Car transporter running heights

Lank:
Hi neil_b

Just back from a week tramping on transporters.

You say you’re based in Hampshire. There was an advert in the Southampton Daily Echo on Thursday for ECM. They’re after a lot of drivers in the areas due to what sounds a large expansion in their contracts. The advert was for three different types of job:-

  • Day trunking i.e. Honda Swindon to Southampton Docks. You’ll do two runs a day, 11 Civics or 9 CRVs
  • National Tramping. 4+ nights out a week. Bearing in mind ECM have contracts with Toyota, Honda, Mercedes, VW, Audi, Renault etc you’ll be going all over the place wherever these vehicles are brought into the country
  • Holiday relief. Supposedly home most nights.

The jobs page in the Echo is repeated on Saturdays so have a look tomorrow if you’re interested. Even though you may be short on experience, you lose nothing by trying…

Only downside to ECM if you’re based in Hampshire is that they’re based in Carlisle which you’ll have to bear in mind for training, truck service etc…

Dont suppose you have the paper, for the contact name and number?

Neil

Hi Neil,

I don’t I’m afraid. I was just scanning through a mates copy when I was back in the yard on Thursday. I’m perfectly happy in my job but I always like to keep me ear to the ground to see what’s out there…

Thanks anyway ill get the paper tomorrow, and i have all the contact details on the website for ECM, i want the paper so i can refer to the ad when ringing.

Well iv’e being doing the job for about 10 weeks and yes it is twicthing time and some. i drive a s reg wagon and drag but generally only take 8 cars cos of the length of the decks etc but and its a big BUT i only have 2 levers to play with not 10 or more.only the back deck drops down to make a ramp and the loading ramp just pushes out.
all in all its not a bad job.would like bigger higher inside cab but otherwise it fine. my gaffer just says hmmm ok when i report any damage (although how long that last time will tell) i tend to be self sufficient as regards food and drink etc but use motorway showers as often as i can.
as regards to the missconception that transporter drivers are a cut above the rest ,beleive me we are not and most consider themselves as just a wagon driver but with more toiletery needs than most  in every job their will always be the best and then the ones who think!!! they are the best .
anyway i hope my job lasts and yep its just gone quite for now so im off to spain for a week, catch you all soon

There is something about this job, i really wanna have a go love a good challenge and like working hard, love to be busy and bored when quite, so ill do my best to find a company that is willing to give me a go so i can prove myself.

Keep you posted on what happens with it all.

Neil

Neil, just email ECM, they will send you an application form out straight away.

I’ve been drivingtransporters for 4 years now… I’m a transporter engineering certified trainer and now the assistant TM for a fleet of 7 car transporters… I have run at 16’2 before but I dont like it. If it’s over 16’0 it makes me nervous. I have had some of my drivers do serious damage to vehicles (including the UK’s 1st ever convertible Renault Espace) by running too high, we use the bridgeclear system in all our trucks and our drivers will measure every load using a height pole. The big problem is other truckers not giving us the room we need. I’ve moaned about this before but it still is one of our biggest problems. Car drivers aren’t bad cos we can swing right over them but we cant move if there is a trailer in front of us. This is especially annoying @ MSA’s when we have a truck on either side of us then some ■■■■ parks in front of us… Just bear in mind guys, we need a lot of extra room to get out… Please be more considerate

We run at variable heights all the time. We have been told in writing that the maxmum height we can run at is 16’3. However, I will not personally run over 16’. We are issued with a height stick and have to write on our paperwork the height of each and every load. As we are provided with the tool to measure the load, it is an instant dismissal if we hit a bridge due to not knowing the running height.

I have sent ecm an email see what happens, Another thing i used to work at heathrow airport as an aircraft push back and tow driver, consisting of moving and postioning aircraft weighing upto 400 tonnes. This was done using a tow bar which would pivot on the push back tug and where it connected to the aircraft, when towing aircraft it would be one large and long trailer and would have to be parked in places it was measure to just fit.
Could i use this experience as artic experience so to speak as it the same sort of principles but not on the public highway■■?

I should have thought knocking the wing off a Jumbo jet is a little bit more serious than knocking the wing off a Ford Mondeo.

I drove a covered transporter so if it didnt fit it didnt go :stuck_out_tongue:

I know but sometimes people dont understand and gets missed when applying for driving jobs.

Pulling & pushing an aircraft is wagon & drag, not artic.
Count the couplings

Just woundering really, When following these under motorway bridges what is the maximun height they run at when fully loaded

Neil

ideal height would be slightly lower than a m-way bridge

is that taxi for me ?

It wasn’t you on the 62 west past croft towards the pool was it last year dennis, left a lot of renaults ( i think)in the lane all driverless (best place 4 em  ) a couple of hundred yards behind the now 1/2 laden transporter

I don’t think you can get many Renaults on a rigid livestock truck. :stuck_out_tongue:
