Cab searches

Does anyone know how far security can go when doing a cab search?
Are there any protocols?
It’s a port specifically, but not customs I’m referring to.
I’m not asking how far anyone is prepared to accept before thumping any would be transgressive uniform wearing person.
Thanks.

Was once subject to an attempted cab search at a superdrug rdc in southampton many moons ago. As I was about to get back in my cab after tipping, got told (not asked) that my cab was going to be searched. I said nothing, but simply stood to one side with the door open. The uniformed fat fornicater then stepped on the bottom step, grabbed a handle with one hand and the steering wheel with the other, and which point I told him to stop and step away from my vehicle as I was refusing him permission to search my cab. He told me I wasnt allowed to refuse so I told him to summon his supervisor. 10 minutes later some other uniformed oik turned up wanting to know why I was refusing to be searched. Told him I wasnt refusing to have my vehicle searched, just wasnt having 24 stone of fat swinging off my vehicle controls, and as you dont know how to safely get in and out of a truck cab you arent safe to do so. This argued back and forth for a while before they gave up and sent me on my way unsearched. I genuinely had nothing to hide, I just took exception to the way it was carried out.

Rather than argue you should have just told him you wanted to record a near miss as this guy wasn’t trained to safely enter and exit your vehicle. They are legally required to do so once informed

Yes this is along the lines of what I’d have done and played them at their own spurious procedural game.

Health and safety is everyone’s responsibility you know… :unamused:

This was the late 80’s before elf n sayftee muppets infested every ■■■■ and cranny of our lives, and a near miss was just a driver on a night out wearing clothing he wouldn’t want the wife to see!

As toonsy says above, this is the way they want to play the game. It works both ways. Then you are not “arguing” but rather concerned for the guards wellbeing…

Went to Excel when the olympics was on, to deliver some stuff for the events and this ■■■■■■■■ with a springer spaniel sniffer dog wanted to put the dog in the cab to sniff for drugs or explosives he said, Well, I said your not putting a dog in my cab to walk all over my bedding with mucky paws and sniffer dogs are not trained for both drugs and explosives, only one or the other. he got the hump and fetched his boss, another chap of Asian descent with minimal English, and I told him he or the other could look in, but no dog is getting in, if you insist, I’m off with the load, they just let me in, I could have had anything.

Sapper

Only ever had one check which was off a lovely lady on security at a fertilizer plant after I loaded NH3. She just said to me that she needed to get so many checks in a day so i walked out with her and she just stood on my bottom step and looked over the seat and that was that. I have no issue with that but if someone wants to jump in my truck and start rummaging around in the back of my truck then that’s a different story and its my home all week and my personal belongings and what not are back there

And I would have thought that only the police were allowed to conduct a search, no matter what their site rules say.

I suppose if the security bod was an arse to you, then you could say to him/her, “You can seasrch my cab, as long as you bring a police officer in to do so, otherwise it’s a no go.”

Ken.

It’s all about attitude innit? Their attitude to me shapes my attitude to them.

Went to 02 arena/millennium dome once. Security came out with sniffer dog open back doors dog had a quick sniff round security fella walked round with mirror on a stick.
Didn’t bother to check my cab though he just opened doors stood on floor trying look up . Said that’s fine let me im. Could had anything in there.

I think the principal is that you accept the site rules as a condition of entry. Thats why in the incident I referred to I said I wasn’t refusing a search, just not having it done by someone unqualified.

As for the police, I think they have to have a reason to search. Had 2 of them pull me over on the pretext of them thinking I was ‘wandering a bit’, not enough to be dangerous but they wanted a breath sample from me. It turned up totally negative, so while one of them started to have a ‘chat’ with me about driving in a straight line, and I was replying about dropping 30 tons of vehicle into the worn out tramlines on the motorway the other announced he was just going to ‘check the cab out’. I didn’t like this, as although nothing to hide I value my privacy and this was my home 5 days out of 7, so I said that I did NOT give him permission to search my vehicle, but that if he went ahead anyway I was not going to obstruct him in any way whatsoever. This stopped him dead in his tracks and he didnt go near the truck again. I think they know exactly what the limits are, but will always push the boundaries to see what they can turn up.

I would like to know if they can insist on full access to the cab.
So, if I am hiding my small dog behind the curtains on the bunk, I have a chance that she won’t be found.
I think that if they are restricted to staying outside I have a chance.

They can’t insist on anything, only the police have the power to insist on searching a person or property…security bods are not in anyway party to these powers, regardless of what they may telll you.

They often do it there. Cab search or body search with the wand.

Cool story bro. Yellow or white chalk when you ran out of time on the loading bay?

I can never understand why they want to do a search on the way out and not on the way in!
Only time I had an row with a security bod was at the Dixons/Mastercare RDC at Newark, I went in without being searched but on the way out the guy started to climb into my cab without evening asking, I had to grab his leg to stop him and asked him if I could come and search his bedroom!! He said that I would not be allowed to leave the site until the cab had been searched but when I threatened to call the police he backed down. (I was never asked to go to that site again  :unamused: )

They can stand on the steps and do a visual check. They are not allowed into or to touch anything in the cab itself.

The only cab searches ive encounted are opening the door and quick look… they didn’t even climb up lol
