Not the same name at all, different spelling.

ideal height would be slightly lower than a m-way bridge

is that taxi for me ?

Surprisingly enough in the UK there is no legal maximum running height below 16’6’’ however motorway bridges must be a minimum of 16’6’’ (most new are 20’) any bridge under 16’6’ has to be sign posted, if its not and you hit it its not your fault (that I know from experience!!)

Loads over 16’6’’ are legal but need a movement order under abnormal loads regs but do not need a STGO authorised vehicle

There is a tale, decades ago, that when the M6 was first built through Chesire, one of the bridges ‘sank’ into the salt deposits, giving a clearance of only 16’3", which had to be rectified.

Perhaps our Roman invaders, at the turn of Christendom, knew more about Civil Engineering than our modern day graduates. Hence why the A5 ‘turns left’ through Staffordshire.

You’ve got to get them down to 16ft.

I’m in no way a professional at this but I love doing it every now and again. ‘Ordinary’ cars are generally easy, but when you have 4x4’s, people carriers, vans etc it gets to be fun.

When you’re in the services or see one (un)loading go talk to the guy. It’s a ■■■■ site more interesting than anything else but it’s arsetwitching seat of the pants stuff. You’ll either love it or hate it.

Stan

tbh, a transporter is 1 rig I hate being behind travelling anywhere and will do my best to get passed/away from em asap IMO theyre so unstable, and its not unusual to see em swaying from side to side. As for doing the job, i doubt theres much glamour in the job now, they have the smallest of cabs to night out in, and youd be expected to do 4+ nights per week

I did cars out of Portbury for Walon for 5 years and as I’ve stated on here before it’s the most exicting, prestigious, well paid, arse twitching, dirtiest, frustrating crappiest job I’ve ever had.

That is the only way I can describe it.

Maximum height is 16’ & we were supposed to be that or below before you were allowed to leave the yard. Sometimes you might risk running at up tp 16’ 4" but that could be a bit dodgy. That’s of course if you were sticking to motorways, if you were on A roads you has to plan you’re route accordingly to avoid any height restrictions. You would also be amazed how much damage a few low branches can cause to a top deck full of shiny new cars.

Don’t expect anything flash to drive either because you’ll be in a low spec, low height cab (which has probably been cut down a bit more) with mega miles on the clock. This is because being wagon & drags the prime mover is run into the ground before being refurbished, so milages can run into millions.

Don’t let me put you off though because if the right job came up I’d be up for doing it again.

Thank you for all the replys, its always nice to read what other people have to say abot the job, i dont think i would get any where applying at the mo as my driving experience is only limited to trunking between heathrow, gatwick and manchester airports with airfreight, getting abit bored with the job now, i like a challenge not really getting that where i am and its limited driving exp.

Neil

Been doing it for 5 weeks now and have lost 1 and a half stones!! Wasted two years in the gym and put weight on!

Very stressful at first but it is slowly getting easier. As previous poster said, you really want to be 16ft or less and that can mean having 2 inches between the decks. Its a really nice feeling when you go under the first bridge and there is no almighty crashing sound  Having sais that, the Tyne Tunnel has knocked me back on a few occasions for being high even though I had measured at 16ft dead.

The rewards can be high, but you have to work for it, we are on a mileage bonus, so it is a case of maxing out the k’s daily. Had a R Class Merc on the back today out of Hertz at Heathrow and it just fit between the bottom deck wheelarches by about a half an inch each side. Got two Merc Sprinter Chassis Cabs on the back now and they were a ■■■■■ to load as there is only about a max of an inch between the folded in mirrors and the rear pillars on the trailer, and thats before the things start losing traction and sliding!!!(another pound off!!)

Anyone here of the Transporter accident on the M6 yesterday, driver died apparently. Also, saw a box trailer on its side on the A43/M40 junction today, got pics if anybody interested.

Sounds like a really intresting job, lots to think of, how many nights out is the norm for this job i know ecm say 4 possibly 5 nights a week? did you have traning how long and whts involved in it?

Neil

Training varies enormously between companies.
ECM have you in the yard for two weeks, loading and unloading even if you come from another transporter company. My training was considerably less, I think university of life is the term. However, a very varied job, with 4 nights and sometimes five if you get stuck. I am home tonight as the work has gone quiet, but have done 2500km over the 4 days and am local tomorrow, loading for Monday.

Ive heard that its quite this time of year for this type of work, could be wrong? I dont mind traing for how ever long it is as long as i enjoy the job im doing.

Neil

Yes it is quite quiet. I have been busy Monday to Thursday, but in the yard today (Friday). Not much on for Monday by all accounts.

Hi neil_b

Just back from a week tramping on transporters.

You say you’re based in Hampshire. There was an advert in the Southampton Daily Echo on Thursday for ECM. They’re after a lot of drivers in the areas due to what sounds a large expansion in their contracts. The advert was for three different types of job:-

  • Day trunking i.e. Honda Swindon to Southampton Docks. You’ll do two runs a day, 11 Civics or 9 CRVs
  • National Tramping. 4+ nights out a week. Bearing in mind ECM have contracts with Toyota, Honda, Mercedes, VW, Audi, Renault etc you’ll be going all over the place wherever these vehicles are brought into the country
  • Holiday relief. Supposedly home most nights.

The jobs page in the Echo is repeated on Saturdays so have a look tomorrow if you’re interested. Even though you may be short on experience, you lose nothing by trying…

Only downside to ECM if you’re based in Hampshire is that they’re based in Carlisle which you’ll have to bear in mind for training, truck service etc…
