Cb radios

Just found my truck has aerial and power cables for what I can only guess was a cb. Do truckers still use them? If so are they used in the same way as they were many years ago on a open frequency or are just used for truckers from the same company to talk To each other?

Cb is open frequency. 40 channels to choose from. Although EU and uk channels are different. Still quite popular, although less truckers and more morons.

Can never understand why it’s not illegal to talk on a cb nowadays while holding the mike. And holding a phone is.Or is it now?

It isn’t illegal but I’m sure that if you had an accident while using one you could be done under careless driving, but then if you are on the CB then you should be getting a heads up as to where the police are and so shouldn’t be caught

Do lorry drivers even still use them the only people I know who use them nowadays are farmers

They were pretty much essential for the tipper job, for loading as a lot of plant operators used the CB, finding works access points on Motorways, letting your pal know that you had tipped and it was his turn etc and chatting to your running partner to while away a long day! That was back in the day when driver’s chatted to one another of course, however we always dropped the mike if any smokies were about.

Pete.

CB,s don’t count, it’s all down to the frequency they are on.

if they made it illegal it would mean the police cant use there mics while driving

It would be very difficult to prove someone was using a cb whilst driving, unlike phones no records of usage are kept

True enough. But I’m sure it’s one law for them. And one for us.lol…Do they still use mics in this day and age?.Mostly see them in pairs anyway. So the one driving would’nt be using the mic.

It would. But with them sneaking about in solo units video you. There would be no defence.

I asked A copper this as they use them, he said it’s because your not engrossed in a full conversation, that’s how they get away with using them

Fair enough then.I have’nt used one since the early nineties.Although a few of our lads have them.

Almost all trucks in North America have them but like has been said earlier, too many morons. Its the same thing as in the UK, other drivers would rather get on the CB and offer criticism and abuse to others as opposed to helping. Plus the range on most of the standard fitted units is pretty dire, more than a couple of truck lengths away from the guy you’re talking to and you often have issues. I’m sure if you know what you’re doing you can buy better aerials and tune them properly to increase range but given what I’ve said above, there’s not really much point unless you often travel with colleagues and mates and want to chat.

They are worth their weight in gold. Get warnings on speed cameras, heavies check points and most importantly when there are accidents-they’ve saved me heaps of time because I was able to avoid traffic jams or accident blocked roads.
