With the country on an almost high alert, with the threat to this country from terrorists, I would almost certainly welcome a search. These guys will stop at nothing to hurt, maim, etc, and also on the cyber networks, so we have to help our security services where we can, and not hinder them. Yes, it is a pain in the arse sometimes, especially when at a lot of places, we are in there day in, day out, and almost on first name terms, but they are doing a job that our main security, police, cannot attend every place.
There is a time and a place. Entering an airport: rightly so. Leaving a site empty? What? Going to poison the townies with fresh air?
Many years ago there was a security bod at the hub who would occasionally ask to look in the cab. He only ever had a quick glance and it was no bother, but I did ask him what he would do if he found anything suspicious since he was only looking on the way out and had no idea if anything he found had been there on the way in
He was not there long, and I must add that the guys on nights now are brilliant!
Asda RDC’s for example often ask me to open the trailer doors for them to have a look as I’m leaving site. Sometimes I’m empty, sometimes I have goods on for further delivery. Either way they never question it. I’ve asked what precisely they’re looking for but so far have received no satisfactory answer.
You can refuse a personal search by any person/security man etc and even a cop has to have reasonable grounds to do one. You can refuse a cab search if you own the vehicle, or on behalf of the owner (your boss) if he asks you to refuse one (even if you signed a notice saying you accept searches when you enter their property), BUT expect to be booted off site for non compliance or in the extreme, for the cops to be called, although whether they would attend is questionable. I wouldn’t refuse as I like the quiet life.

Thing is, if your employer says to refuse any request for the vehicle or your self to be searched, what would you do then?
When delivering lube and paint to the cruise liners in Southampton docks, always got searched, a pat down for me and a cab lookover, never bothered me to be honest, it only takes two or three minutes - funny thing is, they never look in the back of the truck??
It’s no different than catching a plane, look at the ■■■■■■■■ we all have to go thru for that
10-08:
They basically have to suspect your committing a crime to legally be able to photograph or search you on the spot.
Threatening to report them to SIA usually goes along with this bit of info very nicely.
They do to search you but they don’t to photograph you. Anyone can be photographed in a public place or if they’re on someone’s property and the property owner wants to
private person yes as a company no.
As a company yes. Also what human right do you think is being breached by them photographing you?

Would get you NOWHERE!! Worked as a HGV driver for HMPS for 25 years and was subjected to it every working day - and I was classified as HQ staff!
I was delivering to the Excel for the Olympics last year and I was subjected to a search upon entry, I did not mind the guy looking in the cab window, but when the dog was brought over and the guy was going to lift it into the cab, I told him “no ■■■■■■■ chance mate, this is my home and no dog with dirty paws is coming in here, it’s raining ffs”, he eventually backed down.

Steve
I was referring to someone not employed by the company whose premises they were on.
They probably have more right to search you than they do the prisoners Lol

You can refuse a personal search, but not a cab search as far as I know.
But, yes, in my opinion you’d end up banned from the terminal and possibly out of a job.
I had a barny with an Asian security guard (not being racist) at the Olympic Village when it was being built because he wanted to take my swiss army knife off me as it was banned from site, I told him to do 1, I was a tramper at the time, I permitted him to stand on the steps and look into the cab but not to climb in, he spotted the swiss army knife as I’d just opened a can of fruit in juice with it and he grabbed it stating “these are banned from site, no knives on site” and other such crap. I took it off him and told him he can either refuse the full load or [zb] off
I was tipped but banned from site for future. It never got tested as it was a 1 off delivery.
Heathrow was a right ballache when we was delivering to Terminal 5 when it was being built. You had to go to some sort of holding/inspection area at the side of the M25 where you had to drive the unit and trailer through an x ray machine and the cab and trailer was fully searched.
Because we was going “airside” the whole cab was stripped of everything ,liquids i.e milk, water, pop, gas, knifes, forks, food, cooker, microwave, batterys, tv remotes, dvd player, laptop (they couldn’t take my tv as it was fitted above the passenger door ) and stored for you in a locker (that didn’t lock) until you got back. You was then escorted to Heathrow and airside where you was driving through terminals, taxiing areas and the runways all the way to terminal 5.
So a normal tip which may usually take upto an hour actually tookabout 4-5 hour Then you was escorted all the way back to the holding area where you retrived all of your personal stuff hopeing that nothing had gone walkies while you were away. An absolute joke in my eyes
I’ve been airside at Heathrow, had to drive into the BA hangar because I was picking up a raft of seats that were going for some sort of safety test. Security was thorough, but I never had my cab searched!

