Can you remove paint off the wheels of your unit to shine em

May sound sad(tin hat well and firmly ON :grimacing:) but I was polishing in my diesel tank this afternoon and looking at the dull grey colour on my wheels and wondered if it is possible to remove the paint(I am only assuming its paint) so I can be one of those saddo’s on the road with really shiny looking wheels  I havent got the spare money to be paying out over £100 to buy the shiny hubs for them nor the time to nip to the tyre fitters and have them change them so if nothing can be done I will just leave it. Also while im here any one know how to get rid of the salt marks on my tank? I have a nice shine on it but it is not yet mirror like as most that I see out and about are. In fairness I have not spent that long on it maybe 3 hours with a a mixture of autosol and peak and im quite pleased with just how much better it can look with a shiny tank, well for us saddos anyway lol.

I cant help you on the wheels mate but i agree with you about polishing the tank. The tank on the Actros that we run is just the stock tank, so nothing special, but when its polished up (i think) it improves the look of the vehicle.
Just out of interest which do you think is better Peek or Autosol?
Keep up the polishing! :grimacing:

I think all you can do with the wheels, which will not be expensive is rub them down and repaint them â– â–  I you want shiney chrome wheels get ready to put some overtime in as it will be expensive.

as mentioned above, rub the rims down, buy a tin of aliminum colured paint, and paint away

i had chrome trims on my last truck an hated them, would of rather just had silver rims, with scania cover an chrome wheel nut covers looks nicer

as for polishing the tank, i used auto glym metal polish works great, then peek to keep the shine

Thanks for the info. It seems polishing them is not well liked so far lol.
How do I rub them down? I have no idea what I’m doing but keen to learn  if need be I’ll have to save for some hub caps but that will take a while while the price of em are so daft.

I reckon this is where you need to look.

Of course you cannot remove paint from wheels to make them shine. I reckon if you did the TM or boss would be entitled to have a hissy fit. You will need to ask him nicely to fit some alloy wheels or buy yourself a pimped up nova to play with.

Or take the jump to be an owner driver and paint your wheels pink if you want

SO because I would like to make my motor look nicer by polishing the wheels I should go to the job center and get another job■■? IT was a genuine enquiry thanks for your input system typical of a eDarbeh lad. Still bitter after tyson’s corner flag waving antics? Or just bitter because you weren’t given any attention as a child eh?

You can polish the wheels but you asked if you can remove the paint. I suggested if you did, you would need to find another job.

The company won’t buy us polish for tin cab or the tank so doubt they’d buy me some alloys. I was only asking a question didn’t expect to be be-littled in such a pathetic manner! I thought if possible it would give me something to do when I’ve got a few hours waiting time somewhere. Been abused today already by some scouse stobarts driver who had a go at me for polishing the tank, he said its bull ■■■■ what I was doing and I should not bother as the boss don’t give a crap bla bla bla shaking his head and tutting at me he’s lucky he was old or I wouldnt of let him get away with it!

Theres nothing wrong with having a smart truck. Its the people that drive around in â– â– â– â–  heaps that look the fools.

I would just fint some nice bright aluminium coloured paint, you can get a shine on it to some extend with some abrasive polish.

Wheels are made from steel.Paint is used to protect steel from the effects of corrosion.Corrosion is another name for rust.If you remove the paint then the wheels will rust.

Fair play to you fella, nothing wrong with keeping the motor smart when you’ve got nowt better to do. Never been that arsed myself but i’ma lazy bleeder.

To be able to polish the wheels, you need alloy wheels to start off with, which if they are painted, you don’t have and are bog standard steel wheels. You could cut them back and buy a tin of silver paint and that would look smart. Just make sure you get the right sort of steel wheel silver paint. Any spanners can tell you what sort.

Thanks for the replies, I will wait till I have a motor with alloys before attempting that one then  Will keep doing me tank though even though it is sad to a degree it still looks nice just wish I had some nice wheels to go with it ive started to get chrome envy on all the blinged up trucks I see I want one

You live there so its bad enough :stuck_out_tongue:

best thing to do is, knock rust off rims, get some alimimum coloured paint, and paint the wheels thats all you need to do

best thing would be some of that new in a spray can TARTAN PAINT would look awesome on the wheels, halfords may sell it in a spray can TARTAN PAINT

I sprayed one of the van wheels silver the other day as it was rusty and it came out as quite a nice shiny colour.Luckily It matched the other ones quite well. If i remember i will get a pic to show and the name of the spray.

IF your wheels are painted and looking a bit skanky as most do after a few journeys and not being cleaned often enough leaves them with grease stains etc, buy yourself some oven cleaner… it works great! Spray it on to the hubs and leave for an hour, then scrub off, exactly the same as you would do you oven, it will take all the crap off and should improve the look… but if the paint is all chipped or rusted you will be better stripping it off all together and re painting.

And Wheelnut, as a TM myself I would be very impressed if a driver came to me and asked if he could polish the truck up or make it look smarter, shows he cares.
