My knowledge of bluetooth would fit on the back of a postage stamp. I know those clip things that folks have in their ears is bluetooth and I’m thinking of getting one, as my hands free is my phone in my jeans pocket and a wire going inside my tee shirt, clip on the collar and earpieces. All goes awry when getting in and out the cab though as wires tug and pull out etc.
OK to the point, I can get the earpiece thingey for £7 delivered off fleabay and I know my smartphone has bluetooth capability so am sorted to the stage… Looking at my satnav earlier I also noticed that has bluetooth? Also many cars and some trucks I believe have bluetooth, this is where I start to get real confused. On my satnav bluetooth screen it shows dialling, sms, call history and phonebook icons amongst others.
I will be one hundred percent honest upfront and say I am totally clueless about bluetooth. Can one of you guys explain in very simple terms how bluetooth works and how I would use it with the satnav, or indeed what bluetooth in a vehicle is. Am sure I am not the only one out there that is in the dark.
All it is is a short range method of transferring data.
Same principles as wi-fi, but over a much shorter range.
The earpiece will pair with your phone and depending on the profile of the earpiece it will let you have a hands free for calls or may even have Audio to listen to music on your phone. The SatNav will pair to your phone for handsfree through it’s speaker, but it won’t be as clear as your earpiece (normally), it may even use the bluetooth for your traffic data on the satnav via your phone network.
Bluetooth is a method of electronic devices communicating wirelessly. So for example the Bluetooth phone function in a vehicle will communicate with your phone, which then connects the call.
Each device will need to be paired, which essentially means you allow them to communicate with each other, and prevent any other devices from interfering with the link. Hence nobody else can use your phone, or listen to your call.
Bluetooth has many uses. For example, My wife’s car has a Bluetooth function which allows her to play music through the car stereo, when the music is stored on her phone.
Sorry if I seem to have copied what you said, Steelgoon. But once I’d typed my reply into a small keyboard, I wasn’t going to delete the flaming thing…
If your sat nav Bluetooth shows call history, phonebook etc you can pair your phone to your sat nav and use that as a handsfree kit,no need for an earpiece
I am festooned with bluetooth, radio is bt, sat nav is bt and a separate system fitted to the wagon, so one for home phone one for works phone and the radio has my laptop connected for tv and movies also home phone to the radio for internet radio or my personal music
Bluethooth devices hold up various little flags to say what they can and can’t do. Some can do audio. Some can do PhoneBook lookup, some can do two way audio. Some do GPS.
So for example, I have a radio in my car that has bluetooth. So I go to my phone and tell it it “pair”. ( if you get asked for a password and you don’t know it try four zeros)
From that point onwards, every time I jump in my car, the radio looks for my phone and finds it without any action from me (assuming I left Bluetooth switched on on the phone) . When it finds it:
-it can play music stored on my phone
-if I get a phone call, it interrupts the music, and I can hear the caller through car speakers, and talk using a small microphone built into the radio
-I can make a call, using the radio to display my contact list and choose the victim
In a truck it certainly can be worthwhile having your phone paired to something, whether radio, satnav, or headset, to provide a way of hearing an incoming call or text reliably, and having a hands free way of telling the planner to [zb] off.
I’ve yet to find a comfortable earpiece For hands free and therefore prefer the ol wire and 2 earbuds + you don’t have to worry about charging the darn thing
Thanks for the input guys, it is much appreciated.
Well I managed to pair up my phone to the satnav to try it out and surprisingly it actually works. Got my partner to call me and it started ringing on the satnav, pushed a button on the satnav to answer the call and was in business
Obviously the sound quality is not as good, bit like being in a tunnel, but perfectly legible and being a 7" screen it obviously easier to view than the 3" screen on my phone. There is an auto answer and an auto connect feature on the satnav and it imports contacts from the phone etc. no problem at all. If you are using the satnav at the time, there is a button to revert to the map screen so you can still see visually where you are going whilst taking the call.
Does make you wonder why some drivers insist on using hand held phones whilst driving, with bluetooth headsets for less than a tenner and perhaps even their satnavs already having the capability to be a hands free solution. Especially where the second offence of using a mobile whilst driving, is now automatically referred to the traffic commissioner (source - govt website).

If you’re an agency driver it’s the rules that you must wear one in each ear. If you buy 2 they often come with a free limp
You forgot the grubby hi viz to drive in & the optional stained wife beater vest.
As for the Bluetooth I don’t bother with the sat nav, I just connect it through the truck Bluetooth, much clearer.
My oaf of a neighbour has got a Bluetooth earpiece which he wears while in the garden. Great he walks about shouting into thin air about his ■■■■■■■ car and who had what fights the night before. Cretin.
