CB's, what happened to them?

I remember my Grandad telling me stories about the days when he used to take building supplies into London and how he’d ask drivers for directions etc over the CB. He said he upgraded his CB so it had a radius of abut 400 miles (not sure if this was true or if he was messing with me at my young age). What ever happened to the CB radio? I see tippers still using them but everyone else doesn’t have them anymore.

probably fleet motors on lease won’t allow the installation of same

probably cos our illustrious government f****d it up by insisting we went onto AM…
then every muppet in the country got one and started playing music over the airwaves,
not worth bothering now unless we all went illegal and back on AM.
best mileage i could get on the old AM was from Beattock to Penrith… (56 miles according to Google )
Mine was uprated and so was the “Ham” homebase that “Skippy” used to use with a Thunderpole on her chimney stack.

probably struggle to find enough people speaking English to make worthwhile!!

Still have one quite a lot off tippers and rubbish bulkers still use them in london

I was parked in Lisbon Portugal and could a very clear conversation between two American truckers in the USA.Not a wind up.

Mobile phones and Sat Navs happens to them.

I’ve still got one in my car!

I remember using C.B. when driving lead car for a cycle race.I was on a fairly high clear road in Perthshire and could talk to people at the Isle of Man.Over longer distances they sometimes worked but most of the time they were unreliable.

I think you mean FM…

But it had more to do with being allocated 27MHz. VHF would have been far better as it doesn’t suffer from the interference HF does.

ive got them fitted in ours best ive done is irun spain to cornwall

Still a handy piece of kit.

You’ll find most agri contractors and the big Arable farms use them, silage teams tends to restrict use to the trailer guys so they don’t meet head on narrow lanes, other team members if thing go wrong or to organise a break. Different teams in the same area use different frequencies.

Thank ■■■■ they’ve lost their appeal and we no longer get Dukes of Hazard/Smokey and the Bandit wannabes cluttering up the airwaves with “breaker, breaker c’mon y’all…” :imp:

That is so bloody true.

I’ve still got one. Bit of a waste of time tbh. You either get that Russian bint over every channel all day or else you get council house FM playing tunes. They’re ok if you’re running with a mate though.this is mine.

10.4 good buddy :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

Hiya…stupid single mothers f…d up the CB s they’d put a rubber band round the mike switch
and transmit a squawking kid over the airways for hour after hour. in any big town or city thats
what you got. some of the rigs was tweaked so they could transmit for miles.they was a useful
bit of kit in there day
John
