and stations to I find what I want.
Sat all day in total silence would top me over the edge.

Radio is the first thing i check. Traffic updates make it easier to avoid jams on a Friday.

I-shift.
Didnt even have to think about that one . It just does what it says and gets on with it leaving you one less thing to think about .

The accelrator pedal. Flat to the mat. Take the brake pedals and wing mirrors off.

If its a Stobart unit the last point might have been done for you already

Radio definitely !

sorry,not for me.
ive no interest in direct media news, sport, current affairs,( covid 24/7 hysteria),and i find that i cant stand the banal self importance of whatever dj is clattering on about as they assume everyone is interested as to what their last dump consisted of.
i cant stand the faceache type snowflake lemming retards on the phone in programs and although years ago i used to listen to radio 4 as it was the mostly only voice i could hear in a conversation then ive since had that avenue of enjoyment removed as its just mustnt upset muslim propaganda spouted nowadays.
i get more than enough world info from reading the ramblings and various links on here.
i dont care who is prime minister or anything to do with live tv or the media in general,i just skip over to it from stuff posted here.
ive not bought a newspaper for probably 40 years or so as its only last years news regurgitated with different names.
ive a cpl of sd cards and usb sticks with all the music and movies plus a 2tb laptop with all the sounds or films i ever want to listen to and most important of all with all the tv programs and movies ive pirated its NO ADVERTS which have to be the most insulting assumption on any normal persons intelligence whatsoever.
im happy in my own dinosaur racist bigoted world that i try not to change, hence moving 14 years ago to northern ireland suits me fine as in reality its 1980 here in most aspects to the extent that they still carry out operations here using whiskey…

unless its an overnight at a recognised flesh pit ( now mostly extinct in the uk as theyre all junkies or foreign thieving skanks) though refreshingly the rest of europe is somewhat different then im happy in a quiet off the beaten track hideyhole and nowhere near a weatherspoons scenario for a cpl pints and the (perish the thought big screen sky tv).
id rather have bought,or made my own tea,and then chill with movies or whatever.
im not a social animal in normal respects but no offence to those that are.
each to their own.

I’d fight for more than one thing!
Power steering. Some gaffers allegedly were against it because drivers would.wear out front tyres quicker.
Air brakes as opposed to vacuum brakes.
Decent heater.
A bunk.
Night heater.
.
The above are pretty much all necessary I reckon.
Then comes the comforts:
Air seat, radio or whatever, heated mirrors, air suspension, electric windows, electric screen wipers.

The 1960’s were a long time ago.

got to agree here .Take the radio but leave me the blutooth connection to the headunit so I can hook up the phone and send the tunes from Deezer to the truck speakers . Radio wether it be DAB or the “oldstyle” AM /FM seem to be full of dj idiots full of their own self importance .
Self cooking at home , portioned up and frozen to reheat in the microwave . My own tv and firestick so I can watch a film thank you very much .I didn’t get into this job for the social side of things - I like my own company and the ability to do my own thing and not having to interact with a lot of people I neither know nor care about .
