Can't plan for altering start times

My mate left home at 9.30 a.m yesterday and arrived at work for 11 a.m ,he then finished his shift at 00.15 and then told his planner he would not be starting work until 1 p.m the next day at it would be abt 2 a.m when he got home ,shower ,cup tea in bed for 2.45 am and would need to be up for 8.30 am to get a shower ,breakfast to leave for 9.30 am to get there for 11 a.m ( 5 hrs apx sleep ) .
I thought this sounded reasonable but planner said he can’t plan for drivers changing there start times as and when it suits them ,thoughts

would say he needs a different job if in 11 hours rest he can only manage 5 hours sleep. used to work a similar drive away and never had as little as 5 hours sleep unless I reduced it.

should be able to plan to 11 hour breaks easy enough mind.

He wants to learn to shower and eat/drink a bit quicker.

45 mins for all that at night and then an hour the next day, must be some shower routine he has

dozy:
finished his shift at 00.15 … would be abt 2 a.m when he got home

Needs a job closer to home

And … why would he need 2 showers in the space of six hours, one a week is good enough for anyone

There was a reason domestic regs limited you to 11hrs a day and that’s because unless you live on the doorstep of work its not possible to travel home, get a decent amount of time at home to have your tea, have a bit of wind down time, get a bath, have breakfast and get ready for work, travel to work and still get 8hrs kip in there somewhere in less than 13.

why anyone would travel 90 mins each way on day work is beyond me .

For all the ribbing they get that’s one thing I liked about being at a certain large reefer haulier known for its foreign workforce (narrows it down doesn’t it  ). They were quite flexible to an extent about what time you started within reason. Mainly because they had a large amount of blokes turning up all times. Downside was you had to wait for a job. The money wasn’t great but decent place to work atmosphere wise and they never tried to send you out with damaged tackle and they rarely pushed you to pound of flesh every single day. You realise this when you move to other places! Swings and roundabouts.

There’s clearly more traffic about at 1am in the morning ,that’s why it takes longer to get home than it does to get to work in rush hour :open_mouth:

I can’t get my head around anybody starting work late morning, then doing a 12+ shift into the early hours of tomorrow. They are horrendous shifts. Especially if you have a lengthy commute.

At what point do you see any family/the missus or do anything outside of work during the working week? May as well tramp & earn more whilst saving £££ on petrol, surely?

Its not the Planners problem as to where a Driver lives,or how long it takes him /her to commute, its the Drivers problem.
If commuting is a problem then the Driver needs to have a re-think on his employment

I’d understand refusing to reduce, but not demanding more than 11hrs off, as others have said, if 11hrs isn’t enough that’s the drivers problem, not the offices.

But, this is a ‘Dozy’ thread, so probably 100% ■■■■■■■■ anyway

But he’s not demanding more than 11 hrs off ,he saying he’s having 8 hrs sleep if he gets in bed at 2.45 a.m ,then gets up at 8.30 am so he can leave for work at 9.30 am hrs only getting apx 5 1/2 hrs sleep
and as for its not the offices problem ,who employed him ,knowing where he lived :exclamation: :exclamation:

Or you could say they shouldn’t of employed him in the first place knowing where he lived ,and distance ,time involved in commuting there

Spot on Connor ,it should be taken into consideration where a driver lives in relation to where he work, especially when the company employed him knowing he lived 1 1/2 hrs from his workplace ,different if he had moved 1 1/2 hrs away from workplace when already employed .
And yes his argument is over sleep ,getting 8 hrs ,not whether he has 11 hrs off ,12 hrs etc

But out of the 11 hrs he has off ,3 hrs apx is commuting time ,leaving him 8 hrs in which to shower ,eat ,do a few chores ,that’s his point he can’t get in 8 hrs sleep ,which is what you should be doing if your going to stay healthy .

Finish at 0015 - refuses to start at 11am as it’s not enough time, says he’ll be in at 1pm - correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s 12hrs 45mins off.
Last time I checked, which was when I was a kid, but 12hrs 45mins was more than 11hrs

Buy him a Bongo Friendee van so he can sleep in the yard.
