Cab Search, Driver Search

mikeshe:
You are liable to a cab search when you enter any premises which you cannot really refuse if that is the Company policy. You can however refuse a search of your person unless a Police Office is present. A couple of places I used to go to, AWE at Aldermaston they used to look in the cab and have a quick look in your bags but never bothered about me. The other place was a precious metal smelting plant in Enfield where again they would have a quick look in the cab and we would be onced over by a scanner.

When I say a quick look in the cab, that’s exactly what it was. It wasn’t a proper search. At the end of the day if they’re sensible in their approach I don’t see a problem and again if you haven’t got anything you shouldn’t…not a problem. I have heard about the over zealous “Jobsworths” in Soton Docks but we come across idiots wherever we go, don’t let it stress you just laugh at them!

Also been to this place in Enfield (Johnson mattey) and they were all over the truck lockers etc shoes off and scanner also been to Sizewell which was similar and understandable. Fxto is intermittent but just stand on the top step can’t see the problem myself no big deal…!!

Channel tunnel security check.went in scanner man asked me are you loaded driver? What answer can you give when you got your orange ADR plates open and an ADR shuttle crossing number displayed in your window.

With the country on an almost high alert, with the threat to this country from terrorists, I would almost certainly welcome a search. These guys will stop at nothing to hurt, maim, etc, and also on the cyber networks, so we have to help our security services where we can, and not hinder them. Yes, it is a pain in the arse sometimes, especially when at a lot of places, we are in there day in, day out, and almost on first name terms, but they are doing a job that our main security, police, cannot attend every place.

You’ve been listening to the news and reading the papers too much.

Basically they have no rights to do anything. If they want to search your cab and you tell them where to go then all they have in ammunition is the ability to call do eff all. You can request that the police be called and you are happy for them to search your cab or person but the security turds have no legal rights whatsoever, it is merely assumed. They will of course threaten to ban you from site in the hope of getting you to comply.

I had Morrisons at Burton Latimer ask me to open my back doors for a search, as I’ve already told in another thread, I asked him to raise the barrier so that I could move my cab enough to open my door to get out, he raised the barrier and I just drove off. Amazing! no plod chasing me.

The best one was delivering to USAF Mildenhall. You get out of your cab and stand behind a yellow line painted on the floor while a couple of US guys in uniform go through everything with a fine toth comb. While you are behind the line you are “guarded” by another US serviceman, who has a very nasty looking automatic machine gun in both hands. I stood very still, said “yes sir, no sir” to any questions and tried not make any sudden movements!!

When I worked at Tuffnells, we weren’t allowed on to the base itself. Any drops had to be collected from the gatehouse, having first rung the customer to let them know we were there.

I used to deliver to all sorts of places a fair bit when i was doing generators, best one was east mids airport, no security search for me or the wagon , only thing that made me laugh was, when the maintance manager asked how quick the wagon went as i needed to be at the other end of the runway before the next plane came in , never seen my old scanny go so quick in its life

worst one used to be any of the airbases with yanks in charge, even though we held contractors passes issued by the yank airforce, everytime we used to get stopped on the way in while every single ■■■■ and cranny was checked,
the one day at lakenheath they wasnt going to let me on as i had a tank with 3000 litres of diesel in on the back, until i pointed out that without fuel the gennie wouldnt run on fresh air  that went down well , not made them even more slower than usual and for a job that would normally take an hour, it was 4 hours sat out the front waiting for permission to be let on, learnt me lesson that day keep me mouth shut till your on site :stuck_out_tongue:

i went in lakenheath without hassle.just an i.d check.
no vehicle checks or nowt.
iv`e been inside broadmoor, glen parva yoi, sellafield and quite a few military installations…all hassle free.
without doubt, the biggest ball ache i ever delivered to was the olympic village :smiling_imp:

Rhythm Thief:
Possibly Security Industry Authority? That’s what Google tells me anyway.

yes that what it stands for, i have that for doing the doors at some of entertainment venues

kr79:
Used to go in to olympics 3 or 4 times a day and had to go through the crap procedures.
Had the sniffer dog in one day and it ate the half eaten choclate bar id left on the dash.
Bloke went spare saying not to feed it etc.
Ended up in a big arguement as i said the dog stole it

PMSL Classic!!!

I got stopped once at Eurotunnel in UK (empty) for a trailer search, talking to security bloke walking down side of trailer, i told him i was empty, he looked in back, yep empty off you go, i said what are you looking for? He said illegal immigrants, i said surley you should be in France to do that, he said no, they come over here in trailers, claim asylum, get the handouts etc, then stow away out to France again, then come back to UK get caught, claim asylum and handouts again but using a different identity/ID.

Back earlier in the year when I was on punishment duties and driving a rigid for a few months…

The boss went mad and he reckoned I had done it on purpose!!!

 Hilarious! I’m guessing you didn’t get off the rigid for a while!

degsy4wheels:
Unless you have completed an airside driving course and have a valid airside driving permit, you will, as a contractor, be escorted when airside. Its classed as a secure area, and it’s not the airports that make those rules, it is the DfT.

I had no problem about being escorted airside at Heathrow, I wouldn’t have a clue where to go without the ■■■■■■!

They basically have to suspect your committing a crime to legally be able to photograph or search you on the spot.
Threatening to report them to SIA usually goes along with this bit of info very nicely. :imp:

They do to search you but they don’t to photograph you. Anyone can be photographed in a public place or if they’re on someone’s property and the property owner wants to

private person yes as a company no.

As a company yes. Also what human right do you think is being breached by them photographing you?

The right to privacy.

I often see discussions where someone confidently states that being photographed, searched etc is a “breach of their human rights”. What they (usually) fail to understand is that the rights to privacy etc under the Human Rights Act are only binding on the State (i.e. HM Government and their agents such as HMRC, Courts, Police etc), not on private individuals or companies.

1994 at Beck and Pollitzer, Daventry the security guy stopped a regular driver and asked to look in the back of his trailer ? The driver looked worried and said “Don’t you want to search my cab ?”
The guard said no he wanted to look in the back, they opened the doors to find two cases of 24 bottles of Fosters. The driver said “You got me, you normally just search the cab”
He was arrested :frowning:
At our Yonkers refinery the guards ask to search the cab, they just open the door and glance in, when I ask what they are looking for because if I was to steal anything it would be on the way out, not in.
“Looking for guns etc” came the reply.
“A good clue to know is that if I was carrying guns etc they would not be in plain sight, they would be hidden, so just looking in the door like that is not going to show anything unless I put a gun or other weapon on the floor in plain sight” … stupid guards.

I had a 3.9 metre refrigerated multi-deck chiller unit on. It was being installed into a canteen/restaurant area, which is where the shopfitters were waiting with specialist lifting equipment…I don’t think they fancied trying to either lift it down (800+ kilos) or drag it on a pallet truck across the base to the shopfitters!

A couple of years ago while doing drainage work we had to go to Durham high security jail. Got there at 8am. They let us in the compound before taking everything out the cab. Then they looked in the back of the van! We carried all the tools we might need to get manhole covers up, They took them all out and logged them, we got in at 11:20! Then once in we had to stop work, go out of the compound, and stay out of sight of any inmates they were moving around. We were in 2 full days accompanied by 2 wardens, a dog and it’s handler. You should have seen them when we found a mobile phone in the drain, they went ballistic. Oddly they never searched us.
