sssh dont tell every one billy   keith yes i wont fault but if looking for a truck to start up with to many have been hammered in to the ground ive seen this first hand and you never buy a v8 and usually they are on hard work in hilly terrain the 144 is a good lump yes but ask your self this could you put your hand on your heart and say if you were buying a start up truck you would buy a v8 not knowing whether you going to do bulk, containers or general personally also theres the lez problem the 11 or 12 litre red dots are a much better option both in terms of longevity and fuel economy plus you get a 3-4 year out of a 53 54 plate 6 pot than a v8 and you dont have the weight problem. as repton said ive had trucks from an f reg 450 to a new 4 series 470 for 6 years and a couple of years in new v8 and 6 pot 480 reseries. to me its no brainer for a start up personally id be looking at something like a premium or try to find a good stralis 500 which could most likley be had for the money of 144 but these trucks will be much newer and will need much less tlc

keith sounds like you had it from new but not everyone is mechanicly minded

Alix most of what you have put here is boooollocks… You would buy a 3-5 year throw away motor… as keith says look at whats still running
I bought the first v8 as a start up truck and wish i still had it as well and not sold it… all the v8"s i have had so far have been spot on yep me and cpt chubbs always do the bottom ends as keith seems to do as well,
A Kin stralis have you been on those funny woodbines if the lad was going to start up?? you of all people would recomed a stralis as a start up motor whats wrong dont you want him to sucseed or something…
V8 are made to be punsihed and they still keep coming back for more, if the drivers would respect them i would have a v8s…
what does it matter what you are doing bulk containers etc?? apart from weight… v8"s are the only way built to be punsihed in the right manner!!!

dont worry alix when you decide to sell that truck you will get a cracking price merc are by far the top truck in the uk indeed the world for export over the last 5 to 6 years i must have brought 50 of em all lhd some from france spain and belgium the problem is they are a victim of the own success we have moved to old scania and volvo now why lay 15k out to get 20k when you can buy a version 1 fh for 8 to 10k and make the same profit the only thing is the others sit a while before they sell the actros mp1 are gone soon as you get there (the middle east that is)all the old uk 6x2 actroses are running in jordan just converted to lhd its weird to see an old tony bulmers blue actros coming at you i think we have all drifted away from the question the lad was asking a lot of the faults that have been mentioned on hear are common to all 4 series not just 144s most people who run v8s treat them as there pride and joy mostly o/ds now there are some good buys out there just choose carefully ps i had a magnum 480 mack the injector locked open causing it to hydraulic this did the big end and crank the crank was 7k from renault and rod was £880 the v8 scania is exactly half that from scania so renaults aint a cheap option really

Has anybody any thoughts on a 2006 Renault magnum 480 dxi6x2
What they like
Engine
Common faults etc
Thanks

Well Daz I like that bit " ME and cpt chubbs always do the bottom ends " . It is wise to do the bottom end and what I can’t understand is aren’t all motors thrashed regardless of what make they are, the truth is the Scania V8 can take it . 40 years later they can’t have been as crap as a lot like to think they are. :unamused: :unamused: :

Davyboy:
jeeesus!,comma’s,full stops,capitals,please? :unamused:

And the odd extra apostrophe always goes down well . Don’t see any capitals in yours, either! :grimacing:

Watch the early 164 engines. I have seen several blow up over the last couple of years. The timing gears,at the rear of the engine wear…to the point where they fail…but unfortunately they drive the oil pump…which seems to be the first item to fail…with catastrophic results. A telltale sign before this occurs,is a bad oil leak at the rear of the engine. This normally occurs between 1.2 ~1.5 million kms.

a 164 is a totally different beast to a 144 the ds 14 lump is vary basic unlike the 164 twin camshafts unit injectors cracking exaust manifolds not a popular truck look at the resale values.scania kinda lost the way with the 164 having to fit oil cooling radiators to the side of the chassis as an after thought (only on the 580 that is )none of that nonsence on the 14 litre 2 valves per head in line bosch injector pump normal bosch injectors very little electrics built to last iv just been to kiev in the ukraine in the last 10 days pulling a step frame heated box (full of art) i was only about 21ton gross out and back empty tare was 19ton it averaged 9mpg i was very happy with that and more than a match for todays modern trucks iv just brought a 124 470 and im really putting my head in the lions mouth i know nothing about the engines as yet and if i didnt live near london i wouldnt be doing it for me the 144s are rock solid

The secondary turbo is liable to blow if the oil spinner isn’t cleaned every service other than that there pretty solid fuel isn’t brilliant (had one from new for 6 years)

who would do a service and not clean the spinner or change the filter ? the one i have just brought is an ex charles russell late o6 plate lhd it has been maintained regardless of cost the mans fleet are prestine i took a lot of advice before buying a 470 every one told me the same 124 470 in a 4 series were agg the turbo compound unit has been modified in the r series and give very little problems i have spoken to one man who took it of put a cover over the timing gear hole modified the exaust in an 8 wheel tipper and it runs fine iv never spoken to any one with an r series who had a problem and 1 guy had done 1.1 millon km and the trip computer in mine is showing 9.8 mpg over the last 32000km my mate owns fearnwood commercials and has sold loads of em never a prob a lot of it is just driver talk (ihope lol) it wont work very hard with me mainly art movements and film set in the summer then i go back on astrans and take me sellers down to the middle east kind of a juggling act between the 2 its done 770000 and i will do about 150000 inthe next 2 year then down to bahrain and sell it for what i paid 2 year before cheap motoring and dont say good if it works iv done it with me last 4 units even had a profit on some lol

Keith believe it or not scania didn’t clean said part as they did the serviceing mine didn’t give me and problems apart from a couple of intercooler pipes and the retarder playing up scania thought it was the secondary turbo and replaced it as a precaution other than that it was good motor

just got rid of a 97 144 460, 1.3 million on the clock, had one clutch, turbo, water pump, halfshatf-farm work, had the usual cab bushes and joints, steering joints. sold for 7 grand
just replaced it with fh 12 55 reg 280000 on the clock £14750 . better on fuel and more comfortable  cant beleave i have just said that

The bloke asked for advice about buying a Scania 144, yet from that simple short post the other posters have worked out that he needs it to weigh half a tonne less and suggesting Spaghetti Mixers as an alternative.

You forgot to add in the weight of the low loader trailer underneath its wheels :stuck_out_tongue:

I love V8 Scania engines. I just don’t like the lorry as much. :exclamation:

make you 100% right wheel nut man asks for a bit of advice on a truck next thing he is a new start o/d going on bulk tippers and i know were your coming from with the volvo i have allways had both my local volvo dealer at enfield runs rings round any one else in our area the iveco dealer is now renault (norfolk trucks) and they aint got a scooby the parts man in daf at waltham cross told me earlier this year when i brought an 05 xf daf that he had worked for daf for 20 year and had never heard of the head gasket problem so i sold that i dont tolerate fools gladly and he was one and im just trying to repair a fractured relationship with scania after i took the parts man by the throat for trying to make me look a fool iv got an r series now but i got to say me 144 530 is a better drive softer and obviously more beans i was in volvo the other day getting cab mountings for an old fh im taking to the middle east and i was thinking why did i change every body hear knows the product from the parts men to the fitters i really dont know

A score says its gone before christmas, you buy a new lorry each & every week, I know you’ve painted it but like I say it won’t be with you 2 years
