Car transporters

Hi been for an interview offered 26500 on 4 on 4 off , is this about average or below I don’t think it’s very good for the job , who would do it
Thanks

Explains why the lads left that i mentioned in your other thread.

No it isn’t good for cars, but, and i’m just thinking aloud here, could you manage on the money (plus nights out or included?) for a year, get the experience you need and move on, use them for training as they intend to use you… :smiling_imp: …full pay for training?..check thats the case before signing up if you decide to.

Several other operators in that vicinity who pay more realistically… …when the time is right.

I think a few may end up doing it,I was at one of our depots the other day and loads of jobs for car transporters, also picture of one using what looked like a scania high line pulling the trailer :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :frowning: not 100% sure but thought I read they were having trailers built so any unit could pull
I fear this will be the next pea brained scheme, tip your tesco express shops then pop round the corner and pick car transporter tri up and deliver it( this can on ly end in tears).

Thanks juddian , we’ll I wasn’t to impressed when they told me the salary , didn’t ask about night out as he said probably only do one or 2 , should hVe really . To me this is nearly a standard driver rate for specialist work , true what you say about using the traing to my advantage .

Looking at what I get paid, the job Your lookig at doesnt seem too bad.I drive a 9 car transporter for a small firm,(motor auction).
Saying that though,I only work 7am to anytime between 4pm to 7pm.5 days a week,no night outs.
So not all transporter drivers are on top whack…
Always wondered what E.C.M drivers earn.just feel cheeky asking them when chatting…

Same money as normal tramping with a curtain sider apparently, that means a two tier pay system, those still driving the 11 car carriers still on their previous T’s and C’s, and the lads on the 6/7 car carriers on general haulage rates, that won’t go down well.

I was chatting to a ECM driver about 9 months ago and we discussed earnings… He was on 50k per year plus a £5k bonus that was paid after 1 year if no cars were damaged. (the 5k bonus is reduced accordingly depending on extent of any damages through the year)

50k, sounds very good.

Did his nose assume the shape of Pinocchio’s as he told you?..

He forgot to subtract the pay for the 4 nights out he does every week, and his parking fees and other expenses.

They’re decently paid and work lots of hours, but it ain’t in that league.

Ha, Ha , Ha!!!

I think its something I’d take for a while to get the training and experience and then look for somewhere else if you find you like it.

Agreed, its not great but not too bad either, the training should either be on a Plus 11 body or similar, that type of body is in general use in the wider transporter market, the training alone (hopefully paid but might be on a reduced rate which is industry norm) will cost the company £thousands and is worth very serious consideration.

E.C.M on 50k a year,I would of thought more in the region of 30k.
If You find Yourself on a 9 car trailer with a peak get some good training.(not for the faint hearted).

Think I need a ruddy pay rise…

Good point about the training being a lower rate didn’t think to ask the question at interview , will find out though don’t think I could afford it if it’s much less

I think that will be about right to be honest. Whats not said is whether its someone tramping, a day man or night man. Most of ecms transporters are 11+ from what ive seen. I dont work for them but the wage stated does sound more than fees able.

My friend has driven for ECM for ten years, we worked together twelve years ago on Eurofleet. He is away all week tramping and always home Friday lunchtime and earned over £42K last year…he says many of the other drivers hammer the POA to work longer and do earn more than him, but he doesn’t want the hours. Plus, after twenty-four weeks he has normally worked his hours so gets stood down for two weeks on £110 pd. £50K is achievable with ECM.
I have just come back into car transporters after nine years out of driving and with a small firm I am earning about £32K…looking to get back on with a big firm to earn the big bucks. My mate is putting a word in with ECM for me.
Two homes lost in two divorces, being away all week in a small cab is a small price to pay to eventually own my own home again…and no I will never get married again!!
I remember in the Seventies it was in the newspapers about Esso drivers earning £32K and what a scandal it was that a truck driver should earn the same as middle-management, so could be reasonable to believe that transporter drivers were earning £400 - £500 pw back then.

That’s like in the late 80’s when we went on strike for a week at Toleman’s. The Sun ran a front page story about “Greedy Transporter Drivers”, claiming we were all earning at least a grand a week, yeah right!. We certainly got quite a lot of unsavoury comments from members of the public when unloading outside dealers after that!

Plus or including night out money and expenses?

Best of luck going back on, you’re a braver man than me…the mere thought of it makes me shudder, all bloody wheelstrapping now…oh those poor knees… :smiling_imp:
