Caught speeding

Had a NIP through from Nottinghamshire Police today for 59 in a 50

One of them, I obviously didn’t pull it back. Didn’t even see the van. My fault entirely.

But no points, never been done before so what can I expect? Tda and biscuits with the traffic commissioner? Would they even be bothered over one minor transgression?

Do they still do speed awareness courses ? If not 3 points and £100 fine you naughty boy

They may ask you why you could do 59 in a supposedlly 56 limited truck, or were you rolling down hill.

Yes, they still do speed awareness courses - although under the current Coronavirus restrictions they are done remotely via online video conferencing.

A few years ago (when HGVs were subject to 40mph limits on single carriageways) I managed to get caught by the same camera (A5 near the MIRA site at Hinckley) three times in a week at 46-47mph! My employer at the time (a well-known large logistics outfit) were good enough to delay return of the second and third NIPs to give me time to get offered a course for the first one before they processed the others. They also went through a formal interview/warning process which was fully documented and seemed to satisfy the TC as I never heard anything further from that direction. At the time I already had 3 points on my licence from a traffic light camera almost three years earlier. Those are the only points or convictions I have ever had, but to say I was “a bit worried” at the time would be an understatement!

Yes, A610 just off M1 heading to Ilkeston

If that happened to you up here in the Socialist Republic of Nicola-land, firstly we’re still in the 1950’s so it’s still 40 for hgvs, 59 would mean a trip to court. Secondly, after your dealt with by the court, you’d be called up to Edinburgh to see the TC who will suspend your licence for as long as she wishes. Good old double jeopardy. And btw we don’t even get the chance of a speed awareness course.
And they wonder why there’s a driver shortage

You should be jailed for 10 years and never be allowed to drive again.

I think so too

A few days ago I mentioned jacking it in come May because its not worth the risk for the reward we get in terms of pay comparative to other jobs. Yes I earn good money but just take this one incident… I’ve got a fine and 3 points or a course to sit, then I’ll probably get a discipline at work (because they’ve got to show something) and there’s a potential to have a visit to the TC for further punishment so there’s a chance of getting three punishments for one event.

I get as a professional were held to higher standards, but we’ve mostly already paid thousands for a licence and have to maintain a CPC sometimes at own cost to uphold it.

The “good money” involves slinging a week and a half worth of hours in to get that so its only volume of hours which makes it good money, you never know when you start, when you finish or even if you’ll be home.

For maybe a quid or so more than working jn a warehouse? Fantastic isn’t it. Rant over

Sounds like its time for you to invest in some cheap satnav data technology to warn you in advance of speed camera locations.
Many mainstream satnavs have these data files but many people don`t regularly update them, so if you have a satnav I suggest you take the time and update it regularly.
PocketGPS world have a subscription based app that is updated weekly and includes many camera locations that aren’t on other devices, and they also have downloadable files for subscribers that you can load onto certain brands of satnav pocketgpsworld.com/modules. … er=SideBar

Things have maybe changed then, I got busted for doing 59 mph on on the A75 pre limiter days instant 3 points and £60 fine, copper said if ya get pulled doing 60 plus, which I was prior to him pulling me, it’s straight into Dumfries court, and if its night time, it’s into court first thing in the morning, which was down to the tangs giving false details to them and truck and driver would never venture into Scotland again, allegedly.

Points and fine no speed awareness course as you were doing 59mph. 57 max and you may have got a speed awareness course (10% +2mph guidance optional) but at 59 I’d highly doubt any chance of a S.A.C.

Regular haunt on that stretch of dual carriageway for camera vans during the day time.

If this is just a one off for you and you do not do this regularly then learn from it and move on
If you do it regularly then perhaps you need to re-assess your driving :bulb:

Guidance suggests that courses are offered for speeding of 10% + 9mph over posted limit so I should fall into it but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

This is why you should only drive at 47.5mph.

The trouble these days is the big logistic co’s seem to want to nail you down as well as the law enforcement for said event, everyone makes a mistake and moves on so can’t understand why the company needs to go down investigation route too, you’ve done wrong it’s been dealt with, end of,I know they have to be seen to do something but I think a lot of them relish on coming down hard on the employees.
We were under threat of redundancy a couple of month back(got called off) a few started looking around for something just in case and a well known operator with driver facing cameras were advertising,a few guys mentioned it,wasn’t happening with me,sick of all the corporate bullshine that comes with the job nowadays,And Companies can’t understand why they struggle for drivers…

If you haven’t had one within the last few years you will hopefully be offered a course, be prompt in arranging the online course if you do because there arn’t that many free spaces and you have to complete the course (its only about 4 hours online with a break half way through) within a certain time frame or the course offer is withdrawn and yoy get awarded points.

Not certain about the timeframes involved so pay attention to the wording if and when the offer arrives, only reason i have any knowledge is because the good lady J had to do one recently, it’s not that boring either and some useful pointers all of us can learn from.

No offence committed as such if course completed, don’t need to tell your insurer either so well worth doing the course if you get the chance.

Haven’t seen the guidance of 10% +9mph, most forced have operate under the guidance I posted but again that is not set in concrete. You can be prosecuted for being just 1mph over a speed limit if they so wish. It is just guidance after all.

Having said that you may be lucky and get a S. A. C however they also hold HGV drivers to a much higher standard so you may find the penalty will be harsher than if you were driving a car.

You will just have to wait and see what happens I guess.

But again the guidance is just that it does not mean a S. A. C will be offered to you.

Not entirely true, some insurance companies will specifically ask if you have been on a S. A. C within the last 5 years the same as they do for points. So it’s best to check carefully if they ask that specific question. Otherwise insurance could be null and void in the event of an accident.

Although I think you will find you are still supposed to declare any S. A. C to your insurance. After all you have committed an offence of spending, you have been caught and punished by being made to take an education course.
