Cab searches

Martin:
I can never understand why they want to do a search on the way out and not on the way in!

Probably to make sure you haven’t knicked anything.

Only time I had an row with a security bod was at the Dixons/Mastercare RDC at Newark, I went in without being searched but on the way out the guy started to climb into my cab without evening asking, I had to grab his leg to stop him and asked him if I could come and search his bedroom!! He said that I would not be allowed to leave the site until the cab had been searched but when I threatened to call the police he backed down. (I was never asked to go to that site again  :unamused: )

Was once subject to an attempted cab search at a superdrug rdc in southampton many moons ago. As I was about to get back in my cab after tipping, got told (not asked) that my cab was going to be searched. I said nothing, but simply stood to one side with the door open. The uniformed fat fornicater then stepped on the bottom step, grabbed a handle with one hand and the steering wheel with the other, and which point I told him to stop and step away from my vehicle as I was refusing him permission to search my cab. He told me I wasnt allowed to refuse so I told him to summon his supervisor. 10 minutes later some other uniformed oik turned up wanting to know why I was refusing to be searched. Told him I wasnt refusing to have my vehicle searched, just wasnt having 24 stone of fat swinging off my vehicle controls, and as you dont know how to safely get in and out of a truck cab you arent safe to do so. This argued back and forth for a while before they gave up and sent me on my way unsearched. I genuinely had nothing to hide, I just took exception to the way it was carried out.

Cool story bro. Yellow or white chalk when you ran out of time on the loading bay?

No chalk, but the place was knee deep in spat out dummies by the time I got out of there. TBH I’d had run ins with the fat oik in the past. Typical power trip in a peaked cap that so many of us have encountered in the past. I wasn’t too concerned about his safety, but he looked like a heart attack looking for a place to happen, (was puffing away if he had to walk all the way to the back of my trailer to look in the back)and I didn’t want it to happen in my cab. God knows how much paperwork that would have meant for me. :frowning:

I had an interesting discussion about searches and private security with a security bod at the NEC recently.

I was carrying a small bag with paperwork as I went in. He asked “Can I have a look in your bag, Sir?”

I tried to hand it to him, but he said…“We are not allowed to touch it, by law, and I can be sacked if I touch it, so could you just open it for me please.”

So the law as it applies to private security would seem to be “You can look, but not touch!”

Don’t get me started on the NEC. Been there on and off over the years delivering event stuff.
Last time went last year deliving stuff for bbc good food show.
Went to the holding area place where you go got a pass etc.
Was told had pay £25 asked why never paid it before.
Some new rule have pay 25 but you get it back when you leave.
I refused to pay as didn’t have 25 on me. Has get the fitters to come over pay it for me.
Don’t see the point in paying £25 then getting it back when you leave

But I could be carrying a bomb on the way in! And how could they know if I had nicked anything if they did not know what was in my cab when I arrived. (I had a laptop, tv and satnav all bought from Currys lol)

When I used to work for a major supermarket another driver used to have to get his wife to sign his apples he took to work for a snack, because security used to have a nose in his bag and want to know where he got the apples…

ROADRANGER:
Does anyone know how far security can go when doing a cab search?
Are there any protocols?
It’s a port specifically, but not customs I’m referring to.
I’m not asking how far anyone is prepared to accept before thumping any would be transgressive uniform wearing person.
Thanks.

Portsmouth ROADRANGER ?
They often do it there. Cab search or body search with the wand.

I would like to know if they can insist on full access to the cab.
So, if I am hiding my small dog behind the curtains on the bunk, I have a chance that she won’t be found.
I think that if they are restricted to staying outside I have a chance.

They can’t insist on anything, only the police have the power to insist on searching a person or property…security bods are not in anyway party to these powers, regardless of what they may telll you.

And Customs

No immingham.

Years ago I had a proper haulage co, now I have just one.
So, we had an office and we took our dogs to work, but when I sold everything except one truck, I started taking my dog with me when the wife got a job 3 days a week.
She was able to take her dog with her, so I started to take mine.
This lasted 10 years until my old dog passed on.
I lasted a year without a dog, but I was depressed without a dog.
So I have a fantastic cockerpoo Yorkie cross.
I work out of immingham port and don’t deliver to steel mills act.
Lots of staff on the port see her and it’s not a problem, some of them have a little fuss with her (women)
Anyway a jobsworth saw her on Friday and it didn’t go well.
So, the wife has two dogs to take to work.
Thanks to Mr jobsworth.
That’s the reason for asking

Went to Excel when the olympics was on, to deliver some stuff for the events and this [zb] with a springer spaniel sniffer dog wanted to put the dog in the cab to sniff for drugs or explosives he said, Well, I said your not putting a dog in my cab to walk all over my bedding with mucky paws and sniffer dogs are not trained for both drugs and explosives, only one or the other. he got the hump and fetched his boss, another chap of Asian descent with minimal English, and I told him he or the other could look in, but no dog is getting in, if you insist, I’m off with the load, they just let me in, I could have had anything.

Sapper

Cool story - but your argument is somewhat flawed as a “sniffer” dog can readily be trained to seek out drugs and explosives (and firearms, bodies, cash etc) - as indeed the vast majority of Police detection dogs in this country are trained to do. As far as the dog is concerned they are just special smells that will get him a reward if he finds them.

I have my bag searched regularly, daily even…

[zb] knows what the wife thinks she’ll find stashed in there!!

And Customs
[/quote]
Many moons ago two customs arseoles wanted to search my car as I was leaving the Ipswich dock at about 0230, same two that had on numerous occasions sat on board drinking my duty free allowance. I refused , got out and locked the car and they called the police and we waited for them to arrive. In the end I just threw the keys in the dock and one of the police was a friend of mine so he gave me a lift to the nearest taxi rank and I went home, but had to wake the wife as house, shed etc was all on the bunch … I refused on principle !!

Only time my cab was ever searched was on exiting a certain foundry in North London that we regularly delivered limestone to and then it was only a ‘open passenger door and look in the footwell’ type of search looking for precious metals.

Pete.

I have probably had more searches than most .
Ports
Ferry ports
Mod sites
Airports
Eurostar terminus (Stratford ,Paris and Brussels)
Plus all the usual company factory sites .
Part and parcel of the type of jobs that we have done .
All those that have done a cab rummage have worn sterile gloves and overshoes .
Some sites have required pre booking and clearance with advanced photo ID and presentation of passports .
Having had advanced criminal checks and gov clearances in the past it all tends to be water off a ducks back , some of the factory sites are certainly very OTT by idiot wannabe security types in mock special ops uniforms .
The serious guys are all very fit and wear dark grey suits and are ultra polite and if you ain’t on the list you certainly ain’t getting in despite what some pointy shoe in a 3rd party transport office trys to tell you .
All the good places have spaced ram proof double gates .

The only cab searches ive encounted are opening the door and quick look… they didn’t even climb up lol

I would be surprised if a grown man laughed out loud as they looked inside a cab.
