The decision to end the service of both and no like for like catapult equipped replacements having been taken by the Wilson and Heath administrations.
Argentina ordered the Super Etandard in 1979 not long after Thatcher took office and after the scrapping of Ark Royal.
Thatcher only went to war after the fact of the Falklands invasion.In the knowledge that the land based Etandard could effectively take out the task force.
The question isn’t how many Harriers were shot down by Etandards it’s how many ships were and could potentially have been, sunk by Etandards and how many Etandards were ( not ) shot down by Harriers let alone shot down before getting into firing range of the Exocet missile.
You do know the Etandard was a ship buster not an air superiority interceptor/fighter ?.The type of asset that the seaborne Phantom was ( would have been ) there to destroy.

The failure to listen to the few warnings, made by whoever, regarding the black hole left in the Fleet Air Arm’s capabilities, by the decision to remove catapult equipped carriers from its inventory, obviously had nothing to do with Thatcher’s administration at the time of that decision.
She just took political advantage of it after the fact of Argentina having obviously, based it’s operation to take the Falklands, on ‘that’ insane decision.
A decision which continues to this day to the justified consternation and equally justified accusations of cost cutting by the land of the free and the Nimitz class carrier.Ironically thereby vindicating and proving Trump right over the graves of the Argentine Exocet’s and Etandard’ Falklands victims and resulting weak link in NATO naval power.
That’s how it’s actually totally relevant to the topic.

The Ark Royal was available in 1977. It didn’t stop the Argentinians from attempting a landing so they were hardly scared of her. We didn’t need to use her as the threat from the nuclear sub was enough to scare the Argentinians off. A similar response in 1982 would have prevented war but the government chose to stand by and see what developed. We won the war without her so I don’t know why you’re rambling on about it.
You don’t care about someone’s private thoughts but you make a point about them - weird. Your snide comment about the effectiveness of our military strategists is not worthy of comment. I assume that you have never served in any of the forces.
You agree that Thatcher used the conflict for political gain. You think that the decision to fight was taken after the invasion of the main islands. I disagree, so let’s leave it at that.

Great to put it into football terms.We won the Falklands war by two penalties after giving away two own goals and selling our two best strikers.
Good luck with shooting down an Etandard with a Harrier before the Etandard can launch an Exocet as opposed to a Phantom, which is what I clearly meant.
Even with the help of American sidewinders which at least gave the Sea Harrier half a chance of shooting down a few knackered old Skyhawks.
I get it we scrapped our two proper aircraft carriers and their Phantom capability because they were just too American even though we invented the aircraft carrier.
