A470 Brecon Beacons .

I have crawled up that stretch more than a few times in an under powered and overloaded Bedford TK in the late 1960’s, later went up there faster in more powerful lorries. Great pic cc. I have an original painting of a Roberts of Ffestiniog M A N by Alan Spillett.
Cheers Dave.

Hello dave , that painting of the MAN is it a heavy haulage unit , or what they use on the powdered slate as in this lovely picture on the beacons ? i had heard many a story of drivers being stranded on them back in the 60s winters . thank you Trevor .

No Trevor, the picture I have is a modern M A N which Aan took a photo of when Roberts of Ffestiniog was hauling boulders down to Aberaeron for the sea defence about three years ago. He then painted a picture of it which I bought off him.
Cheers Dave

Hello Trevor
I assume you are referring to this , but it was taken on the A417 Bird lip hill on its way to Austin Rover at Swindon . I am afraid to say i have nothing in the way of Merlin , largely i found that fleet to be rather non descript . cc .

That’s a route I travelled with a lorry many times cc. In my day the road went from the Air Balloon then through Birdlip village and through to Nettledon. I still travel the A417 that way a few time a year.A big difference now with all the bypasses etc.
Cheers Dave.

Sorry to be pedantic, lads, but isn’t that CRICKLEY Hill? Birdlip Hill hasn’t been used by lorries for years and was accessed by doing a right turn at the bottom of Crickley Hill at the Twelve Bells pub. It was quite a climb- I can remember going up it in an S-type Bedford fully (!!!) loaded and making it over the top with just half a gear left. You certainly wouldn’t have tried it in the Winter with a covering of ice on the tarmac.

Evening chepstowchap.
I have only recently come across this site and am very pleased to have found it as you have a lot on here which I too have followed over the years eg John Evans, Tree Harvesting and stuff around the Brecon area. I was prompted to write by this picture and the mention of Merlin Transport as I have recently added a load of their lorries ( inc G367RLG) onto my Flickr site www.flickr.com/photos/16212470@N03 which you and others may find of interest.

Chris Richards

That trailer looks a heavy one never seen that in port talbot merlins we’re put together with all the steel employees pension money then when they finished they had to sell everything to put the money back in the bank so people retiring got there pension back british steel was a big contributor to rovers blue line joints Raymond’s used to load secon London to swindon

Hi ROF, you are not being pedantic at all,you are absolutely correct. I remember it well as I used to ascend it as a small boy with any one of a number of Ted Warner’s chaps on route from the “old” Gloucester Market with pigs for Coggans of Chichester on a Monday.I live in Shurdington so I still use it occasionally depending on the time of day as it can be a bit of a nightmare getting across the A417 at the top.Of course as you will know the other route from Cheltenham to Birdlip was up Leckhampton Hill ,another nasty little climb up the Cotswold escarpment.Hope you and yours are well, must dash because I am only on day release from the “Home for the perpetually bewildered” p.s Maurice Williams sends his regards-MIND!!

I shall be in God’s Own County again at the end of July. I’ve been dragged in to baby-sit Sprog’s two dogs while her family jets off to some exotic Greek island for a fortnight’s revelry and sunbathing. Old ■■■■■ are still useful at times- they only want you when they want something!
