Peter Smythe:

Volvo FM12 and has an 8 speed splitter gearbox.

Please don’t think I’m being picky, but it will be a range change box - not a splitter. Important for newbies to understand the difference. Ironically many experienced drivers refer to them incorrectly as well.

Ref the length of the trailer - the whole outfit only has to make 14.5 metre for a test. Would be interested to know the overall length of that outfit as it looks very suitable.

Good luck with it, Pete

Just for the purpose of clarification Peter, having looked at their website they claim this outfit has an overall length of 14.2 metres and complies with the new requirements of the test. This differs from your statement so can you clear this one up?

Ah brings back memories lol I done my class 1 there as well really good trainers they have good luck with it m8

Easy - - I’m wrong!! It’s 14 metres to meet the regs for CE. Clearly the memory aint what it used to be and also points out the dangers of posting stuff without checking I’m up to date! I think maybe my artic was 14.5 and that’s where I’ve gone wrong.

Don’t think it’s caused any problem but sorry anyway.

Good luck all, Pete

Don’t worry Pete, I’m all too familiar with “senior moments”!

I bought the Astra when it was new and unregistered in June last year so not particularly, haha. Did have the Focus RS (new one) but couldn’t afford to keep it.

Good luck with your C+E mate.

Day 1:

First off, we had a demonstration drive by the instructor which I expected from my Class 2 training. Along the way he told us what sort of things to look out for, car drivers that don’t understand the room needed for an artic to maneuver. Trailer cutting in etc. After that it was off to the seaside to play about in the car park with reversing, he explained to us obviously that to go right you need left hand and vice versa and when you wanted to catch the trailer you steer to the mirror that there’s too much of it in. (think that’s the correct way round).

Me and the other fella both had a few goes, mostly all successful and then after that it was first drive which I had. I loved the experience, didn’t find it that hard at all in actual fact I found it quite easy and very relaxing dare I say it. I thought I may experience some issues with the gears having not used a manual since passing my Class 2 as all my Class 2 work has been auto. Also the height of the cab I thought I may experience some issues with as being on the bins, you have a low cab so I wouldn’t be used to the view point.

At break he said that he was very impressed with the first drive and there were no issues to pick up on but during the second drive he said that I seem to be very lazy in my left mirror and I take a notion to checking it but then it disappears again. One other point he picked up on was my positioning due to the fact I was about to take two lanes on entry to a r/about but only needed one and by the time he said I only needed the right hand lane, it was too late and my trailer was still half in the left lane.

Think the other fella that was with us liked to put the ■■■■■ in me as he was easily bullied into the side by passing cars and lorries :open_mouth: came close to the verge a few times but he too was just learning obviously and soon sorted his problems.

Had a go at the reverse in the new area, didn’t do too badly for it only being Monday but where instructor was telling us to line the mud guard up with wasn’t working for me and my seating position so I need to work on finding a new point of reference to stop at the barrier.

All in all a very good first day but have a feeling all ■■■■ will hit the fan tomorrow and will probably forget everything  doing coupling and uncoupling tomorrow.

Total Driving Time: 3.5hrs

Passed you in Crosshouse with the 12T at the lights today fella, noticed it wasn`t Gary that was teaching you. That guy gave me my assessment though and he did seem alright (ten hut  )

Glad you had a great first day and the weather was ■■■■ fine too :sunglasses:

Off to N.Ireland tomorrow so unlikely to cross paths `til Wednesday again, keep the head down and best of luck for tomorrow

Did you wave or flash at all and was it me driving? I was wearing the hi-vis jacket and the other fella was in blue. Quite a few flashes today so god knows who recognized us haha. Yeah the weather was awesome. Have a good one in NI and hopefully see you during the week. What am I looking out for again?
