Siddle Cook sold out yrs ago mid 60`s I think I think it ended up as some consortium named Tyne Tees or something like that a bit like BRS Then fired up again about 1969 as Elddis although doing a different type of traffic than he used to with the heavy Haulage.Things changing again just got a few flats & doing 60ft Airoplane bits.
Yungnud see you were a trailer lad for Johnsons Aspatria did you know Big Willie cant remember his second name but used to meet him from time to time around the country He went on for somebody elsle green & white moters pulling a milk tank?
hi greek, i didnt think any one still remembered johnstons,
well there was willie known as ginge, there was willie wombat he went to harry fearons they had a few tanks they became what is now john irving,
they were green with white roofs, they ran all sorts of makes but settled on f86s
in 70s then went on to dafs fiats mercs, before harry retired,
there was pattinsons tankers as well they were green just down the road at bothel, and o,niels at aspatria they were green and white also, but all had a different layout,
while ginge went to the the west ■■■■■■■■■■ by products, known locally as (best ■■■■■■■■ accent) t,chamical wuks, they had some rigid tankers and took over from harold wood at marchon then they got a erf and a good few atkis they were the first to have the uprated ■■■■■■■ 180, they had a 205 in with usual db gearbox eaton axle, they were a dark khaki type green then went a mad tangerine colour, when johnstons started up again ginge went back till they closed in the late 80s, boy do i fill my head with some drivel, but i luv it
Used to backload out of same places SE&SW & park same places and socialize in them days. Willie wombat could be the man I seem to remember something about shunting in the Board Mill for Robsons but that could be somebody else. Also remember a guy named Eddy worked for Watts used to see him around Bristol a lot Western Freights & anywhere else there was a nightclub. Running up the road last nght listening to two lads on the road joined in & one of them came back & says is that the Greek ?----somebody recognised the voice from over 25yrs ago Had a good auld natter
hi greek, just got back for the weekend again, i forgot to tell you about another will, billy warren he was mates with ginger,
but now i,ve read your note, the willie who was the shunter for robsons in thames board, was ginger, he was called nad, thats why i got young nad, cos he is my old man, gosh isnt it a small world, he used to take me all over, after the holidays at school the teacher would say were did you go for the summer children, as this was the 60s the replies would be blackpool, filey, ayrbristol london, but i went to more exotic places like, scunny hartlepool, redcar, grangemouth, sheffield, bradford,
and i had tea at stainmore and londonderry, who needed holiday camps,
the old man retired 2 year back, ended up at stobbys, he got to keep his tie his safety hat and got presented with a toy stobart wagon, wow what a payback,
i,m not a company i drive for the wage packet not the wagon,
bye for now greek, yung nad
h,mmm, a bit puzzled then, it could be willie warren, he was thick set guy with glasses, i worked at jazzers 74 till 76, the old man was there till they closed in 78 or 79, then he and jobby johnston went to thames board as shunters, jobby looked a bit like you do in the photo, each time a new firm got the contract they got transfered over, they went from robson to uci, onwards, williams, tdg, ended up at stobarts, huh dont we all, i wear green through protest not pride!,
whats the wagon a 88 or a 290, there wasnt a lot of them round here, ■■■■■■■■■ prefered scannys and mercs, something to do with mpg, thats why ■■■■■■■ came second to gardners round here also.
yungnad
Thats sounds like the lad I knew any idea what he`s doing now?
The wagons a F88 240 16Spd It was originally a ■■■■■■■■ moter SRM 202N
My gaffer bought it of a guy in Brampton only about 1yr old I think he was an owner driver struggling to pay for it Was still being used as a shunter up to about 6or 7 yrs ago inthe Melinate factory in Jarrow
hi greek, “warren” as he gets called works for john irving of mealsgate aspatria, they do a bit of container work to trafford park and is it deansgate just off the m8 the container terminal, i,ve been but i can remember the name, and jobby is a odd job man at stobarts he took that job when the old boy retired, cos he got the dreaded diabetes shortly after,
the old boy used to do a lot out of bristol used to back load off gwynne bowan and entress both swansea and starr roadways of bristol, i went on that run with him a few times he used to run down to wells with cheese from aspatria dairy, sometimes the backload was harveys for anywhere, but bowens used to give him alloy for workington, high duty alloys the in house transport was done by daltons they origionated from about luton and ran commers with 38ft or 40ft single axle trailers, what a waste of a memory.
bugger if i had studied somthing more constructive i could have been a bus driver instead,?h,mmm.■■, nope
[ hi wheelnut, it depends when you were at marchon,(all gone now), but if you were on flats try, athersmiths from barrow, j c lee of cockermouth, syd hind of keswick, don bewick of aspatria, bewicks of barrow, fearons mealsgate, lawsons cockermouth, h& l, johnstons, robsons, duncan hill, harry thompson,
for tankers, o,neils, pattinsons, by products, harold wood, staveley chemicals, tyburns, longsons,
tippers, lawson ,fearon, h&l , fyes, cawoods,
awww bugger there was some from preston, i cant remember the name, they had red 8 legger atkis then went onto maggies in later life,
and all the big boys used to come like suttons, brs, ici,
i used to enjoy listening to wagons pulling up to the brake top, theres actually more scanias get stuck on there than the old ones ever did, strange that.
see ya
Red/White/Blue, usually quite tidy. If it’s them, they used to be near Bowaters on the road into Barrow-in-Furness.
I haven’t seen them for a while, and TBH I’m not sure whether they’re still going.
Brady failed several years ago - I’ve a vague recollection that there was an issue with losing a major job to Stobart, but I can’t remember all the details now. I believe that Brady’s set up again, but I think that it didn’t last. I stand to be corrected on the details
Brady still has a very substantial warehousing business

Willie Wombat drove for Lawsons Haulage before go to H & M E Fearon.
Pattinsons Tankers were bought out by H & M E Fearon. Scania 111 made up the bulk of H & M E Fearon fleet they only had three Fiats, one mercedes 1626 & one DAF 2800 (Reg No MAO 820W)
