Niced photos Norm, I presume that’s the Viking 6 which was later renamed the Sally Sun?

When we came back on this boat, it was a force 11 gale, we was 4hours late getting in, I was a sleep in my cabin, never felt a thing ha ha ha, I could have gone to a watery grave, and still kept on sleeping.

If it’s the same ship that used to be on the Ramsgate-Dunkirk crossing in the late 1980s- and I’m sure it is- then I have been on it literally dozens of times.

They chopped it in half and welded an extra section in to lengthen it and she never floated properly after that.

Oheer it’s a good job elf and safety are not watching!!! white socks and SANDALS!!! you could get locked up for a long time for that ,good pics though and thanks derek

Harry you are dead correct, I think it was taken 84 to 86, no it was 84, my daughter was 14, she came with my wife, she did not sleep, she told me the safe in the reception, was slamming against one wall to the other, people were sick all over the place, and they could not get back to the cabin, where I was a sleep. When carlsberg took over the contract from Bass, who’s deliveries was in kegs, a cool room was built under the vehicle deck, 8 stainless steel tanks was fitted and inside, was bags which we filled with beer, which went to all the bars, this started in the 80’s and continued till Wincanton lost itin the 2000’s when they ran the contract for Carlsberg. We had a rigid on the job ,when the wind was against us we had a job to do 40 mph, many of you old truckers must have been stuck behind us, going and back to Harwich from Northampton. Also we used to stop at Alconbury truck stop.

most of you carlsberg drivers would only go at 40mph anyway, that’s when you had 23 & 2500 daf’s running back empty, then you would park up half hour from home on a dodgy.

Hi steve, you cheeky chappy, do not think your safe in Canada, just down the road from you, in florida is a ex- carlsberg driver, he is from cork, I sent him some pictures, what do you mean half hour from Northampton, I have parked up at the red house pub, when it was on a layby, and we never drove 40mph, on the motorway, we used to pull off on to the A5, so we would get held up in traffic, then pull back on at junction 18, then we only had enough time to pull in Watford Gap ha ha ha. bye Sandman Norman

Did you run up to the Carlsberg Depot in Goole Norman?

I knew several of the lads who worked on the yard loading the trucks. I think they were running Commers and later Dodge. It must have closed around 1980 I think

My mate got a nice job subbing for them with a ERF with a 5 cylinder Gardner 100.

Yes my old mucker, more time than I can mention, it was there and down inTopsham, where carlsberg first came into england, before they built the brewery at Northampton , in 1975

Wheelnut, this is what happened,in the 80’s they decided to open a new depot at stafford, some of the drivers at goole moved home to work at this depot, the others got a good pay off,I remember the chap on the big fork lift, had about twenty odd years in also the forman, they got thousands. The ones who staid, got shalfed, for stafford only kept going for ten years, when they linked up with Allied brewery, they only got a small payment, they did not need stafford , for Burton took deliveries over. Reguards Sandman Norman

I remember Mac Gardham and his brother Paul worked there.

The Bovill Brothers worked in the yard.

Paul and Don Waterhouse moved to Northampton.

There were a lot more who lived close to me. I occasionally see Bo when I travel back home.

Wheelnut, your sign, used to bea steam engine, I know because I was on the railway when I was 14 years old, just 500 yards from the old brewery, where Carlsberg was built, when I was two years old I lived in Bridge st, till 23. As for names, I only remember the ones I worked with for 22years, Ones at wiillesden, goole, and topsham, have faded from my mind, but I am 72 next year, but they will remember me, because I had a plastic name on my windowscreen, " Curlytop", it’s even on a photo of my DAF, they could tell you tails about me, ha ha ha I was a lad in my younger days, enough said, i might hang myself.

Indeed it did, not only did it used to be a steam engine, it still is. In fact it was only through a fluke that the fastest trip recorded by a steam engine was by its sister Mallard rather than the Sir Nigel Gresley or 60007 as it is known by it’s friends

This picture was taken in Grosmont in September 2008 and the Sir Nigel Gresley will be back in steam for a repositioning in February in readiness for the Festival of Steam in March. I have an interest in steam going back to my small boy days. The pub Sir Nigel Gresley is about 4 miles from my house near Swadlincote. Castle gresley and church gresley are on my doorstep so the brass nameplate is quite apt really.

It is very warm in here, let me take my anorak off now :stuck_out_tongue:

As for Carlsberg I will ask, if they remember Curlytop.

Derek Bovill (Bo) was a foreman and he is about 72 now. It is possible that I will see him this weekend in Eastrington :stuck_out_tongue:

I have seen and been on most of the famous trains,e.g. " Flying Scotsman ", the one you mentioned, which was in York, also I was on the Royal Pullman Coaches, because she had her own carriages, which she would hook up to the fastest expresses, here is a bit of information, that was not widely know, her toilet had cotten wool, to stop any sound ?. If you see the old foreman, ask him about the time I was waiting for them to finish their lunch break, so I could tip, and I had my curtains closed, to rest & keep myself busy?

Had to be done lol

That is strange, we were talking about that very same pub. The last time I was in there was the night after Princess Diana was killed. I was tipping at Yule Catto.