I’ve been in several Sainsbury RDC’s where on exit you have to press a button and wait for either a red or green light - red means they search, green means they don’t. Never had a red though so I don’t know how hard they look. Also spent a week at a B&Q site where everyone leaving the building had to pick a ball from a bag containing 9 white balls and 1 black. Get the black, and it’s a full bag and body search, including latex gloves.
Why the ■■■■ were they wearing gloves? I’ve been patted down in nightclubs but the bouncer didn’t wear gloves. Did you have to get undressed It sounds like a box ticking exercise. The fact they are only having a cursory glance in cab’s sounds like going through the motions. A bit like checking old granny’s handbags in airports. Why bother?
The rigmarole when flying; shoes and belt off, and I’m sure on those full body scanners the security bod can see bits and pieces , that’s a step way too far IMHO. I’l take the pat down thanks.
The best one was delivering to USAF Mildenhall. You get out of your cab and stand behind a yellow line painted on the floor while a couple of US guys in uniform go through everything with a fine toth comb. While you are behind the line you are “guarded” by another US serviceman, who has a very nasty looking automatic machine gun in both hands. I stood very still, said “yes sir, no sir” to any questions and tried not make any sudden movements!!
try the airports, had deodorant, shower gel and toothpaste confiscated today at Gatwick, along with a bottle of water. not allowed to take liquids airside. I didn’t want to point out if they stuck to the rules to the letter they wouldnt be getting de icer for the planes

Unless you have completed an airside driving course and have a valid airside driving permit, you will, as a contractor, be escorted when airside. Its classed as a secure area, and it’s not the airports that make those rules, it is the DfT.
I have had my cab searched a few times at Nuclear sites like Springfield and Capenhurst and its no big deal and it is understandable why they search. The induction on your first visit is a pain but again understandable.
I have had mobile phones sealed/locked in a bag until you leave site and that’s the most I have suffered, its no big deal, we have clients on site hiring our FLT’s keeping me in a job. Of course I will do the security protocol to get the customer delivery, if I didn’t and kicked up a fuss each time would I be putting across a good image of the company I work for? would I still have a job when the complaints start rolling in?
Your likely hourly paid, smile and crack on
When I was working the boat out of Southampton we used to get interrogated about where we were going etc. when we drove in or walked in through gate 4 but if you got on the bus that went to the Oceanography centre no one said a thing!
Back earlier in the year when I was on punishment duties and driving a rigid for a few months, I had the joys of delivering to a HMP Coldingley over at Send. Great fun and games. ANYTHING that could be construed as helpful to an escapee was taken … maps, sat navs, pens, phones, knifes, ■■■■ and even my bottle of Mr Muscle window cleaner. Full cab inspection before being allowed out of the holding pen.
Second time I went there turned into one of those ‘oh dear’ days LOLOL
Drove through first gate into the pen. Went through procedures and cleared to enter prison so the out gate of the pen was opened. As I drove through into the prison, one of the guards was a bit keen and lowered the gate too quick thus it caught on my roof and I pulled it out of it’s runners. Once it had been established it wasn’t my fault, I was allowed to proceed. The way it works is an absolute ball ache. Your ■■■■■■ opens the gate, you drive through and he locks it behind you. Then he walks down to the next gate and repeats. I had to go through SEVEN gates to get to where the delivery was wanted. A prisoner was waiting for me on a fork lift and the drop was made. As I was doing the curtains up, an alarm went off!!! ■■■■■■ calls out ‘lock down’. I looked at him wondering what he was on about.
It seemed the powers that be had decided that as the gate was too badly damaged to be closed, a lock down situation was required where all the prisoners had to remain in their locations until further notice and no movements were allowed around the prison. Now whilst I didn’t object to the bad boys being locked up, I suddenly found this applied to me as well. I was locked into the Goods In area until further notice!!! Luckily, a prison guard allowed me to use an office phone to phone our office and explain what had happened and I did get a cup of tea out of them. I scrounged a ■■■ from a prisoner and proceeded to sit there for three hours!! As it was now six o’clock I took the remaining six deliveries back to the yard laughing all over my face. The boss went mad and he reckoned I had done it on purpose!!!
I’ve delivered to prisons in an artic. They don’t fit in that little pen funny how the double standards appear. Once, after I put my stuff in the locker they did a cab search and missed the knife that had fell in the passenger foot well.
