Which truck would you like to have a go in to compare it to the modern stuff, I like most of you have had a go in lots of trucks but some of them slipped my grasp I’m thinking merc 1748,ERF E14 that sort of thing before the speed limiters I loved the old MAN’s 65 all day long. I would just love a week with an old school unit is what i,m trying to say, which one would you choose.
Used to have a 1748 went well when it went, I also had a MAN17-502 Roadhaus now that was a Truck and half, used to do Greece, Italy and Spain the mountains wern’t much of a problem.
The Truck I drive today is a FH12 440 normal cab, goes well pulls well and is comfortable, not as good as the MAN overall.
As always I would still plump for a DAF Spacecab
F88-290 all day long… criuse at 65/70 without sweating. Could still keep up with the bling boys of today…
Would have been a KW if I’d have had the chance but the Bedford TM with a big Detroit in it was the next best thing.

My old Transcon 400 ■■■■■■■ 13 speed Fuller cant beat it.
Foden S39. Apparently the cabs would lift when travelling loaded!
My old man used to drive a 111 and I can honestly say when I was with him nobody got past it, well thats how I remember it! I always liked the look of the leyland marathon 2, never got in one so no idea if they were any good, it was a leyland after all!

The T45 with a TL 12 engine was much better than the Marathon.

Same as that. Got “demoted” to a 3600 space cab from a 95 350
Over the last 30 odd years I’ve had a few heaps, Mandators, Reivers, Sed-ackis etc. The nicest one I can remember was a … brand new Atkinson (I think) Borderer, the one with the tall narrow radiator.
Not a rattle or bump to be heard, the clutch brake worked, everything shiny clean. Only had it for a day but I still remember it. The nicest more modern one was a MAN with a column gear change round about 1980 ish. The present bunch are just tools to do a job, very little character.
I would happily drive a 20yr old 143 450 every day, not one that’s been covered in lights and tassles, something like that one that was refurbished to as new condition
Beyond that, a 290 F88 or a 141
leyland marathon, leyland roadtrain, merc 1729 except for the giant steering wheel, ah them were the days (rose tinted specs firmly on)

Jealous already 3300John, i’m going to take my binoculars with me next thurs, to try an spot you from a mile away. Then i’ll be on your side of the road trying to hitch a ride. Cause i’ll have no chance of catching you at 56
I would gladly have the 143 500 i used to drive back if fact my still uses it on landfill work in Wales
