Lol  He said after the first drive: “it’s nice to see you’ve still got it.” so by that I think he meant still in training mode as I wasn’t pulled up for mirrors on the first drive but I think because I was nervous I was making sure I was doing everything right and as I started to relax a bit some stuff went out the window but as you know that’s what happens on training.

Sam

Sorry Sam, totally confused, thought you had your test today and have been waiting to see how you did :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: I’ll be reading your daily report though and still crossing fingers and wishing you luck. Just to go of topic (sorry) if you get the time can you read my post as you are one of the people I was hoping for a response from because of your bin/agency dilema.

Yes, I’ve dropped you a reply in your thread.

Thanks Sam, I think you must have been writing on my thread at the same time that I was writing the above cos it was there as soon as I looked. Bloody good point too. Cheers
Rich

Good luck Lord Millar. One would like to wish one good luck for one’s test and one hopes it all goes swimmingly. Tally ho.

Day 2:

Morning drive was quite good, just taking left hand turns a little too wide but that’s nothing too major and nothing that can’t be sorted before test on Friday. He never mentioned anything about my mirrors today as I practically might as well of set up camp in them for the day because I was never out of them

I felt like my afternoon drive wasn’t the best but he didn’t seem to think so, possibly being a bit too harsh on myself.

We also did coupling and uncoupling which wasn’t much of a problem other than forgetting which order to do it all in at one point. Some people go by ‘BLACK’ I think but he said he went by 1-5 and that’s what worked for him.

Parking brake on trailer, lower landing legs, number plates, suzies and then finally pull the pin.

(Is that the correct order?!)

Me and the other student are having massive problems with when to stop ‘in the box’ in the reverse. Surprisingly, it’s not getting it in the box that’s the problem but he told us to stop when the mud guard gets to the line, we’re both doing this but just for the life of us can’t seem to get it right, most of the time we’re stopping too far away from the hatched marking (I say too far but we tend to stop on the first yellow line). Will need to get this sorted as soon as possible as it’s beginning to annoy me - never had this problem in the rigid and stopping when the guard got to the line.

Doing mock tests tomorrow but he said that he’s very impressed with both of us, hopefully the afternoon today that I felt never went too great will be the only dip in the training and it’s only onwards and upwards from here.

Why are you messing about with the number plate? Nothing at all to do with the test. In the real world, take the plate off any time you like - I do it first so I don’t forget. Apart from that, order makes sense and is correct.

The issue with the final stop position is so easy to solve it’s silly. Just put the truck in the right place over the box. Get in the cab, sit normally (no stretching or bending) and see how it looks in either of your mirrors. But don’t mix the mirrors - common mistake. So eg if you’re stopping with the illusion being that the mudguard is just on the front of the box and that’s too short, go back what appears to be another 3 or 4 inches and that will be about 12 inches in reality.

1 minute job to sort it. All the best, Pete

Sounds easy in theory but what also doesn’t help is the fact that most of the time the ground is wet and right now at this time of the year the sun is right behind the barrier. The yellow line could also be doing with getting painted but I can’t blame that as it hasn’t deteriorated since passing Class 2

I’ve had problems lining up the trailer onto the hatch marking in the box also. Managed to get it bang on on test though. Must have been sheer luck lol.

Lining up isn’t my problem it’s knowing when to stop. I can get it over and in the box fine but all the reference points i’ve been told to use of when to stop don’t work for me :frowning: Never had a problem with the rigid reverse using the mud guards though. :frowning:

Find your own reference points. All trainers have “stock” markers which work for maybe 85 - 90% of candidates. Simply get the trailer to the correct position and look in ONE mirror to find the reference point. There will be one, just a matter of finding it.

The sun on a wet surface can make life tricky though we don’t suffer with this as we use a reference point by the front wheel of the truck. But we can only do that because we train and test on the same bit of concrete. But never any problems.

Don’t make a big deal out of it (I don’t think you are) and just have a look tomorrow.

All the best, Pete

Use the tree on the left Sam, that was my saviour lol

if you`re struggling to stop in the box,aim to stop a little short rather than too far,you can then get out and check…if your a foot short get back in and go back another foot.
just remember to put the hand brake on and switch the engine off.

i think it may count as a shunt though  better check with your instructor first :bulb:

I got a little hung up on the reversing when i was going through the mill 3 weeks ago. You will find your own ref point and it will be so easy after that :bulb: :bulb: . Just let yourself relax and it will happen  .

Good luck with the rest of your C+E and keep up the diary’s.

It’s not a shunt as that means going forwards. So there is no penalty. Local rules govern whether or not you need to stop the engine - but not normally required.

Pete

And you can only check once?

Sam Millar:
And you can only check once?

Yes
