Blimey there’s a good list!

Well, J G Stamper is still going isn’t he? The G A Stamper business (I know Gordon Stamper died about 1970/1) wrapped up about 3 years ago - the auction was fascinating!

Pandoro became a shadow of its former impressive self and reverted to being Ferrymasters (Ireland) - it started out in 1975 as the merger of Ferrmaster (Ireland) and Northern Ireland Trailers

Burn Brothers - you mean Burn Brothers of Barton? I think they finished a few years ago - until they did, they were still rallying a 2-stroke Foden. I once watched it coming up Shap. As I sat in a deckchair on the swan neck of my low-loader (the patio!) at the layby 100 yards from the summit, I saw it come over Huck’s Bridge and start the climb. I swear it was 20 minutes on the bank!

United Carriers (plus Robsons) vanished into NYK Logistics

Brunskill was part of CLS wasn’t it? I think they wrapped it up years ago

McKelvie vanished into TDG… Siddle C Cook into, ermmmm, was it United Transport? The Cook family, of course, since reponsible for Elddis Transport and Elddis Caravans

Aren’t Tennant still going?

And I’ve not even hit 50 yet…

siddle cook

merged with Sunters to become United Transport then Econofrieght and now ALE

the Siddle family are still in transport with the North eastern Haulier ELDDIS

Aren’t Tennant still going?

Think so. Saw a motor in their livery on Friday on the A1

Is it Tennant of Forth?

A couple more from memory. M R Clark and Brady.

I use to see a lot of local hauliers in and around Marchon but memory fails me to name them

burn bros

If thats the ones from Northallerton I think they shut down a few years ago, they used to pull out of Lackenby and Skinningrove, but when they had to stop getting the work direct and go through a main hauler (prestons) they found it hard to make the job pay

Weren’t Burn Brothers the ones with “Tyne-Tees-Wear and Clyde” across the front ? Might be wrong, could have been a company called Simpsons from round Hexham  Used to see both when on nights going over the A66 in the 80’s. :open_mouth:
What about Popeye of Scotland, what happened to him?

yes, I think they did - I’ll try to root out a pic of their 2-stroke Foden, as I’m sure it had something like that on it. It was an orangey-red colour.

yes they did - ran quite a few F86s, got a photo somewhere of a few loaded with Bruce anchors

Wheel Nut:
Brady.

Was that the Brady from Barrow-in-Furness?

Red/White/Blue, usually quite tidy. If it’s them, they used to be near Bowaters on the road into Barrow-in-Furness.

I haven’t seen them for a while, and TBH I’m not sure whether they’re still going.

Brady failed several years ago - I’ve a vague recollection that there was an issue with losing a major job to Stobart, but I can’t remember all the details now. I believe that Brady’s set up again, but I think that it didn’t last. I stand to be corrected on the details

Heres one for all you older chaps.

Walker Bros from Darlington

And another - R A H Transporters Darlington.
Also H & L Workington and North Lincs Haulage Scunthorpe formed C.L.S I think.Used to meet em on the old A18 with steel plate hanging over and a bit of a marker board  heading West early in a morning.Bad news in winter when sun was in yer eyes heading east especially where road narrowed under railway bridge near the Two Rivers Cafe :frowning: at Crowle.Thompsons took that plot over when cafe shut. CLS were running Big J’s then,a mucky blue colour. :open_mouth:

I worked for RAH quite a few years ago

hello its me again back for the weekend,
i didnt mean that i didnt know the firms, they were just a few from the old memory banks, like rankins, or athersmiths they used to run tidy seddons down barrow, they run out of barrow dairy when i was a trailer boy for johnston brothers of gilcrux aspatria,
hey wheelnut i see you are from melbourne, did you here about the 44 tonner who had to deliver a load of plastic pellets, for making windows, to the park estate, next to the fire station, well theres a few tight corners in melbourne, but i got round past the monument thingy turned right, left at the bottom and right again, got there no damage, but a fine for breaking the weight limit in the town,so it puzzled me why do people order 26 ton, when they know you cant get there ?, :frowning:

Aye, tis a bit of a squeeze down there Nad :stuck_out_tongue:

I tipped in Kendal yesterday and confused everyone when a Belgian tanker turned into the little street. I will try to put a picture up. It was tight but my concern was if there was a fire

well i was sure that i had got it wrong again, especially when mr plod said we only get rigids down here, so i asked a guy fixing lawnmowers,he sent me down by some allotments, i tipped right at the end by a garage and a caravan, suprised myself it only took 2 shunts to turn round, more room than it seemed, but i,ll pass on a return trip,
hey remember barnett and graham, they had a depot in buxton, main one in penrith, they,ve gone now, theres not much call for wagon drivers and haulage firms now, firms need truckers and logistics experts,? whats all that ?

RAH used to specialise in long extendable trailers I seem to remember.
Wasn’t CLS (Consolidated Land Services) formed to foil a long strike at North Lincs Haulage? Mucky blue and cream as I recall, Big Js, whereas N.Lincs had a lot of Invincibles.
I often used to load back out of Thompsons, loved it, no handball, wet ropes and sheets, just a couple of chains after a bit of a wait and off you go.
